Should I Buy The Car? What Do You Guys Think? I Want to Hear from Other People's Perspective

Hi all,

I am having a dilemma right now. I am really interested on this Subaru WRX 2004 model(AUTO). It has done 154kms on it for around 10K.

Driving a RX Subaru(108kms/AUTO). I really like the WRX rumbling engine sound and here is where I want to hear from other people's perspective.

  • Should I sell my current car and get the WRX?
  • Is it a wise thing to do ?
  • Or should I just forget about it and keep saving money…?
  • Look at other car's options. Volkswagen GTi, Mazda MX-5, something classy or gentlemen just something well present. (I do at some point want to get a luxury car)

I haven't checked the insurance.. I know It would cost maybe 2x as much because I'm under 25 and driving a performance car would is a risk.

I am not planning to do any modding to the car. But probably just the headlights, other than that. Nothing else. Please don't hate on me for picking
an AUTO and not manual. I am aware of those jet lag when you are full throttle and it takes few second to think. Just for me, I like it. I don't have to
switch gears and I get plenty of power too.

I appreciate your time and getting back to me!

I really like the WRX rumbling engine sound

With tastes like that you arent really a (oz)bargain hunter are you?

    • Unfair matey.

It's been well known for 20+ years that Subaru gave the world near-supercar performance for beer money.
The current model continues the tradition:

Top Gear UK mag agrees. Haven't bothered looking any further as it's not something I'd consider personally. Not the VFM equation — that's undeniable, but boxers are trickier to work on for a home wrencher.

And on that basis, I'd say to OP save your money. Unless you can afford ~$70/hr for mechanical work + parts.

My god some people here have to learn to be less sensitive.

The meaning of the post was that if your criteria for buying a car is the sound then the price isnt the motivating decision point.

So asking bargainers for their opinion isnt really the right place.

The irony is that this is exactly what most advisors here have been saying

Guess my point was a little to subtle for those who need bricks.

Wasn't meant to be "unfair" just calling it like it now is. :)

        • With tastes like that

So? You singled out the sound issue. You might like Brahms, but I like Psycroptic.
Does that make me a non (Oz)bargain hunter too?

Aside from which, OP also included (regarding an auto)

I don't have to switch gears and I get plenty of power too.

So from that, I determined they want a reasonably quick auto and like the distinctive boxer sound.
          The hide. I hope they're banned :p

        • @mcmonte:

So? You singled out the sound issue

ok next time I'll rate each issue and give it a weighting

Its just a comment, sorry to offend so many rev heads.

I'll MUFFLE my comments on WRX's in the future LOL

      • I am going to save my money. I read and see other people's perspective. I don't even get 70/hr I get more like.. 20/hr lol

Personally I would steer clear, those cars get thrashed, 11 years of flogging and 154,000km…. I'd rather spend a little more and get something 2-3 years old, you will enjoy it more, last you longer and will save you down the track when the 11 year old car starts falling apart.

    • What you say is true, I agree.. I guess I shouldn't follow the trend where they don't worry about the KMS and make the car healthy(Which could spend a lot more money).
I also posted to another person that I might just save up more and get a nicer WRX perhaps that's a better options too. Thank you very much buddy !

Change the exhaust on your current car you will get same sound.

    • +1

Punch a screwdriver through your current muffler a few times, you will get the same sound.

Oh, and dont forget to check under the bonut things when purchasing a new car

      • Yeah, 11yo WRX, the bonut could be the least of their worries.

    • Yeh, that's one way. I did a test drive on the WRX. It was so fast and responsive. Either that or I guess I just save up $40k for a WRX newer model later.
I will keep in mind your suggestion thought. Thank you!!

  • Save your money, and your life, and get something sensible.

      Umm save your judgement maybe?

The title says the OP wants to hear from other people's perspective.

