iPad Air 2 16GB $569 (RRP $699), 64GB $687 (RRP $829) @ Officeworks

340

Apple didn't update the ipad air 2 at their event today but they have increased the RRP of the ipad air 2 due to the weaker AUD.

Time to get one now before all merchants increase their prices on line with the new RRPs.

So the bargain here is old RRP?

    • Yep. The dollar ain't buying 90c+ anymore.

  • +44

Well, this has to be the worst iPad update ever. Only the price was upgraded!

    • +29

Should I sell my old iPad air 2 and get the new price upgrade edition though?

      • +2

        Milk…out of my nose…stings so bad….
        LOL

    • Yes this is contemptous!

  • Any iphone deals please

  • +3

    Not a great deal…

I bought iPad Air2 64GB from Officeworks for $619 back in May 2015.

    • can you still get it anywhere for that price?

    • And I turned 20 20+ years ago

      Oh well…

      • That's a lot of 21st birthdays to plan.

      • +1

oh well…. go and get one, who is stopping you. I just shared my opinion that it is not a great deal as I bought it for cheaper price.

        • Fair point, and i agree its not a great deal, but if someone wants one now then knowing what you paid last year doesnt mean much unless you know where you can get it now for that price.

Last year the dollar was worth more.

Just like 20 years ago I could buy petrol cheaper

And this is just my opinion also :) so we are equal :)

        • @RockyRaccoon:

Where did I mention that I bought one last year ??

        • +1

@OzSikhs: His sticks to his opinion. There was absolutely no harm in making people aware of the historical low price even if that price is not available right now.

He is very happy going back 20 years when historical low was only a few months ago. Although dollar has tanked a lot since then however knowing lowest price of the year does makes a difference sometimes in going ahead with a purchase.

        • @OzSikhs: No harm, but I don't think it makes this "not a good deal".

The deal you got was good, no doubt. But this is good in the current environment/context.

        • @illumination: as I mentioned earlier that is my opinion.

        • +2

@OzSikhs: lol I did not say it was not your opinion or tell you not to express your opinion
I just expressed disagreement with your opinion which I am sure I am entitled to do, as is anyone else here.

        • @illumination:

          illumination confirmed

      • The point he's making is that in the past, this exact same product cost less. So I agree that it's not a great deal.

  • iPad Pro AU pricing hasn't been released to compare with this :(

    • iPad Pro is gonna be like $1200-1400. It's definitely not going to be a bargain.

Anyway just snap the screen off your 12" Macbook and you have an iPad Pro with a detachable keyboard.

      • +1

It starts at $799 US. I would hope it would be $999 AU for the 32GB model.

        • Don't forget the GST.
$878.90 USD after 10% tax, therefore it'd be around $1261.31 AUD, if we just use the exchange rate to convert it.

  • +5

This could be the lowest price for ipad in the world. This deal is 26% cheaper than buying it in USA. Even the new price is 10.5% cheaper than USA pricing. Here is the proof:

    ipad air 2 wifi 64gb

    price USD$599
    state tax USD$46.57
    total USD$645.57

conversion to AUD using XE: AUD$925

Pricing in Australia from apple store with updated price: $829

    Deal here $687

this price is 26% cheaper what can be purchased in USA. If you can get the GST back its $624 or 32% less

    • Stupid question: how can I get GST back?

      • +1

travel over seas and get the discount from airport GST center ;p

They are just price matching the good guys http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/computers-tablets-and-accessor…

I would get officeworks to price beat the 128gb $807 at the Good Guys http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/apple-ipad-air-2-wi-fi-128gb-g… Officeworks has theirs at $852 https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/m20ProductDisplayView?ca… it should come to $766.65

    • Not Ciab. OW has reduced their 128gb down to $807 as well… I was planing to get a price match as you mention… but its to late now… :(

      • Just noticed this now too. What time did this happen :(

        • Hi abc. If you have access to Costco, you can grab the 128gb version for "only" $799. Tell you something. In fear that Apple Australia will jack up their prices due to our low AUD dollars, I wanted to buy one before that happened. Yesterday I called up OW. I live in between Liverpool and Bankstown (in Sydney). They told me the ONLY store which had ONE in stock was the Caringbah store. I didn't want to travel to far for that so I planned to order online. But as I was a bit busy during the day I didn't get the time. Early this morning I noticed OW had increased the price to $852. And yet that is the cheapest price you can find it online for here in Sydney. I was very upset and told my self that I should have acted earlier. But by coincidence I was shopping at Costco earlier I found out they sold it for "only" $799. No snoozing this time I tell ya… hihi

        • @Lone star:

Thanks mate. Although my Costco membership expired so I still have to pay $859 there lol.

