Ben & Jerry's "Sweet Cream & Cookies" Ice Cream 458ml $3.12 @ Coles (Nationwide?!)

1150

Usually ~$12

Found out this afternoon that I'm getting shipped off to rural Victoria against my will for all of next year so I went to my local Coles (Box Hill VIC) to get some ice cream. Surprised to see this at $3.12. Called up the girlfriend, who lives in Sydney, who confirmed that she had seen it at this price too. It's not short dated.

Still getting sent to the country but the ice cream is ok.

Notes:

  • Even if not marked at $3.12 at your local store it should scan at this price.
  • Please send your thanks to my girlfriend, if you run into her.

  • Thanks tony, will go check it out later.

  • Haven't tried this flavour before…how sweet is sweet?

    • +25

It's not too sweet. I would say about the sweetness of your average vanilla ice cream, maybe a tiny bit less (and without the vanilla).

Please bear in mind I am not a professional ice cream sweetness rater so I cannot give formal or definitive ice cream sweetness rating advice.

we tasted 3 different brands of cookies and cream ice-cream last night: Sara Lee , B&Js and Connoisseur. B&Js came second. It has nice , chunky, almost crunchy pieces of oreo-like cookies. However the actual ice-cream was meh. Connoiseur was by far everyone's favourite.

      • +17

Was your study blinded? Did it account for confounders? Were your results statistically significant? What kind of analyses of variance were performed?

        • +23

Study was conducted by 2 young statisticians.
          Sample size n=4
Modal age of statisticians = 6.5years old

The term "blinded" was applied literally during the experiment.

That should pretty much answer all your questions:)

        • +13

          @Jar Jar Binks:

The term "blinded" was applied literally during the experiment.

Oh god! Ethical no, valid yes. Those poor children. All in the name of science.

        • @Jar Jar Binks: n=4 is not a statistically significant sample size. No way it would pass Kolmogorov-Smirnov or any assumptions of normality

Please include in your discussion limitations of small sample size

I find this information incredibly intriguing. Apart from me being completely and utterly biased (I vote B&J followed by Sara Lee, then Connoisseur - based on the ice cream texture and consistency and creaminess alone not on flavours/chunks/pieces/bits).

But I would genuinely like to ask without showing my bias, what those kids think of each type they had in a blind test. Just to compare my own preferences to theirs. Actually, I'd be interested in being the guinea pig in a blind test myself…. hmmmmmmmmm

edit - oh wait, by "those kids" I had assumed you'd had the party for all the kids already (was careful not to say the B&J party there, in case it started an uproar around here… lawlz).

      • I really enjoy bulla creamy cookies and cream. I was surprised that wasn't included in the study.

      • +1

Yeah connosouier make great ice cream their belgium chocolate has highest coco content in the supermarket fridge

        • Except they seem to have gotten rid of their white chocolate and raspberry, which is the only one i ever bought and am not enticed by any of their other current offerings.

  • Are you sure it's nation-wide? "Quick sale" to me would imply clearance stock.

    • +8

It's this price at 2 stores in separate states.

While a (n=2) study is not ideal, it would imply that the promotion is being run in at least 2 states, although that doesn't in itself preclude the possibility of it being a clearance.

It might just be those two stores, but I think in all likelihood it will be quite a few more.

  • +3

Needed a couple of those for a party that I'm having this weekend. I thought," why not negotiate a deal for everyone else too, Tightarse-style?"
So here you go! No need to thank me. Coupon code is : longlivejjb. Enjoy! :p

  • What are you doing in Rural Vic Tony? Setting up the new refugee accommodation areas with Daniel? http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/australia-should-increase-…

    • He's probably laying low until the next election.

  • NO…I was just there an hour ago and grabbed some of the Coles branded Turkish Delight for desserts. I would've swooped on this if I opened my eyes. Will get up early and grab some if there's any left 😀
    Awesome price, thanks OP

    • Coles Turkish Delish ice cream is awesome. Tastes like the Cadbury Fry's Turkish Delight which I love.

      • Thanks for the heads up. Fry's Turkish Delight is the best, so I'll check out the ice cream.

  • Save me some. I'll come visit you

FYI none at Coles Grote St Adelaide (they never sold it). Was walking past so thought I'd check.

Edit according to Coles Online it's not sold in SA

    • I went to Coles at Altona North, they never sold it either. I will be checking at Watergarden SC tomorrow and report back.

    • I think foodland is the only supermarket to stock it in sa. I went on a wild B&J goose chase before it was common in SA as I'd been told coles stocked it. Couldn't find it at a handful of them…then it started popping up at foodland

      • +1

Woolies in SA have it as well. Avalaible online and in store.

        • +1

Yep, I can confirm woolies in SA sells it in store now.

The Woolies at Unley has/had this flavour for $10 the other day where all others were full price.

        • +1

          @Romen:
Oh I might have to pay more attention at the woolies I go to then! Although they struggle to have fresh meat so I guess special ice cream might be a bit much to ask for!

  • +2

    Taylor, is that really you??

    • +3

You got fooled by tony again. LoL

      • +4

Oh well, I'll shake it off!

  • +1

Saw it @ Noosa yesterday, but had sold out.

  • -1

If you like Cookies & Cream check out the Coles own brand ice-cream at $4.70 for a litre - in Sydney anyway.

All natural with high cream (fat) content. No artificial colours or flavours.

