Does eBay/PayPal protect the Seller from Fraudulent Buyers?

Haven't sold on eBay for a long time, and have a couple of items I'm thinking of selling both locally and internationally. I'm wondering what PayPal is like these days for the seller, how safe is it for me to send an item after bidding has ended, and payment received from PayPal? Is it still possible for people to pay with hacked accounts to trick me into sending the item across?

PS - any recommendations for an easy courier, or shold I stick to Aust Post?

  • yes it is safe for you to send your item once Paypal have cleared the funds. I highly recommend getting your items tracked or registered.

Thank you. Definitely tracked and insured (passing the cost onto the buyer).

Not true, it's only safe if the buyer wants an legitimate refund which is where the tracked and insured comes to play. If the buyer chooses to claim through something like credit card reversal (scammers will be all over these methods), the tracking means nothing since it's not an issue of delivery, nor will you be compensated by the insurance something like Auspost only care if it's been signed.

The general rule is, don't sell what you aren't willing to lose.

        Glass half empty attitude.imo

        • ? I don't think that means what you think it means.

    Nonononono.

Last I heard, Paypal very, very strongly favours the buyer in all cases. Like, they can just make any old claim and get an automatic refund and you're screwed. Producing hard evidence that the buyer is a complete fraud apparently doesn't make any difference - Paypal and ebay won't even look at it.

Paypal promises everything to buyers, and very little to sellers. Don't think I've had a good outcome as a seller (whenever a dispute pops up) in more than 10 years of selling. In one case, even with a tracking receipt the buyer still claims he didn't receive the item - so I end up out of pocket for the item and the shipping cost.

    • I've had that exact same thing happen to me however I provided evidence through the receipt that the tracking number which matched the one I uploaded to eBay, which stated that the parcel was delivered. PayPal ruled in my favour and I kept my funds. Not all that bad, I think there may have been some humans on shift when I made my case

  • So, how often do scammers pop up? Sounds like nothing gets sold on EBay at all! Basically I'm evaluating the new iPhone, and if I like it I will keep it and sell my old 6, otherwise I will sell the 6s. Should I offer this to international buyers or not?

    • There are plenty of things that can go in favor of scammers when electronics are involved: 1. significant item not as described (scratches, power, signal, dents) 2. lost item - UNLESS YOU USE REGISTERED POST WITH SIGNATURE ON DELIVERY, not just tracking 3. item stopped working (say, scammer broke the item and it's his fault, he can still claim item issue warranty - with eBay and Paypal siding him. Yes, you will get your item back, but it's next to useless now).

It will cost an arm and a leg to send an item overseas with tracking and signature.

If it's an iPhone, you're better off selling on gumtree.

  • Worst case scenario is if I sell to international buyer, send with insurance and tracking, and he picks it up and reverses payment, you are saying that PayPal won't uphold my claim?

    • I've heard plenty of stories online from people who say exactly that - the buyer was a total fraud, they had proof of delivery, but they still lost both the item and the money. I guess sellers just take the risk and wear any losses, since most people do pay.

    • If you send international and buyer refuses to pick up - you will lose out if the claim goes through ebay.

    WARNING!

    It's getting worse.

Paypal claims can now be made 6 months after sending. Tracking doesn't always guarantee a win.

ebay is about to get worse in February.
More or less compulsory tracking - unless you want defects to build up.
    Their "guarantee" is totally slanted.

    Fraud increasing.

  • After bad experience in my last two sales, I am steering clear from selling on eBay.

One buyer tried to scam me by telling me she didn't get the item when it's actually been signed on the same morning. Saying something like "you will get your money back from the postal guy, will you refund my money".

Second buyer came over whenever she felt like despite my repeat messages asking what time are you coming and she completely ignored it. I waited for her to come for two days. (I know this instance could happen even through gumtree but at least no fee involved there).

    • Hi Pandabun, with your first case above, did you manage sort it out with or without eBay/PayPal intervention? What did she say when you mentioned that the tracking clearly says it's been signed for?

  • And if you havent been selling on eBay and not using PayPal as a seller and dont have a proven high volume good feedback seller account, note that you will not be able to have the money in your bank account before shipping the goods. PayPal will hold the buyers money for approx 21 days before putting it into your bank account, so they have they money available to easily give back to the buyer should they dispute. You will know that the buyer has paid PayPal though.

And of course aa a seller you cannot choose your buyer. As someone else said, dont sell anything you aren't prepared to lose. Just like any business, a certain percentage of loss has to be factored in to your sales. Good luck and hope you aren't one of the unlucky ones.

  • I never had any issues with PayPal. Buyers never asked for refund/return. All buyers were decent.
My experience with eBay customer service team was really bad. They never try to help me (as a seller) to solve a problem.
I used ebay for a long time until had an issue with a buyer. CS came back with copy and paste policy over and over again (even telling me the same messages over a phone call) and never really looked to help me as a person/customer. More like wanting to close my case/get it out of the way. Haven't sold/bought anything from ebay since.