I think I will just wait for the iPad Pro. Better to pay "normal" price for something brand new than to pay an unfair jacked up price for something that is a year old and depreciated. I'm a firm believer in value.

That or just get a Surface 3/4 screw Apple's BS :D

        • +1

Well. Its ok if you want to wait for a newer iPad model or maybe get a Surface instead. But if you didn't know this, then you will know it now. With Costco you can cancel your membership card and get a refund without have to return all the items you have bought of course. Imagine you have bought food and drink… hmmm how would you return that… lol

  • +1

Yikes. I'm buying an iPad for a Christmas present - is it too early to buy it now?

I can't see how I will be able to get it as cheap as now. Christmas sales aren't that usually that good.

    • -3

wait till next month when Apple introduces iPad Air 3

      • Probably, but will they drop the price back to previous levels? Unlikely.

I had a look at my credit card rewards and got an iPad Air 32Gb for approx $462 worth of points.

        • +2

No chance of iPad Air 3 this year. If it was going to happen then the iPad Pro would not have been announced this morning…

  • +4

Consider the Apple Australia Refurb Store if you want cheap. Quick glance suggests prices haven't changed from yesterday.

    • +1

Cheers, the prices are still the old ones so the refurb store offers a good deal. Just ordered a 64GB iPad Air 2 Wifi from there for $629.

I've never seen a Officeworks GC at Woolies….

    • +2

Pretty sure Woolies don't sell Officeworks gift cards.

  • Hi, Can I price beat on line? thanks

    • +1

I believe you have to call OW then they can have it delivered at no cost.

      • thanks

  • Any idea if the price of the iPad Air 2 64GB will drop any further around Christmas? I saw previous deals where it was $650. Also TGG has dropped it to $687 to match OW. http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/apple-ipad-air-2-wi-fi-64gb-go…

    • +1

The direction AU dollar is heading there seems to be very little chance of heavy discounting this Christmas. Buy now if you can.

    • +1

I second what ozdesi said. Also, companies don't change the price often (there is a cost associated with changing price as well), so even if AUD recovers, the changes won't be seen on the price for a while.

      • Thanks. I'll probably get one tomorrow. I was thinking of using my mebank card and paywaving to get an extra 5% off. Maybe getting 6x$100 gift cards at different places. Have any of you tried this before?

        • Nah, never been an Apple person (though iPads probably are something that I'd want).

    • Just rang my nearest apple store
price has gone up they are selling at $820
      64 GB ipad air2
picked one at office works $687

Personally I think it's a better bargain to stop paying inflated prices for Apple equipment and get a good Android tablet.

But I guess if you must have an iPad and don't want to work with Google/Android you have no choice and better grab one of these now.

    • iPads are alright. I think iPad Air 2 still offers the best SoC among the tablets including the Android flagship tablets that are released in Australia (Exynos 5433 might be able compete with it but it's not released in Australia yet), and iPads do have advantages in optimisation (simply because app developers don't have to worry too much about different hardware).

That said, iPads are also very expensive as well, I wouldn't pay over $400 for a toy like ARM tablet in general.

EDIT: Tegra K1 might be able to compete withn it (The newer nexus models never left a huge impression on me), but I think along with optimisation (from app perspective) and having apps for tablet longer does give iPads an edge.

      • Look, there's absolute advantages - no doubt. Being able to control hardware/OS has certainly made it a more stable platform, and the service….seriously….I only wish other manufacturers would follow suit. Just dealing with Samsung, Panasonic and HTC as examples where multiple phone calls are necessary, factory resets, basically having to beg on my knees to get something fixed is certainly heart breaking in this day and age when on the two occasions I've had to ring Apple, they've given me a reference number and where I can drop the unit in to to get fixed immediately. Done deal. I do miss that.

If the iPad had a more live desktop type experience (instead of just rows of static icons), and iTunes was uninvented so I can just drag and drop stuff off my tablet, it absolutely will go on my consideration list.

