As we all know generic lightning cables are hit and miss. However I have found that the ones I have got from MSY and Kogan seem to work if they initially worked from the beginning.

If they're the same ones I get from eBay, sometimes they initially work and have a performance half life of 2 weeks
Mine doesn't always charge the iPhone 6, sometimes I wake up in the morning and it says it's still charging but with 50%. Plug into the laptop and it connects and disconnects rapidly. Now willing to pay more for something that actually works long term.

Can get the ones from eBay for ~$1 too

    • Have you cleaned the lint out of your lightning port?

      • Yeah, I had similar problems, and a blast of compressed air seemed to do the trick. It does occasionally heat up while charging but I think that's a separate problem, probably due to an app (I suspect the pebble app).

      • +4

My iPhone is less than 7 weeks old and i keep it immaculate. You could lick the Lightning port - that's how clean it is.

I second the guy's comments below, if it's not MFi it's no deal.

The cheapest MFi cable you can buy from eBay is around ~$4

        http://m.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?isRefine=true&_pgn=1&_nkw=Mf…

I bought one of these (in green because it was either green or pink). Can confirm it works fine. Smells plasticky, feels cheap, but hasn't given me issues yet

This is a good example of 'just because you can doesnt mean you should.'

        • @ATangk: just saying hahah

        • +1

Good find on Ebay. Just picked one up. Got the Kogan deal for 3 for $15 (2m) so have ample good cables. The non mfi cables are a waste of space.

    • Clean the connectors at the tip, they go black and stop working, also when disconnecting, dont pull from the cable.

  • +12

If a cable is not truly MFi certified. It is not worth buying no matter the price.

    • made the same comment about $2 "iphone" headphones deals…. not even worht 1 cent

  • +1

I find the biggest problem with cheap lighting cables is the connectors corroding.

  • Length?

    • +3

      Yea Big.

    • I assume it is 1m, same as the others I have, but as it is not listed in the Ad or on the website I have omitted it from my post

  • +3

Never buy generic cables as they are cables that fail the Quality Assurance test. They tend to have very short life span and poses a safety hazard.

    • +2

      Also according to http://www.juicies.com/blogs/news/14894965-what-happens-when…

It has the potential to damage a chip in the phone.

I don't know the truth of this claim but if it is even true of 1% of the population, why risk your $700+ phone with a <$6 cable? You don't buy 3rd party insurance for your brand new car right?

      • +2

I think its true, because bad cable or chargers can literally blow up. As long it has proper QA and a decent brand it should be ok. Well my key motto "Buy semi expensive cables on special".

        • Literally blow up???

Literally? “You Keep Using That Word, I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means”

It is not inconceivable (see what I've done there?) that a charger may 'blow up', but probably not as in 'Michael Bay blow up'. But a cable? Spark, fuse, even melt - perhaps. But blow up?

I guess, if the cable was cordite-infused… hmmm… yes, back to Michael Bay territory.

I love a bargain but it doesn't make sense to spend under $1 for charging cables for such an expensive piece of tech!!!!

    • +6

There's no relation between the price of a purchase and the price of a cable. However, I fully agree non MFi cables are a waste of money and time.

There's nothing wrong with $3 HDMI cables on a $3000 TV.

      • $3 HDMI cables are not known to fry the side of your head or blow up your phone as there is no charging involved.

When it comes to electrical charging a gadget of value - price is VERY relative!

        • +5

There's minimal protection in the cable itself whether genuine or not, the issue is with the charger that plugs in to your AC 240v wall outlet.

If the charger is doing it's job, then it will be fine regardless of cable. Non Mfi cables are an annoyance and waste of money, not a safety hazzard.

        • @cyssero:

Why defend cheaply made cabling? Why spend $1 when you can spend $4 for peace of mind to use with your $1000 phone :)

        • @MrMaxwell: You'd fool yourself to believe that $4 cable is better than $1 cable without any proof. Price is VERY relative and this cable is normally $4

        • +1

@cyssero: I don't agree with that. I have had a melted cable on my phone whilst charging over night in flight mode. Switched to a Kogan MFI cable and have not had an issue with the same charger.

        • @legelas: Which sounds like even less of a Deal. $4 for a non-MFi certified? Check the link I provided

    • +3

I wouldn't buy generic brand cables though. Its not a sin to buy cable around $10-20 dollar if they are quality as they are more durable but needs to be on special though (also depends of length too).

This is only a deal because Apple's official cables are absolutely terrible.

    • just wait until owned one of these..

  • Where can I get a short, magnetic lightning cable ,for use with a powerbank, which is good quality? Ebay ones are junk am I safe to assume?

