Vivitar HD Camcorder - RED or BLACK - $5 @ MSY

900

Stumbled across this deal for a Vivitar DVR1020HD-LIC HD camcorder for $5 on the MSY promotions page.

Available in both black and red.

Appears to be stock in most stores however no indication of how much stock is on hand.

I can't imagine that this will give your Go-Pro or Sony camcorder a run for its money but for $5 it's worth trying out.

  • Shows Out of stock

    • Thought so too but it's not. That was the WA Online. Shop with another store and it'll show in stock.

  • Out of stock in Balcatta (tried to buy one yesterday).

  • +1

All WA stores now showing out of stock. I must have got the last one…

Almost all other Australian stores still showing stock. Depends on which store you have selected as default as to whether its will show stock.

I always click on the "Stock Availability" tab to see where the stock is located as its often not available at my local store but is in other stores.

  • delivery to NSW $10.. would have bought if there was pick up

    • +2

      there is…

    • +1

You can pick up, need to change store from "NSW Online" to the closest store to you, and select store type of pickup.

  • Convert it to VHS format!

  • awesome just found 2 in Pascoe Vale Sth (Vic)!

    • do they have more stock ?

      • I actually ordered online, so I haven't officially bagged them, (red).

  • Thanks for this Got 1 for my young fella and 2 Disney Princess for my little girls.(Xmas Prezys)

I want to buy one, but I already have a GoPro thanks to OzBargain!

    • +1

      I don't understand your comment.

  • I bought one last week in Clayton shop, still haven't tested it, keep it for gift to someone.

  • +1

Great to use with all the batteries and SDs cards from OB.
    Takes 3xAAs :)

  • Bought one, thanks!

Aaarrrhhh just bought six cheap Chrissy presents

Is this any better than a phone camera these days?

    • No, no optical zoom means it's no better, it could be worse, there might be a single better aspect to it eg. Holding it, not running your battery down, but with no optical zoom you will be sacrificing resolution or having to stand in the exact spot to get your shot.

Maybe ok for taking YouTube videos, buy even then you probably have a better camera at home

  • Theres still some more at Dandenong

  • excellent video review bought 4 thanks OP

    • +1

That review sucks, doesn't even tell you if it has an optical zoom, digital zoom, guys sounds like a cracker pot

      • +3

What are you talking about? The review is a cult classic. burp

        • +1 for the burp

      • read the manual said 4x digital zoom, anyway it's close to useless.

  • Thanks OP. Just purchased one.

  • All over red rover, out of stock online and Slacks Creek :)

    • thanks for saving me checking malouphix.
we should get a bris petition asking for them opening on sundays

  • Thanks OP, wanted a cheap camera to play around with aside from my phone so this is perfect.

  • Was looking for a good yet cheap camcorder for my Youtube channel. Cheers OP!

  • Only online store has it in stock and they ask me to pay $10 delivery fee which is more than the price of the actual camcorder. I am not sure it is worth it.

I now regret spending $5 on this potato camera.

Could have used that $5 in buying a 2kg bag of potatoes instead. Sigh.

      • +2

        But that's a review of the DVR508

        • Had a bit of a chuckle viewing first video my apologies; Testing Vivitar DVR 1020HDshould reflect posted model.
Reasonably sharp in FHD footage mode. Still, not a patch on a OneplusOne (SONY IMX214 sensor) my 4k- shooter, although they commonly struggle in low light tests.

    • thanks so much for this link, it is basically like throw 5 bucks out of the windows for nothing.

  • Thanks :)

  • Link is for the black one. There are still quite a few red ones available, but you need to do a search.

  • +1

Just bought 5 red ones from NSW online. Postage doubled the cost, but at that price they're almost disposable. If I drop one of a cliff I'll be fairly relaxed, much more so than if I did the same with my GoPro.

  • Just got 3 of them from QLD-ONLINE and paid direct deposit to reduce handling fee, $10 delivery so not so bad.

I bought an action cam from JB-HI for the boat for $39 and it was a puss bucket, going to give one of these a try as I think I can mount this on the swivel holder I have made already.

I dont think you can go all to wrong for $5, the remainign two I will keep as spares or as a cheap present for someone (Maybe a kid?)

  • What is with the handling fee?

    • Related to shipping, they wanted $15 shipping when I was paying with either PayPal or CC, then I chose DD and it dropped down to $10 with a note stating handling fee removed due to Direct Deposit…

  • In stock Cheltenham Victoria. They run on 3 AA Batteries. I believe this camera cannot be charged.

