iPhone 6S / 6S Plus Discussion. AU Pricing Starting from $1,079 / $1,229

Apple's new phone is out. What do you think?

  • 3D Touch that gives you a different response when you press hard.
  • 12MP camera / 4K video
  • A9 SoC that has 70% faster CPU & 90% faster GPU
  • iOS 9

Doesn't seem to be a big upgrade from iPhone 6/6 Plus. Pricing here. Pretty expensive possibly due to (1) it's an Apple (2) crap AUD.

Storage iPhone 6S iPhone 6S Plus
16GB $1,079 $1,229
64GB $1,229 $1,379
128GB $1,379 $1,529

Comments

  • Well even with the AUD low the current conversion is Iphone 6S 16GB - $649 USD = $916 AUD - Yet Iphone 6S 16GB is $1229 AUD in AUS - Would be worth importing. Save over $300

    • +4

Sorry, but you don't know what you are talking about.

iPhone 6S 16GB is 1079 AUD and not 1229 AUD in Australia.

You also forgot GST to the price you have calculated: 649/0.7*1.1 = 1020 AUD. Yes, there is a difference of 60 AUD, but not 300 AUD.

  • Sheesh, they still have 16GB models.

  • Compared to Singapore, the price is a little bit vary, some are cheaper some are more expensive compared to us

In Singapore, the iPhone 6s price starts at SGD 1048 for the 16GB variant, SGD 1218 for 64GB, and SGD 1388 for the 128GB variant. The iPhone 6s Plus price starts at SGD 1218 for the 16GB variant, SGD 1388 for 64GB, and 1558 for the 128GB variant.

  • +15

@kamkam, I'm with you. I can't digest paying over $1,000 for a phone, so I might get a cheapo Android handset for $300ish, spend a miniscule part of the difference on rebuilding an ecosystem of apps I use on a regular basis and retraining my brain to navigate the new OS. It's been fun, Apple but it's time to move on.

    • +2

If more people did what you are doing, then Apple would need to readjust. Unfortunately it seems most aren't willing to change and willing to absorb ridiculous prices.

      • +1

correct, it seems the masses of sheep are willing to hand over just about any dollar value apple say their product is worth, not stopping to actually consider that, damn, im paying a shitload of money for something thats not worth that much!

        • +10

I wouldn't call Apple users 'sheep' just because you disagree with them.

Apple does do one thing very well, and far better than other phone brands: security and software upgrades for the OS to the latest version, even for very old phones. You can run the latest OS on an iPhone 4 from 2010. How many Android phones can boast that, out of the box with automatic updates?

This year I switched from Apple to Android simply because of the cost involved in buying Apple hardware. Will see how long my phone is supported before either the manufacturer or Google cease support.

        • -1

          @Cluster:

          Just use cyanogenmod.

        • +1

@Cluster:Is the security you are referring to their walled-garden App Store and operating system which prevents any major system changes that Apple does not agree with?
Also it doesn't matter whether your phone remains supported or not. It will still be able to run most of the apps on Play store and those apps can give you the functionality of any new major system updates.
Most people might think that iOS updates bring new and better features but in reality Apple is just restoring some of the functions of your phone that they have restricted before.

        • +3

          @Cluster:

You cannot run latest iOS on iPhone 4.

        • +1

@Cluster: Which Android phone did you buy? If you want quick updates on old hardware, get a Nexus.

        • @Cluster: I have an iPhone 4 still and that definitely isn't running anything pass iOS 7.

    • The thing is that it doesn't even need to be a cheapo. For around $300 there are some really great models coming out of China these days. I certainly won't ever go back to Apple.

      • +2

Yep, you're dead right. I probably didn't articulate it quite right. When I referred to cheapo, I was thinking price more than quality. You're absolutely right that in the Android world, $300 buys a good amount of capability. It doesn't rival an iPhone 6 but it's definitely not a quarter of an iPhone 6 in capabilities. And in truth, probably more than I'll ever need. I'm definitely not a power user. A decent display, smooth UI, bluetooth 4 and enough memory to store my apps and media and I'm set. I was waiting to see what Apple would announce with the new phones and as I started reading this thread, I had a spontaneous brain snap and realised they'd lost me. Too much cash for too little value. I'm going phone shopping tomorrow and it's Android phones all the way.

