Medicare Cards

We have had the same family Medicare cards for nearly two decades. Three children are now in the early 20s.
I've noted vaguely in the past some concerns with privacy and how much you tell the government in setting up Medicare. I'd like to know if any of these concerns remain. I have no specifics to ask about.
Because, I am now thinking that the kids should have their own cards and we would then need a new card for the two of us. What might I be letting ourselves in for, if anything?

    You get a plastic card.

Where exactly are you going with this? What don't you think medicare has access to, that the ATO etc does? Hate to break it to you, but they're all entwined.

    • This. All government agencies have the ability to notify each other of notable changes to your details.

So no, I wouldn't think you're disadvantaging yourself making changes to your Medicare details. And realistically, what's the alternative? Don't apply for Medicare. You're going to be in for lots of unnecessary bills and a load of extra paperwork for pretty much any health-related consultation. All of this to try and avoid a government evil that may not even exist.

  • so they are providing you with a free service, medical care and u are concerned they are invading ur privacy….
time to go to another country that doesn't offer u the same free medical care!

    • Free? Is it? More like 2% of your salary + approx.50% of the medical services cost out of pocket.

      • which aint that much, and that's if he is employed! and once you hit the safely limit is close to free, GP's are free, u can get free dental, free emergency care in hospitals

I'm pretty sure you can keep your card and and your children can easily get their own with there own name. Makes it alot simpler than the whole family carrying one card to all medical appointments… Not sure what privacy concerns or what your really asking.. Just get your children to go apply..

    • I'm 21 and I have my own card, but I'm also listed on the family card which my parents both carry.

  • You don't get a new card. Your kids will just get a new card and remain on yours.

All they need is your name, address and medicare number, see application form. What exactly is the problem? You're giving them information they already have on you and your family.

What might I be letting ourselves in for, if anything?

Your kids will have their own cards so they don't need to borrow yours any time they need to use one.

    What concerns? And why?

I think the info is collected and distributed to bikies or Jehovah witnesses

  • I've got my own card.. I no longer appear on my parents cards.

  • Thanks all. As recommended, I will leave things as they are and the kids can just get their own.