But honestly the performance of my (current) Nexus 9 or as you mention the new tablets coming out is more than plenty for what I do. The most intense thing I do is play Real Racing 3 and that's a perfect experience. For me if the iPad is 10% quicker on benchmark really does not mean a thing. As long as I touch the screen and things open immediately (no lag) I'm happy :)

Same with OSX and Windows though. You can easily build a WinTel machine that will blow ANY apple device off the planet in Benchmarks. That does not make the Apple device inferior, as most people would never need that amount of power. Really you only need it (on a consumer level) if you like your 4K gaming. Especially if you're mad and want 3 screens lol.

        • I frankly think iOS nor the Android offers "desktop type" of experience. ARM devices will not be able to replace x86-64 device for awhile (if anyone tries to use iPad Pro as a counter example, I'd say with same kind of cash, you can grab a Surface Pro 3).

As I said, iPads are alright, I'd not dismiss anyone for wanting one. I think you pay slight premium but I wouldn't say it's inflated.

Apple does provide better service than other manufacturers in Australia and iPads are one of the best ARM tablet out there, with A8X being developed for tablet and all. Not to mention, many accessories are built solely for iPads (probably because a single model of iPad (i.e. iPad Air 2) probably sold a lot compared to any single model of Android tablets).

In terms of optimisation, I can whinge about Android being piss awful (Office on Android is piss awful, etc) but I cannot say anything about iPads since I've never owned one. I never liked iTunes nor the idea of being stuck with one company too much. That said, the lags I've seen on the Android tablet vs old iPad tablet does tell me that Android apps are less optimised at least.

iPads are probably the best ARM tablets out there. A8x I believe is better than any SoCs used in tablets currently (http://wccftech.com/initial-apple-a8x-gpu-benchmarks-beats-t…). So, I don't think they are charging a ridiculous price for what they offer. Would I want one? Going back to what I've said before:

I wouldn't pay over $400 for a toy like ARM tablet in general.

Surface 3 probably is on par with Exynos 5420, Snapdragon 800 era SoCs (in terms of benchmark) but I bet I could use it more productively than an iPad or any other tablets out there. If it weren't for that ridiculous pricing, I would've bought one (and I was actually slightly sad since it was announced around 1 month after I bought Tab Pro 10.1).

  • +1

Wasn't the 64GB as low as $619 months ago?

    • yes, and i regret missing it, brought a 16gb now :(

      • I expected a better deal now that it should be on clearance price after new iPad announcements a few days ago.

  • Why does MacRumors say "Don't Buy" but also says " An updated iPad Air 3 is expected in the fall of 2016." Is'nt that a while away?

    http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iPad

  • Thanks OP. Bought one despite MacRumors saying "Don't Buy" as apparently the next one isn't due until fall 2016 (when is that?) and it seems to be the best deal on iPads for the foreseeable future.

  • If you are buying for an Xmas gift then Layby at Target if it is similar pricing to Officeworks. Then you pay off over 3 months. If the new one comes out and the prices drop, you can refund your layby.

  • Will OfficeWorks price beat 5% The Good Guys even if the TGG have no stock?

  • +1

I pulled the trigger and bought the 64GB model for my younger kid as it is apparently required for her school next year (either Air or Air 2 model). Unlikely discounted prices around Christmas time to be lower than this price. Thanks for posting the bargain.

  • good price

  • Not a great price, but beating the price increase saved me over $150, thanks OP.

  • Refurbed units have now gone up $60 each as well!

    • +1

My mistake. No they haven't gone up. I just purchased the iPad 2 64GB for $629.

  • If anyone is still after a 64GB iPad Air 2, I just purchased the DickSmith cards from Coles with the extra 10% added (so $100 gets a $110 card) and used these cards to get an iPad Air 2 at DickSmith. Their price at the moment is $698 but you may be able to get them to price match OfficeWorks.

    • Still happy with my refurbished 64GB for $629. Apple do the best refurbed out of anyone. As new.

  • If anyone here is a school / University student you can get this ipad for 560$ - http://www.dicksmith.com.au/ipad-air-2-wi-fi-64gb-silver-dsa… - http://www.officeworks.com.au/campaigns/school-list-upload-service?cm_sp=Homepage--Panel--SLS - if the ipad is in your school list as is mine you can price match dicksmith and receive a further 20% off