    Video quality looks pretty terrible:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90u2cEWhYd4

    • +2

I guess the point of the deal is that it's a full functioning video camera for the cost of a sandwich. Yes, it's not very good at all, but I know people who wouldn't think twice about spending $4 on a glass of tap water diluted Coke. Use it as a disposable video camera for a stupid trick or something.

      • +1

Fair enough. Even at five bucks it's a waste of money for me though, as I'll never use it. At least I'll drink a glass of sugar water if I drop a fiver on it.

If you have a use for it though, five bucks is a bargain, for sure.

  • Crazy price. Ordered one for pickup. Was $34 at Easter - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/188344

  • I was considering getting one for reckless stupid things (and just because it's cheap), but the cost of 3*AA batteries (recurring) and shipping outweighs the novelty. Also the image quality looks worse than a mobile phone camera from many years ago, so realistically I'd probably never end up using it. +1 still

    • Ozbargainers use NiMH rechargeables

  • Bought a red one from Ultimo NSW. Showing as low stock.

  • So who else is going to collect it from ultimo nsw store tomorrow?

  • I saw this in MSY Vic - Clayton 2 weeks ago in their bargain bin among other similar cameras. Generally speaking, anything that's in the bargain bin isn't even worth their effort to buy a skip and dispose of.

  • +2

Got one as a haha gift. Somewhat awful to the maximum. It froze 5 times in 10 minutes. The photos were so far and away abysmal that a gameboy camera looks better. When you press the buttons on the left of the display it warps and feels like it's going to explode.

The REAL QUESTION? Is it better quality than Channel 9? The answer is almost yes. It is monumentally sad to say that…

    • thanks i changed my mind of ordering two.

  • Ordered one for local pickup as a $5 LED flash light for something to use my Eneloop rechargeable batteries on, with a built-in 1080p camera :-)

  • +2

Placed an order before reading comments as usual, now hope MSY won't confirm the order =))

  • +1

Thanks, bought 2 to see if I can make make a 3D vid.

    • +2

You'd look pretty badass with two of these taped together. I'm going for 4x taped together to film my own IMAX movies (or 4K if you prefer).

      • D'oh - sold one to a colleague for $10.
        I don't suppose 3K is a thing?

  • Tried pick-up no stock - SO I went delivery, managed to get 2 of these plus $10 delivery still a bargain. Thanks OP!!!

  • I'm getting nothing..how do I do delivery?

  • +3

Latest update: there is no stock and they have hundreds of back orders that they cannot fill. This price was just to get rid of existing stock, they're not going to get more stock in based on this price. Mass cancellations incoming.

    Just received this:

We suddenly received an unexpected jump in the Vivitar DVR1020HD-LIC Cam Recorder orders. At the moment, we do not have enough stock to even fulfil all the online delivery orders. Sorry for the troubles. Thank you

So they're admitting they prioritise the online orders first. Pfft, 'whatever'. Greenie REVOKED!

  • My order history is now showing ready to dispatch, I ordered soon after the deal was posted (Vic online).

  • Dear Customer,
The product you seek is currently out of stock at the moment. Please check with us on a later date or alternative.
    Thank you for email us.
    Best Regards,

    • Same reply that I got

  • Nooooooooo :(

Got an super helpful email that said:

Your order is ready for pickup. Reference #XXX.

Due to high demand of the cameras you’ve ordered, unfortunately on this occasion we cannot supply the unit/s to you.

    Payment refunded in full
No disposable video cam for me…sad face

    • Me too refunded…

    • I got an extra one, if anyone wants it they can have it for $5+postage from SA

  • Just was at fyshwick one and they still have heaps of red ones left

    • +1

      Thank you.

  • I was at Ultimo today picking mine up and the guy said they all sold out there. Also got two emails from MSY before picking up - the first one saying my order was processed and ready for pickup, while the second one said they had no stock but had an alternative $5 camcorder.

  • I got a second one (in red) if someone wants it. $5 + postage from SA

  • Anyone find that you have to record in 720P to get the best result as shooting in 1080P and panning the video looks choppy/jerky?

Not sure if it is because of the camera's cheap components or my PC not being able to playback 1080P video smoothly.

    • +2

Yep, same here. I figured that 1080p records in 15fps only, while 720p records a smooth 30fps. Tried the lower resolutions and they are 30fps too.

      • Thanks, at least I know now it is not my PC that is causing the problem.
