Staying In Ireland (3-12 months). Best Way To Change To Euros. Best Travel Insurance.

Hey Ozbargainers! I'm travelling to Ireland to live with my Gf for 3-12mnths (depending on getting accepted for a Working visa). Wondering if you guys had any suggestion to transfer money from AU to Ireland.

I do know travelling with cash is not safe and I only have a medium amount of cash under 10g.. I'm leaving mid Oct(flights booked) and need travel insurance for a year… Knowing me I'll need a hospital trip or two.. Would love and help any suggestions so fire away….

TL;DR what's cheapest and best suitable travel insurance and bank or something to change money and take to Europe while taking money out occasionally and getting transfers from AU….

Open a Citibank Account. Then transfer money from your Aussie account to it. Use the Citibank card for ATM cash withdrawals (free) and as a VISA debit card also.
Has online app to keep an eye on it and you can then transfer more money into it when needed.
Very very easy and no fees.
No need to 'change money' at all.

    Use TID for insurance.

    • Thank you! I've heard about Citibank and thought that might be one of the best options… And amazingly well price insurance aswell I'll keep researching but looks very promising.

  • Watch travel insurance. If you tend to have to let them know how long the trip is. Its not always possible to extend. So check first. If not you may need to elect to travel for 12 months not the 3 months

  • We went with one of the mainstream insurers, world nomads

You can generally get a 10% discount code off retailmenot.

I think you can get a policy any time, but takes 48 hours to come into effect

They advertise "extending" your policy at the same rate, however if you make a claim on the first policy, it's considered a "pre existing" condition on the extended policy, which is considered a separate policy. So hold off until right before you leave before booking.

    • With a 10% discount nomads seem to be Twenty dollars cheaper than TID, without me looking into details of what's included though I cannot find anywhere to enters the coupon on their site continued to payment but had to stop at the payment option as I only use PayPal myself… I'm unsure about that one.. Just for that though I can always get mum to pay but where's the coupon box!!!

      • no idea

for such a small $ difference, you really need to compare the small prints between them…..excesses etc…

    • Man I've just woken up still in bed and on my phone another 80% charge till I get up!

In due time you sound like my mum
