Cheapest Way to Freight a 40kg Item from AU to NZ

Hi everybody,

When my parents were last visiting from NZ, my Dad impulse bought an antique cannon barrel that weighs approx 35kg.

Because it is over 32kg (1 piece), airlines wouldn't accept it as luggage so they left it at my place, and I would really like to send it to them to get rid of it!

The problem is, all the quotes I have received from places that will deliver a ~40kg parcel have been over $400. Surely there is a cheaper way.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get it to NZ?

  • And just to add - I am on the sunshine coast. It seems ridiculous to me that freight is $400+ for a ~40kg parcel, while a one way plane ticket to NZ can be had for ~$130 on sale.

    LOL

    ways approx 35kg.

Have you had a look at pack and send? have you got a quote from other companies that do sea freight? Have you had a look on gumtree/asked around on fb to see if anyone is moving to nz?

    • Pack and send = $427.

Dont know anyone moving to NZ at the moment. Ill try gumtree.

  • Contact an LCL consolidator like AGS World.
Not sure how much it will cost but they will send it via Seafreight and it should take just under a week to get to NZ (depending on the service that they put it on and depending on the port that you need it sent to).
But it should definitely cost wayyyy less than $400.

It was a impulse purchase can't they deal with the cost?

    But seriously get some quotes

Contract the place they bought it from if it was a shop and ask if they have anyone they recommend.

You could also call any antique dealer in your state and see if there is anyone they can suggest.

    • Thanks. Already talked to the place they bought it from, no dice.

The parcel2courier.com place is $217 door to door, so it looks like the go for now.

  • Contact Air New Zealand Cargo and ask if you can get it on their MCY-AKL flight?

If your oversized item is not one of the examples listed above and the width is over 1 metre, we recommend that you contact us to ascertain if your piece will fit on our aircraft. You will need to supply the length, width and height of your item.

Thanks. Talked to them and so far they are the cheapest @ $211 Airport-to-Airport.

      • Awesome. I honestly didn't even know if they would do it, so that's great that they can.

This route is seasonal but I think it's flying until October and then it flies again in December-January.
