[PC] Black Mesa for Free - Chip.de (Price for Early Access on Steam Is $19.99 US)

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Note: This has been posted before when it was not considered a bargain and moved to the forum as it did not normally cost anything and hence was not an "awesome price reduction". Now it is on Steam and the price for Early access on Steam is $19.99 US).
See:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/362890/

I therefore do consider this a bargain now (although of course the game on Steam will eventually look a tad bit different to the free version I assume)

  • Also I believe they aren't going to be updating this version with Xen

  • Maybe not. But as it is not finished yet I think it is great to be getting it free as is because until out of early access the differences are not that great.

And please edit post with your links. To give everybody a choice.

It's still the same mod, I feel clickbaited

    • +1

Yes, but now it's 19.99 on Steam. So getting it free is still a deal.
252 people upvoted the C&C Red Alert 2 deal even though it is always free in a DRM free version!

      • C&C Red Alert 2 is always free?!
        Since when?

    • +1

The Steam Early Access version is not the same mod:

"The Early Access version includes new visuals, new voice over, updated encounters and stability changes, and also adds multiplayer. The final release will feature more maps and modes than are currently included, but the presence of a Steam Workshop page for Black Mesa should ensure some additional arenas to tide fans over."

      • I assume this isn't the Early Access version however?

        • -3

Probably not completely identical. But after playing it you will know whether the updated version (which will or will not be very different) is worth your $20.
At this stage they are not too different I think - other than multiplayer.

The statement reflects the developer's aim with the finished version. But since its early access I would always try out the free version first and then see if it's worth it. And if you think it is, then spend your cash.

OP has clearly not put any research into this.

This is the old mod that has not been updated and won't be.

The game on Steam has been updated and will have the rest of the game in the future.

There are plenty of improvements in the Steam version that makes this not a bargain.

    • -7

So tell me - do you know for certain that this game will ever come out of early access?
Do you know what it will look like when it does?

And how is this a bargain:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211453

when it has been completely free for a long time and doesn't even have DRM?

      http://www.old-games.com/download/6520/command-conquer-red-a…

      • I could be wrong, but old-games.com doesn't exactly come across as being legal. There's games there like Doom 3, Quake 4, Warcraft 3 etc which I don't believe have been offered for free by the developers, and even if they had old-games.com probably has no redistribution rights. There seems to be a distinct lack of information on that site as to how it operates and how it comes to have permission to distribute the titles it does.

      • Even if it doesn't come out of early access, the money you pay is for the improvements already in the Steam version.

        • Have you checked? I did not see that much different there that would make it a "new" game.

        • @Lysander:

I never said that. It just has plenty of improvements that make it worth it before you get the rest of the game.

        • @samfisher5986:

As of now the majority of improvements stated on Steam are simply not there yet - at least I cannot see much when starting and comparing the two games.
Hence it is really almost the same game in my opinion.

        • @Lysander:

You must not be comparing very well then.

      • As Smigit has already said, the legality of that website is a bit confusing. There's no way that Warcraft 3 or Diablo 1 or 2 are free… They're still being sold on Blizzard's website.

        • That's not an argument. Theme Hospital is being sold on many websites but it has been free several times, too. Linux is always free too but companies like Red Hat charge for the convenience of not having to find everything and bundling it yourself. Therefore I would not rely on that argument.
Unless you can prove the site is illegal I would not make such statements.
We do not know what kind of agreements the website has. Keep in mind it is hosted with a .com address. Easy as pie for any publisher to take them down in 1 day and shut them for good if it was illegal.

Anyway, as has been confirmed above C&C 2 has been free officially, so kaneissik post belongs in the forum, regardless of the legality of any website.

        • @Lysander:

Uh, it is an argument… It's a website with pirated software. But obviously you're salty because you posted a mod that is barely deemed a 'deal'.

And no, the website doesn't have any agreements. Please.

        • @kaneissik:

EA has made C&C 2 free.

And again, unless you know it is a website that is illegal I wouldn't be making statements like this in a public forum.
I am sure EA is not that incompetent as not to be able to shut down such a website if it was illegal. Their legal department is not small.

