PotPlayer is a great free player with fantastic DVD/Blu-Ray support
It's also awful quality, try http://cccp-project.net or K-Lite codec pack if you playback anything HD. MPC-HD has much better picture quality on HD files.
VLC is redeemed if you are using it as a streaming server to re-broadcast something or if you are capturing from a physical device like a firewire camcorder or if you are using it on someone elses computer since you can get portable version without installation required.

Maybe technically correct but not accurate. Media Player will not play any DVD or Blu-ray disc directly unless you rip them first (or get the Pro version).
