Petrol Price Savings Tactics

Hey guys long time reader first time poster.

I thought I would share my system that I have created to save on fuel. It involves the following:

1) Using the entertainment book to get 5% off gift vouchers
2) Using 3 x 20L jerry cans
3) Using Woolworths everyday rewards card 4 cents discount
4) Taking advantage of the spend $5 in store to get 4 cents off a litre deal
5) Using Woolworths fuel app on IOS to find cheapest petrol

I purchased 120 litres of fuel today (60 in my car and 60 in the jerry cans) at $1.09.

Here are the calculations:

Starting price (assuming no discount) - $130.80 for fuel and $5.40 for 2 loafs of bread (bread was needed and same price as Woolworths supermarket) = $136.20

minus $4.80 for using everyday rewards card - $131.40
minus $4.80 for spending $5 in store - $126.60
minus 5% off for using gift card - $120.27

Total saving = $15.93

On top of this, my local station was 1.43 per litre - saving = $40.80. I used the Woolworths fuel app on IOS which is excellent and managed to get one station on the way home from work that was at the bottom of the price cycle.

The total saving was as high as $56.73. It could be improved further by buying more jerry cans to get up to the 150 litre limit.

So as you can see the system saves plenty of money in comparison to your average customer who just fills up blindly at the most convenient petrol station which can be at inflated prices.

Please feel free to share any other tips you have. Cheers everyone!

Yeah I just have a Honda CBR125R.. It uses about 10L of fuel every 400kms..

And in Melbourne I have free parking wherever I want..

Thats my secret for saving money on fuel and its fun as hell..

But your method still isnt bad never the less haha

    • Why do you have free parking?

      • In Melbourne, motorbikes can park on the footpath.

Oh yes. Just got myself a yamaha R15 :P gonna do the same thing !

    • Yeh but you risk gettin takin out by idiot drivers. Thats the downside.

  • Thanks dude. I forgot to mention that I had the $50 COLLECT50 eBay voucher and I didn't know what to spend it on. I managed to find the jerry cans, which are metal, for 47% off ($19.95 each) at a store close to where I work. Autobahn and Supercheap want $50-80 for exactly the same thing.

Sorry to break it to you but you got a cheap Chinese jerry can there. Same as the rubbish Aldi sold. Give it a month or so and it will be so rusted up, you will struggle to open it. The European ones in Supercheap are $48 at the moment, so that's a bargain. For $20 though, it was a good deal, but they won't last.

  • I have a dual fuel car, so fill up LPG and unleaded for usually around 90l. I buy a 2l and 3l milk in store to hit the $5 spend at Woolies, and use the EDR 4c as well.
I don't mess around with jerry cans although I have a couple, the hassle of fuel handling isn't worth it as I have plenty of 4c/l discount coupons and drink plenty of milk. I'm not really clear why you use the jerry cans unless you don't have enough coupons for every time you refuel.

  • Super big warning, storing lots of petrol in your home will void your home insurance policy.

The price cycle can fluctuate by 20 cents/L or more. If it's at the top do NOT fill up, just buy $10 or so.

And if it's cheap stop and fill up even if you have half a tank left.

Use the Internet to check what is a fair price and to see if prices have been going up or down…

Ensure that you keep tyres inflated to the correct pressure.

Avoid using ethanol ,you probably won't get as many k's, ultimately it is less economical.

Also do not carry useless junk in your car.

  • Thanks for the comments guys.

The reason I use the jerry cans is to both take advantage of a cheap price, and to enable more litres to purchased thus making the $5 spend in store more beneficial.

Bummer to hear the cans are cheapies. None of the pourers in super cheap or autobarn fit the opening - so yes that's probably an indication they are a Chinese rip off.

    Petrol Price Savings Tactics

    don't drive?

  • This is a great topic, I am on sydney roads 8 hours a day, going through 2-3 tanks a week, and I regularly see within a half an hour period 25-30c differences per litre at different stations

  • Live 30 seconds away from work and have a minimal social life. I get fuel monthly.

  • Fuel goes stale over time and can build up contaminants that dont burn. Are you gonna risk your engines health for the sake of 15 dollars?

  • I do a significant amount of km for work and my wife drives a petrol SUV, so the fuel wouldn't be stored for any longer than a week at most.
