Changing Internet Company. Suggestions ?

Hi all,

I am currently really sick of the slow internet connections lately. I am with iinet for about..5~8 years now. Recently got an email random upgraded our data to 400GB.

But the speed is still slow. http://i.imgur.com/tAJT3Sf.png

Sometimes when I open Facebook… it load barely full page. I scroll 1 sec and it just take about 10~15 mins to load the next part.
When I try to watch a vine video.. It doesn't even load and after few mins…The video appear and starts to load.

I live near Hurstville area. Does anyone know any better internet provider ? I am also using TP-LINK AC750 Wireless Modem Router Archer D2.

Many thanks!

What are your modem stats? changing ISP might not solve your slow internet problem as it will be using the same crusty copper lines back to the exchange.

I have been using TPG for two years now, they have very great speed, reasonable prices, unlimited downloads, and they recently connect my building to Optic Fibre so it is even faster than before. You don't really get any customer support, or compensation for down-time, it is in the contract. But I have never needed either, it is always up. They are limited to specific regions, mainly major cities - Hurstville should be on their map though. I would get a Netgear 300 or 600 modem if I were you. They are well supported across a range of networks, easy to use, and my internet speed jumped dramatically the moment I swapped out my old Billion modem for a Netgear 300. Good luck.

From what I understand, the exchange capacity and the modem are the 2 biggest factors.

What I am saying is that you might go through all the hassle and get no improvement.

Good luck though. For what it's worth I have iinet and our speeds are great. Netgear 6200 modem.

  • What this guy said ^^ + distance to adsl exchange. Maybe try cable or nbn if you can get it (different connection than adsl)

iiNet has gone to the dogs in this past year. Only reasons I am with them is cause I am off contract.

  • Your screenshot shows 14 ms ping and 2 Mbps download speed. That is nowhere near slow enough to be causing stuff like you describe:

Sometimes when I open Facebook… it load barely full page. I scroll 1 sec and it just take about 10~15 mins to load the next part.
When I try to watch a vine video.. It doesn't even load and after few mins…The video appear and starts to load.

How many computers/phones/TVs/whatever are using your internet connection? Could it just be your laptop being slow, or something?

    • IT says that. But when I load Facebook live. It just starts to lag. I'm running on the macbook pro 13'' top spec, I don't think it would be my laptop.

I turn off the wifi connection with my phone and iPad. I think 2 iPad is also on sleep mode(family) sooo yeah. Nothing else. Just my laptop and 2 iPad (sleep mode).

      • No, what I'm saying is, it sounds like there is malware or something running on your PC and slowing it down.

From the symptoms you describe, the cause is very unlikely to be the internet connection, nor just your hardware not being fast enough.

Is the internet slow on your phone and ipad, too? As slow as your laptop?

        • The internet runs Facebook all right on the phone and iPad. No lag or anything.

Pages on the computer lags, on Spotify, I always get the message no internet connections and then it reconnects again. When I load IG on the browser, it doesn't load for a fair min then it loads few photos.

Just now as we speak, I clicked edit button for this comment. It wouldn't even load.

        • @SourCream3000:

So it sounds like the internet is not slow at all, rather there is some kind of other problem with your laptop.

        • @mgowen:

I did an update on the firmware for my modem and reset everything.

Facebook still lags, LoL also lag. Even if it is only me connected. Still lags..I did a malwarebytes run and cleaner…nothing changes.

Also i didn't ask before, but do you get the same speed plugged in via an ethernet cable to the modem? (disable your airport if you do this). Just to eliminate wireless as being the issue. If it's the same, 2.1 Mbit/s works out to be about 274 kBs a second download - so yeah for a 50MB video that's about 3 mins to download - if no-one else is using the net at the same time.. If you have a whole bunch of ads and spyware clogging things up then that is going to make it even slower.

I would suggest get these and see if your situation improves:

    • get adblock plus for your browser (suggest use chrome or firefox).
    • malwarebytes (it is available for mac free)

Make sure all the rest of the pcs have the same, and are virus/spyware free too as that will impact other pcs on the network.

    • My macbook doesn't have the cable. Everyone at home also just use wireless. I am trying to download malwarebytes now for my mac and see if there's any different. I also use CCleaner before

      • Just Curious, which company did you end up on?

        • Sorry to get back to you late.

I'm still on the same old one.. iinet. Any suggestions ?

        • @SourCream3000:

I'm with TPG now. That are so so in Hurstville area

        • @shadow131: whats the download speed you are getting now?

  • Try OpenDNS addresses instead of whatever you're currently using. I had a friend a while ago experience this & it fixed the slow browsing.

The setting is in network somewhere- sorry, I don't have a Mac to find it. Look for the DNS tab.

    These are the addresses:

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

Once you've changed them, close & reopen Safari.

    Good luck!