  • Guys what you say about these cables? are they really genuine as they claim?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121669079587?ssPageName=STRK%3AME…

    • Seem genuine enough. Pay pal protection.

      • And 3742 people seems to thing think they are genuine as well.

      • paypal doesnt cover your power chip inside your phone if it gets fried

        • +1

That's extreme. Ive used plenty of different cables most non genuine in my iPhone 6 including the dodge ones sold at MSY under this post and this has never happened.

        • @Gavman: That is true, I also use non genuine cables but are MFi. I have used non genuine non mfi cables from eBay too and it gave me issues. Question is who is to blame if it does damage your phone?

        • That's the thing.. whos to say that you used a dodgy cable 'if' your phone frys. A genuine Apple cable can purchased from an apple store is not immune from faults. Apple would be hard pressed not to honour statutory warrantee since they couldn't absolutely guarantee it wasn't a fault caused by Genuine product. All this is in perspective of a 0.01% of your phone frying in the first place!

What? Now Chrysler makes iPhone cables?

          come again?! 8|

        • @A3Australia: i see what you did there ;)

    • Reading the feedback some people say it doesn't work on there phone and it's fake so I wouldn't risk it

      • over 1000 positive vs 4 negative (1 claiming this product isn't genuine) in the past month. Bare in mind its not uncommon for people to provide negative feedback to get a refund regardless of what they actually received. over a $13 sale its not worth the fight. Most ppl are honest!

        • That doesn't make sense. $13 for 3 genuine cables would be a bargain for sure. Please also read the neutral feedback. Some people who received refunds elected to provide neutral feedback. However, some of them did raise a concern that the seller continued to list them as genuine, even though they are not.

        • Well in that case - apply for a refund and then you get 3 dodge cables for FREE!. why spend $1 for 1 haha

        • BTW Got my cables today. See genuine to me.. no problem at all. Compare it top to bottom at they check out.

        • @Gavman:

BTW Got my cables today. See (sic) genuine to me.. no problem at all. Compare it top to bottom at (sic) they check out.

Please take one cable to an Apple store. Let us know what they say about it being a genuine Apple Cable.

        • meh for $4.50 a cable they are a
Perfect replacement when I sell my iPhone. If it's a fake it's damn good one. U cannot point out one difference.

    • maybe better quality, but would doubt genuine apple.

    • +1

Don't be so gullible. One genuine cable for $13.69 would be a bargain already. 3 of them for $13.69? That pretty much tells you they are not genuine.
Don't just read the positive feedback. Read the neutral and negative ones.

You will be wasting your money buying some fake cables.

    • +1

      Expensive fakes.

  • The cables are the poorest of quality - thin wire less than a mm thick. Get what u pay for really. Apple cable is strong and comes with 12 month warrantee. I've bought these before from MSY and they tend to work for about 1-2 months and just die and end up in the bin!

  • I guess there is only way to risk $13 and when receive them cut 1 open if its all what they saying specially woven wire cloth than they seems pretty genuine as this type of coating is quite expensive and only apple use that otherwise ask for refund from the seller for fake cables.

    • +1

      https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204566

In the description, the seller tried to come up with an excuse saying the cables won't have imprints (i.e. no serial number). So, what you see in the photos are not what you will be getting.

At least MSY are selling ones which are just $1 each. However, I wouldn't bother with either one of them.

      • +1

The flat cable is definitely not the one in the photo . It's a misleading ads at the worst to get ozbargainers step Into the shop to buy other stuffs .

  • +1

Msy should be reported to consumer affairs for selling flat cables that only works in 1-2 weeks and with high possibilities of damaging your phone or harming users. I bought 3 cables from same promos last time and it broke within 2 weeks all of them, and it made my iphone gone on and off many times while in charging mode. It's dodgy deal…

  • +1

They should pay us to take out their garbage. Cut it up… Maybe only one strand of wire

  • +1

Guys even deal is not on, either i dont know how to get the deal or they just told us big fat lie.

    • Just wait until 10.30am until the stores open and the website will probably then be updated.

      • +2

Its 11:02 AM and still there is no deal, this proves MSY is really a dodgy seller.

        • +2

4 out of 6 items on the newsletter have updated prices.. perhaps the dude is having a smoko.

  • +1

    Still $4

  • +1

still no official reply from MSY!?

  • +1

Some body should report to consumer affairs as its clear misleading and wrong advertisement.

  • +1

Price has not updated online since yesterday. No replies to email from officials. Misleading and misguiding info

  • cable only cost $ 1 , shipping $ 10 . Is it worthed ???

  • +1

Brought three today and they all failed.

  • +1

ppl argue about $3 difference for their precious $1000 iPhone. LOL
If you care about your iPhone, you won't even consider about this kind of cable.