Origin also sells C&C1 etc. , in the very least as part of a compilation, even although that is available free too. Therefore, the fact that Origin still sells it is NO argument for saying other websites offering it for free when EA "released" it six years ago are illegal.

Gosh, you are quick making assumptions about things.

Do you know (as in being able to prove it) that (a) the website is illegal and (b) that there are no agreements in place and if so what those agreements are?

By the way, some companies consider Ozbargain engaging in activities that are illegal such as using their trademarked logos, pictures, exploiting promotions (publishing individual e-mail vouchers etc.) - see McDonalds. So, does that mean that Ozbargain is an illegal website? I do not think so as if it was the companies would take Ozbargain down in the same way that EA would take down the great number of websites offering C&C 2 for free. Those websites don't hide so they are easy to find.

It sounds as if you are a bit 'salty'. As soon as I mentioned your deal is not a deal you jump on the train that the website is illegal. Funny you did not mention it when another user posted the link to the website before me. Probably because he did not raise doubts about whether your deal is a deal, hey?

Therefore, the matter is concluded for me. Unless you can bring proof the website is illegal, it is simply just an assumption by someone who is a bit "bitter", so really there is no use in continuing this conversation with you.
Having a discussion on this basis is not going anywhere and my time is to precious for that. Sorry.
          Have a great day anyway.

        • @Lysander: Using a single coupon code multiple times isn't illegal. It may be against their policy at which according to their discretion they can reject the multiple uses of the code, however that simply means it is against policy. I don't think the police will be arresting anyone for using a free shipping code.

        • @tensionday:

Well, it is a breach similar to breaches of software licences. So, yes it might not necessarily be a criminal matter but definitely it is a civil wrong for which liability could attach.

Why do you think Ozbargain complies with McDonald's request not to use their links and trademarks? Maybe because they do not want to get into legal trouble?

So, you are saying that if companies do not take enforcement action, then it is OK. So why the upset about a website which has not even been proven to be illegal? If they companies do not take enforcement action it must be OK, right?

All I am saying is: it is NOT okay to declare something illegal unless you have proof, especially if many other sources offer the same product OPENLY for free which is a strong indication it is not illegal as otherwise enforcement action WOULD have been taken.

        • Yes.

        • @Lysander:

Proof? Why don't YOU show proof, you're the one telling everyone that the website is legal, yet they have the games I've listed, which are not free.

        • +1

I think this is a better comparison.

          Dayz: Free
          Dayz: US$34.99

        • @rompastompa:

Given that the free one is not in an alpha state and works stable while the paid version warns of many issues as it is early access, which one do you think is the bargain at this stage of development? I know which one I consider the bargain until the paid version is successfully completed and bug free and has all the features that were promised and aimed for.

The comparison is not quite right though as in Black Mesa's case both are playable stand-alone games while your example has one DLC add-on requiring the base game and one stand-alone game so in your example there is a lot more difference.

This free mod is not the same as Steam version.

Mod is always free. Free software belongs in the forums.

    No bargain.

    • -3

      See above.

Red Alert 2 is always free yet it is not in the forums. Please explain.

      • Red Alert hasn't always been free. This (mod version) has always been free.

        • -1

Since 2008 and thereafter. So way before this Origin deal.
It is free on a great number of websites now so there is NO deal getting it from Origin.
Origin charges even for C&C1 (at least as part of a compilation) even though that has been made free, too by EA.
          Go figure.

But apparently, a lot of people are just "fans" of DRM systems like Origin and Steam. Fine with me. I prefer DRM free if possible.

          @Lysander:
Doesn't matter. Read the rules before posting. For free software to be valid it must have been chargeable at some point, regardless of age.

        • -1

          @PainToad:

It is chargeable now, isn't it?

        • -1

          @Lysander: No.

        • -1

          @Lysander:
          Again. Read the rules.

      • -2

You're linking something from 2008 which was obviously a timed promotion, there's no page on their website now with the option to freely download it.

Please get an argument instead of spreading misinformation

  • wow this video looks awesome, how can i play this? it's an addon for what??