        • You know which one really grabbed me by the eyeballs? The ZUK Z1. Its battery is like 4000mah!! Its price is about AU$400 though, which is a little higher than you were talking about.

    • How much does your appstore purchases add up to? Because that's what locks most people in, but if the total is a few hundred dollars, you'll save that much after switching, and then it's continued savings every year on. That is assuming your purchases are the only thing holding you back. For those people, they are paying more each year for a new phone just to not 'waste' the comparitively smaller amount they've spent on apps.

    • I'm writing this on my new Samsung Galaxy Note 4. I talked myself into spending the extra cash when i saw the glorious screen and the speedy navigation. In true OzB fashion, got it for $697 at DJs using eGift cards I bought for $640. We were heading OS and used TRS so final cost was $580. It's every bit as good as an iPhone 6 plus for less than half the price. I've spent about $20 on apps and I'm almost there. Just need a good app to replace BizXpenseTracker and I'm set. Apple has lost another loyal customer. I'm liking the configurability of Android. The widgets rock!

      • Do you use multi window and pen?

        • I've been using the pen a bit. Tried the google handwriting recognition app and it's really impressive. I had a few Palm Pilots so like the handwriting idea. I even plan to try some of the Palm Graffitti apps too. I haven't got my head around multi window yet. I plan to play around with it in the near future. To be honest, i tend to be a single window kinda guy even in Win10 or MacOS so not convinced it'll push my buttons.

  • My Samsung Galaxy S3 died a month ago after 3 years as my main phone. My main concern now is a phone with excellent customer service AFTER warranty. Apple seems the only one who provides this level of service.
    I would choose Iphone 6s 128gb now instead of Nexus 5x 2015.
Am i on the right track?

    • +9

I've been with android for my last four phones but I've had issues with three of them. The wife received her S6 edge and it's having issues with it's speaker mode. Because she has had it for a couple of weeks it has to be sent away and we were quoted 4-6 weeks.

I remember back when she had the iPhone 3G (I think that was it, about 6 years ago) and it had a problem. Took it into the store in Sydney and walked out with a brand new phone in 20 minutes.

I am looking at getting a new iPhone just cause I'm over having to wait so long for repairs with samsung. They cost the same as each other and customer service is worth a lot to me.

      • -2

these days Apple brought in a lot of foreign technicians in their stores to have your Apple products fixed on site if possible, it's harder to get replacement/refurbished product like it used to be

    • +2

I had good customer service dealing with telstra on my htc one m7. I bought it secondhand, and I had the dreaded purple haze issue on the camera, took it in they got me a brand new replacement within a couple of days. I'd buy outright from telstra store after that experience if I was looking for excellent customer service. I had issues with an iPod out of the box years ago and had to have it sent off to be repair, really turned me off Apple after that. I believe they are better with the iPhone, but still you buy a new faulty product you shouldn't have to wait for weeks for them to fix it. Google give you 15 days where you can try it and return it for refund if you like, I know Apple offer 14 days on their phone's.

That's the thing they don't cost the same, if you were to buy nexus you'll only be paying around 50% the cost of the iPhone.

      • You're right. I shouldn't have made such a broad comparison. I was only thinking of the S6 Edge. I looked up the nexus after fickre mentioned it, looks like it might be worth it from just the price alone.

I'll need to head into the store and play with one.

        • I have a bad experience with nexus 5 from Google. 3 replacement sent and all not working for different reasons.

I don't like that Google doesn't pay GST, or the invoice don't show GST.

I will stay away from it now on,.

I have reserved a iPhone 6s, but I am still thinking about it, too much money for a phone.

        • @ozhunter:

I know, that changed. They don't anymore.

    • Out of interest how did it die? My dad's S3 micro usb port broke so it couldn't be charged, but to be fair smart phones seem to really only have a life of 3 years before some kind of major fault.

I've gone with the Nexus devices, my last and current being the nexus 4 which was so cheap that it doesn't even matter if it has worse out of warranty support as if it dies it's generally a good time to upgrade and worked out cheaper than buying the premium models.

  • I'm sick of these sudden huge price increases when a new product is released. One such example happened at the beginning of this year when the fitbit Charge HR and Surge were released, they were i think $20 or $30 more than they were initially advertised for. I'm not saying it's the wrong thing to do, I mean i get it these places need to make money, but you won't ever see prices go down on electronics when the exchange rate fluctuates the other way with the AUD being worth more

  • $99 USD for a stylus that needs to be recharged!!!