    • how good is it ? if you've tasted it what would you give out of 10 ? Cheers mate :D

      • +1

7.5/10 & Coles own brand Rum & Raisin 9.5/10…definitely worth trying

  • A fair few left at chadstone Sc but in the Ben and jerry's fridge in the corner

  • Still got 2 left from the giveaway this week…. My friend has 8 tubs. We don't know what to do with it

    • I couldn't make it to the event and would happily take some off your hands :P it would feed an otherwise ice cream-less uni student ^_^

      • No joke, the line at sydney uni was massive. They tried to get rid of the ice cream as soon as possible by changing from giving each person 1 to 8 each. Apart from those living on campus, I don't know how the rest got them home.. I presume they just gave it to their friends

  • +2

They had some at Indooroopilly in QLD, but it wasn't marked down.

  • +2

    Thanks. I love BJ's

    • +4

      How's the after taste?

      • +2

        "Sweet Cream and Cookies"

      • What's the texture like?

        • +3

Slides down the throat quite easily.

        • +2

          @waterlogged turnip:

Slides down the throat quite easily.

ahem in Cleveland voice … Oh that's nasty!

  • Picked up some for this price at Surry Hills Sydney last night. Just assumed it was store only at the time

    • +1

seems to be a lot of people getting BJ's in Surry Hills

  • Seems like my first cheap opportunity to ditch the Connoisseur and try Ben & Jerrys….going to my local Coles shortly to find some.

    • In my opinion, nothing I have found beats Connoisseur. Their cookies and cream is in point.

  • Insufficient sample size

  • +1

    Also available at Epping (NSW).

  • Did you leave any for us? How many tubs are left?

  • Checked Coles parkmore keysborough not reduced

  • None in elsternwick

  • -4

    Taytay!

      haters gonna hate

    • +1

      shake it off….

  • +2

Have Coles been selling this for long? Don't think I've ever seen Ben and Jezz in their freezers :(

    • It's been a while I think. I never buy it, it just too damn expensive $12 for 500ml. I can get 2L Sara Lee or 1.5L of Connoisseur

  • Global Warming provisions! Thanks, Tony.

  • +1

can't find it in Maroubra Junction Coles (2035), might have it in city or eastgardens

  • +2

    None at Ashfield NSW :(

  • Wow, hope I can find some!

  • +3

Found stock at Macquarie centre, not marked down, but asked the staff to scan and check, and it came up as $3.12. So seems to be nation widewide! Still 8 left at Macquarie, but the staff were eyeing them off.

  • This almost makes this over priced ice cream seem cheap. But it's still more exxy than most brands, and it doesn't taste much better.

    • It really does taste much better :)

The base ice cream is fantastic and it just goes to show how different peoples tastes are with some ranking Sara Lee on par or better. Can understand people not liking B&Js for the bits and odd combinations (thankfully I love that) - but the ice cream? What's wrong with it exactly? Maybe some people are just used to the emulsified, full of air stuff with lower milk fat.

Overpriced? No question there! Its something I'll buy as a treat and eat slowly.

      • -1

What's wrong with it? Did I say it's wrong, or bad?

I'm purely saying it's no better than others. But at this price, u still pay almost $7 per litre

  • I was at Coles Box Hill last night, so didn't go tonight. Probably all will be gone tomorrow. :(

  • No reduction at burwood vic

    • Should still scan at $3.12.

    • +1

Confirm price scans at $3.12 at Burwood store. Picked one up and left 3 for other OzBargainers :)

      • Ledge

  • They were giving away tubs of the chunky monkey flavor in the city last week… sounds like they might be in trouble, so i keep an eye our for further reductions.

  • Thanks OP, bought the last 3 at Coles Chadstone.

  • -5

Yuck…Sick of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, especially the chunky monkey flavour.

There are like 100 tubs in my university's freezer next to the morgue. I am going to throw them all out on Monday. Bloody students…

I saw about 10,000 people eating a tub of ice cream last Wednesday in the camperdown area.

  • +1

They were giving away 8 Packs of Ben and Jerry's at USYD on Wednesday xD. The ones I got expired in October so that's probably why they were giving them away.

    • Oh right, that's why they were so keen! USYD Represent!

  • Can anyone confirm if it's available in Canberra?

  • Anyone know where I can get Green Tea ice cream in SA? not the expensive gelato shops, but supermarket prices

    • My wife buys it from the Asian supermarkets from time to time.

      • Thanks! Which ones?

        • +1

I'm not in SA, but most Asian grocers should sell some form of it - like red bean, it's a very popular flavour in Asian countries.

        • Yup as agentsmith said, asian grocers usually sell it. The one sold in NSW chinese shops is made by La Creme, which is the supplier for Passionflower

        • @cwongtech: Thanks will go look

    • Buy an ice cream machine and make your own. I find green tea rather bland.

  • the prices are 3.12 when scanned in WA as well, although not advertised. Only the sweet cream and cookies one though

  • +1

None here in parramatta or west ryde

  • +2

8 or so left in Inglewood WA

  • +2

OP, you are about as soft as the ice-cream.

I hope your time in the country toughens you up a little.

Being a doctor is going to be hard. The first few years a shock to the system. Rural medicine is important.

I've got some experience - I'm a country boy who was in your position at Monash Med some years ago.

Good luck to you though - you will learn lots.

  • Full price at Indooroopily Brisbane QLD

    • Did you scan it to make sure?

      • Not really, as soon as I saw the original price tag, I gave it up, but might try again tomorrow

        • A lot of people have been reporting seeing it marked full price but then scanning at $3.12. No one who's tried scanning it has found it to be full price, even if it is marked so. Best of luck for tomorrow.

        • @tony abbott:
Yep, the Coles in WA I went to, still had the original price but it scans at the sale price.
          Thanks OP

  • Where are these located in Coles? I checked three stores in QLD (yesterday morning) and there was no sight of Ben and Jerrys :( I searched the entire cold section

    • Some of the Coles stores have their own special Ben & Jerry's freezer.

  • Checked two of the Doncaster stores in VIC. Didn't have any. I don't think they even stock Ben & Jerry's.