        • Having lost a brother in a motorbike accident I think I have more insight than most as to why people should minimise their risks. Look at the statistics on young people and high performance cars; the picture isn't pretty. Thank-you to PJC.

        • @try2bhelpful:

Hey I know I may look like those people "young people + High performance cars" = almost causing troubles. I say I am not going to be like drag race or anything. I don't really want the attention. But I like those self-respect. But I totally get you.

  • If you like the boxer sound but want a luxury car in future, why not get a 2007-2009 Liberty GT Spec B?

    • I had a look at them too. I see where you're coming from. The interior is really nice luxury feel. I guess for now I just really like the Impreza look. Makes me feel like part of a subaru crew when I see another subaru on the road. Silly thinking, I will have a look at your suggestion too! :)

    Auto WRX? LOL

    • +1

Yeah. I know, It is silly to get an AUTO performance car. Like I said before, I don't want to change gears and still get power. :)

      • Its particularly silly to get a WRX auto, those gearboxes were shit house (actually, so was the manual). From my recollection, the auto was something like 1.5 seconds slower than the manual to 100kmh.

        • Yeah. I can look away that 1.5 seconds. IT is just those thoughts in our head if you don't buy it now. Once it is gone. IT is GONE, you might regrets it. That's all. But I'm looking at the Subaru liberty now.

@SourCream3000: What you have said makes no sense.

        • @thorton82:

Sorry, I mean from what you said "the auto was something like 1.5 seconds slower than the manual to 100kmh." I don't mind it takes 1.5 sec to get to 100kmh.

Right now. It is just the model I like on sale. I am scared that if I don't act quick. I might not get the car(someone else bought it).
I am having a look at the Subaru Liberty right now. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Subaru-Liberty-20… Looks nice actually.

  • I think that you should stick with your current car. It is not worth the extra $ you will have to pay in insurance. Wait till you are 25 and not hit hard by insurance companies.

    • Thanks [what] I am a bit sad that…I wouldn't get to own one WRX blobeye. But I guess maybe it is for the best. Someone told me about the Subaru liberty GT. I am looking at it now. Personality I like hatch back. I take my current car on road trips and camp in the car. The Wagon looks.. not so classy. But Sedan looks really luxury

  • You could look at something like a renault megane rs. Mazda mps are fast in a straight line. Xr5 turbo not quite as fast but corner better. Mitsubishi lancer evo. Audi s3. There arepleanty of options around.

    • I actually like the Audi s3. But holy.. They are all almost out of my budget. Which I guess I will just save up my money. I did like the Xr5 Turbo before :)

  • +1

Auto + sport exhaust = lame.

  • check the insurance, its expensive.

you arent planning on modding the car, but you will.

pick a manual, dont be one of those people that post later down the road saying how much an auto to manual conversion is. just stop it.

    • Yes, I know my insurance is going to cost me probably double or triple more than the car itself.
I already told people that try not to hate on me picking an auto. I hope people see it.

      • its not hate, not at all. ive been in the wrx community for a decent amount of time now, and see people constantly make this call (i wont say mistake). they develop a sentimental attachment to the car since its their first, but want a manual. then fork out big amounts of money for changing the box.

not hate, maybe a face palm

Before you go too far, do a check at https://www.ppsr.gov.au/additional-search-results-informatio…

My son has gone through the Honda Integra stage, and now has the desire to buy a WRX. He can't afford anything newer and is looking at similiar age and Km's to what you are. The two cars he has been really serious about have both been shown to be repairable write offs by just doing the $4 PPSR check.

WRX + Boy racer + multiple owners = guaranteed problems.

    • Thanks for the site. It would definitely help me for my next car(When I do decide to get one)

I only go for that one, because I really like that model "blobeye". I did have a look at the car, everything seems clean and fine with it. I like those street credit (Silly…I know I should probably grow up) So I am looking at the Subaru liberty GT. At the same time.. Maybe it is best that I should save my money. Like almost every other post on the forum. I really appreciate this!