    Need I say more..

    • Depends how often. But yes. Why should u need a stylus to carry a charge unless it offered something so great as a trade of. And hopefully a charge last years.

      • +2

Plus $99 for a frigging stylus

        • The Wacom Bamboo Stylus feel is about the same price…

        • +1

@antler: It's $55 from JB Hi Fi, cheaper at other vendors. I am currently using http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Digitizer-STYLUS-PEN-for-Thin…, which costed me around $11 USD. The $11 USD one has a button for right clicking, rubber function on back and came with 5 replacement tips.

Bamboo stylus does feel nicer to write with its soft tip though. That said, I think that's overpriced. Wacom is known for making things overpriced because they don't have much competition in what they do, so yeah.

  • +2

Way too much just to get a phone that dosnt bend as much and new hardware which is unnecessary since even my 5s runs perfectly well!

I'll wait for the 7 to come out with atleast a 1080p screen and better battery plus be cheaper if the AU$ gets stronger.

    Force touch. Pft

The iPad pro on the other hand would appeal to me.

  • I thought the midnight lineup outside Apple stores these days were mainly strippers and reps for online gaming websites looking to get noticed.

Anyway I'm waiting for the iPhone 27. That one is going to be awesome.

  • +1

I'd neg it for being so, so far from a bargain.

  • +1

What I found really annoying was the fact that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus hasn't dropped much in price. Guess it's eBay/Gumtree shopping for second hand!

  • I'll stick to Xperia Z2 / HTC one M8

4k / 1440p just sound foolish in small device. I'm content with 1080p, save battery life

  • -6

When your main gripe with a product is its price alone, you should get better paying job. Its that simple.

  • 6S will sell like hot cakes mainly due to (1) most of the 5S users will want to upgrade to 6S/6S Plus (2) clever marketing decisions (held back 12MP camera / 4K on iPhone 6) so more features for 6S and (3) the current gen of Android CPUs are not impressive enough.

However, Apple have pretty much unleashed all the previously held back features. What can they do for iPhone 7/7 Plus? Higher res screen?

I hope next gen Android CPUs will be more competitive and Google will make Android M runs smoother on devices than Android Lollipop.

    • +1

You'll think that SoC that Android phone uses should already be competitive, as you have multiple vendors competing in the same space — Qualcomm, nVidia, Intel, and many Chinese/Taiwanese chip makers. However optimising your software/operating system for all these hardware combinations is still a challenge, and something Apple has advantage of.

    • The numbers have always had a display increase since the 4. 3 and 4 had a 3.5", 5 had a 4" and 6 had a 4.7" with 6+ having a 5.5".

7 won't just be a spec bump with a new feature like the s models. 4s had Siri, 5s had fingerprint reader and 6s has 3d touch.

I am hoping Apple brings some more innovation to the next model, I don't feel the need to upgrade to the 6s since I have the 6.

  • +3

    Optus 6S plans

    $73/month for 16G 6S
    $79/month for 16G 6S Plus

    http://offer.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/phones/iphone/iphone-6…

  • Bought a washing machine from the last eBay sales for $1300 which will last me a lot longer than the phones coming out today.

Used to get flagships all the time but now 400-500 max will do me. LG G3 at the moment and its doing plenty.

The prices are going crazy. Sure they can do plenty but for the money there are better things to buy.

  • Hate iphone when looking at its price.

  • Must be very popular. Apple.com is down at the moment — due to overwhelming preorder demand?

    • Back up.

  • +1

Just FYI, Apple in the U.S. Has started a scheme where you BYO sim and have the latest iPhone for life (insured for damage too with AppleCare) for $35 a month. They are planning on international roll out of the same scheme, that and an amayasim would be a bargain even at $50 a month.

    • -1

I think the USD $35/m is in addition to the contract price. Doesn't seem worth it. It'd be better to buy the phone and resell it later on.

      • Yeah it is, seems very cheap to me. I dropped my 6 plus, even though they gave me new phone feeling at Telstra, it's useless to me, as the case us some slight dents in it. Who Apple care you are covered for that. I've seen the outrageous prices on 6S contracts, $125 a month on Telstra is nuts.

