Where Can I Buy Children's Books? Needs to Be New Condition. Happy to Buy in Bulk

Hi Ozbargainers!

My son is 8.5 months old and he loves reading books!
We are going to set up a bookshelf for him and fill it up with books.
My problem is that at a glance, prices are quite dear when buying single books or buying from book stores.
E-reader is out of question currently as he is only 8.5 months old. Maybe when he is 8 years old.
Also books needs to be new as my wife has mild OCD (clean and neat freak) so second hand books or the library is out of the question until my son is old enough to wash his own hands independently.

Now please help me out! I ask the collective intelligence of the ozbargain community.

Aldi (they just had them in recently - so most stores should have some stock left) and post office book packs. The post office book packs offer excellent value and are changed over on a regular basis. Good way to get your hands on a lot of the classics. Aldi is great for all sorts of children's books, you just have to catch the weeks they are on. I recently got some board books and picture books for my girls there.

Otherwise for specific books I am seeking I tend to look on the book depository. They also sell some of the classics quite cheap at times - although watch the size. Sometimes a cheap picture book is a miniature version. As an example of what I get on there - I got 'Dear Zoo' there as it was cheaper than I could find it elsewhere.

As he's quite young, you may want to focus on board books and thicker paged books for the time being (there's a great little Playschool series that Aldi often carries, the pages are heavy and hard to tear - http://offers.kd2.org/en/au/aldi/pEFd/). Just depends on your child. Neither of my kids have been destructive with books but a number of my friends have had trouble and had a lot of lovely new books destroyed, something to keep in mind when choosing what to put out.

    • Great, thanks! Going to check my local ALDI tomorrow. I think boardbooks are the way to go. Post office is a good idea too.

If you're in Melbourne here are a few options -

We've got a few books from - http://www.littlebookroom.com.au/ in particular very nice selection, a little pricey but good quality stuff.

Cheap bulk items - Costco - have a decent collection of books inc nursery tales, and my first library , ladybird etc… probably one of the cheapest ways to fill the shelves up quickly and see what you're getting for new items. Online probably find a few cheaper options.

    Good luck.

    • Yes we are in Melbourne, will look those up. Costco! awesome idea, we will head there tomorrow I think!

  • Yes, Aldi, bought a stack of 'In the night garden' books and 'Spot the dog' books few weeks ago. Post Office and sometimes Big W also good. Book depository is also great. Boardbooks are good, as little one like to rip the pages (my kids like to bite/nibble the books!) Box sets are great (cheaper), many classics come in boxes, e.g Dr.Seuss, Winnie the Pooh, Mr.Men/Little Miss…
And good on you for 'investing' in a library for you child. I always think one can have too many toys, but no one can have too many books.
