I appreciate that the first four letters of vegetable are VEGE but for some reason I always thought that it was spelt VEGIE. Guess I learnt something today.

  Considering it's not a REAL word, there's no definitive answer on this - but I agree with you, it's 'vegie'. 'Vege' to me is like 'vege out in front of the TV' (rhymes with 'edge').