        • +1

          http://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program

A 16GB iphone 6s plus costs USD $36.58(approx $47.50 here) for the trade in program which goes for two years or 1 year if you trade in your current iphone.

          Option 1 - 2 years on a $47.50 monthly plan = $1140(47.5*24)
          Option 2 - 1 year on a $47.50 plan + current iphone

You're really just buying another iphone with the payments spread out over 2 years. The second option does have the convenience of just really leasing an iphone from Apple. Similar to cars and video games, trading it in does make it more convenient but you can get more by selling privately.

        • @ozhunter:

Yeah, as long as you don't break it, that's my point. With the apple plan it's covered. Seems like a bargain.

        • @thorton82:

My point is, that it really isn't a bargain at all. You are just buying another phone on another contract.

        • +1

@ozhunter: But its covered by insurance, which it wouldn't be on a contract without paying more, hence a bargain. Its all just shooting the shit till Apple release Australian prices on this anyway.

        • -1

@thorton82: Wouldn't you be better off buying an iPhone and selling it at 1 year mark? iPhones hold their value really well, so I'd assume that you'd be better off selling your old phone and getting a new one?

        • @Oversimplified:

Yes it would be, but the separate trade in program does include Applecare and is more convenient which is a plus. Downside is once you start in the trade in program, I doubt you can get a refund even if you change your mind a few months in about getting the next iphone.

        • @ozhunter: I wonder how they'd do it in Australia (well other places in general to be exact), with the volatile currency exchange rate. You'd gain or lose profit in USD depending on the exchange rate.

  • -1

People getting it are plain crazy.

    • +1

iPhones generally have better resale than their Android counterparts so in a way it's a better investment than buying an Android flagship like the s6, One m9.

It comes down to personal preference at the end of the day and the Apple operating system is what a large amount of consumers want as it's easy to use, works well every time and is what their friends generally have. The iMessage app for example used to be so handy when plans didn't come with unlimited text.

      • -1

        it's easy to use

What's so hard about using an android phone?

        works well every time

So do a lot of android phones

        what their friends generally have.

This is likely one of the biggest reasons.

The iMessage app for example used to be so handy when plans didn't come with unlimited text.

Pretty much a useless reason to buy it now. Most, if not all iphone users would know someone that doesn't have an iphone and would end up using whatsapp, facebook messenger, telegram etc.

      • +2

Better resale value? Not really. Apple iPhones cost more so their second hand ones tend to cost more. However, if you look at it from the actual amount of value lost, the iPhones do drop rapidly in value after a few years too (maybe more so than Android phones).

I purchased my iPhone 4 for around $950, and sold it on feeBay for $250 after a few years. Some Android phones had good resale value (e.g. Acer Liquid Metal MT (can't remember the model now), I only lost about $30 after 2 years).

Following OZB, you can get good deals on Android phones. LG G2 or LG G3 @ around $400 or Moto G @ less than $200. Even if they dropped 50% of the values, still a pretty good deal.

  • +3

Apple…. still the name on everybody's lips. seems they must be doing something right if you all can't stop talking about it

    • +7

Don't forgot that eople can't stop talking about Tony Abbott or Kim Kardashian either ;)

      • That's Mr Abbott to you!

  • $1000 for a phone is just way too much whether that be an iPhone or a Samsung. Why would you want to pay the price of a decent laptop for a phone. Apple used to be all about innovation and it did help early android devices get to where they are now. The so called changes that they have made in the phone are not really that innovative and charging a higher price for all these changes is just immoral. As a brand Apple should really think about their customers when deciding on the price before thing about themselves. But I have to give it to their marketing team because no matter how expensive they make the device thousands of people will still buy it everyday because of how the product is marketed.

    • There's only so much innovation you can do until you've done everything.

What more are you expecting, honestly?

    • -1

I view iPhone as a portable computer with cellular phone functions.
That's value to a lot of people who cannot afford a phone and a separate computer.

      • +2

IPhone is good value that can't afford a computer and a phone?

That's really weird logic my friend. Tell us, how much does the current iPhone cost, and does it have functions of a typical pc?

The iPhone is not a replacement for a computer, never will be given how you interact with it and the limited software ecosystem it runs. Most people will still need both a phone and a pc.

  • Is there any cashback if I pre order from the Apple website? Cashrewards & Cashback Club no longer include Apple.

  • That's about the price I was expecting. Though it's still disappointing that the base model is only 16GB in 2015.

  • +2

I really don't get the complaints about price increases. This is what you get for living in a country that manufactures nothing that the consumer world values which in turn has a moderate effect on the local currency. Not to mention, as a publicly listed company with shareholders, the expectation is that Apple is supposed to continuously increase revenue and profits year on year. It's how you achieve wealth for investors.

    • +1

      Steel and minerals.

  • I'm still contend with my iPhone 6 Plus, no reason for me to upgrade this time. And yes, definitely Apple demand a high price tag but it just works like everyone has agreed.

  • +1

I remember the exact thing happened when the iPhone 5S came out. People mocked it guess what? 12 months later, the company's market cap /share price increased 20% and Apple hit another sales record with the 5S. I don't support or hate Apple, just reporting on what happens with these keynotes. e.g. Keynote -> People underwhelmed -> Apple breaks sales record -> repeat.

  • It just proved that how good the big corporate brainwashed the majority consumers out there! Spend big to "feel" good, regardless of the quality, all you need is "feel good" about it..and Iphone is definitely one of those prodcuts

    • +1

i certainly don't 'feel good' when it's a royal pain in the ass to do basic tasks like sync music with itunes, use google maps (yes it was a pain even on android), find my iphone when/if it gets stolen/misplaced, navigate through 100 menus to perform a basic task, and find a decent app through the piles of SPAM.

you pay a premium for the ecosystem, and user experience. android (and other minor operating systems) blow in both regards.

  • Is anyone selling outright the Iphone 6S at a cheaper price?

    • dick smith, gift cards at coles bonus 10% + 10% off apple + TRS.

      • Will you guys consider the extended warranty insurance that comes with credit cards?
Usually an excess will apply and the claim process could be complicated

        • no, i won't.

  • Don't necessarily blame apple. Blame the SHITE Australian dollar. I can't imagine getting the new Nexus 5 for $400 like you could 2 years ago.

  • +4

No clue how everyone and their mother can afford an iPhone.

  • Has anyone considered the oneplus 2? or a chinese branded phone such as huawei etc
They are less pricey than the flagship phones
Not an apple hater but the price of apple phones are a bit too much being 1.2k - 1.5k
I bought a oneplus 2 recently for about $700 including tempered glass and case, works quite well
hoping it will last 2 years or just a bit more. Have a friend who has the oneplus 1, which has quite
    impressive tech specs.

    Prior phones
    nokia 1520 - wouldn't recommend it
samsung galaxy s3 - was one of my fav
sony xperia arc - was laggy
apple iphone 3g - was nice but itunes for everything…

anyone who wants to know more, hope this helps:
gsmarena - for tech specs on most current and upcoming phones
oppomart and gearbest has the oneplus 2 for sale or alternatively use the official site.

    • Oneplus 2 for $700? Nope nope nope… I'd only pay ~$500 for it. (And it's Chinese too btw, seeing as you seemed to have separated OnePlus with Huawei, they're actually from the same place)

  • I've got myself a reservation with the Apple Store on Friday at 830am. Will be picking up an iPhone 6S Silver 64GB :D But, I might just let it go. My iPhone 6 is treating me well so far.

  • Seen this article so went to Vodafone to check on it, and they Said No to me.
Anyone else know anything about this?

    " If you’re interested in this, a 16GB iPhone 6s starts at $30 over a 30 month period, and is priced up to $180 a month over a 6 month period. "

    Source: http://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/cheapest-and-best-…

    • Yeah I've been keeping a look out for this as well, after reading the same article.

  • -3

ROFL Apple. Thing is its too locked down. Way too locked down. I'm not talking rooting either. You are stuck with Apple's ecosystem and Itunes. You can't change. And I could never stand having a product that is essentially a wanky fashion accessory for hipsters. Then of course you have the $1200+ price which is hilarious. A Moto X Style is just under $800 outright, the Play is just over $500, and the Moto G v3 is under $400. All three are viable basic alternatives that are not filled with bloat (unlike Samsung). I wouldn't throw money at a random Chinaphone.

    • what if i happen to like apple's ecosystem and itunes?

      • -3

BAA BAA BAA BAA BAA BAA BAA BAA BAA BAA BAA BAA

        • i take it your dole payments can't stretch for an iphone then.
