This peaty Single Malt dates back to 1816, when John Johnston and Archibald Campbell each constructed a distillery on what today is the Lagavulin site. After Johnston died, Campbell consolidated the two, before selling it to malt merchant Alexander Graham. Today it continues to uphold the traditions of its past, using meticulous preparation to create powerful whisky. Their signature 16 year old malt has a strong peat, smoke and seaweed nose that is followed by a nutty complexity and light fruitiness. In the mouth characters of Charcoal, dry woodiness and iodine followed by chilli chocolate and a hint of toffee.

brb, off to buy ALL THE TALISKER
it's that price for over a month now. I'd wait for cheaper price, planning an overseas trip, can get it $90/1L
Woolies gift cards?
For use at DM's?Yes.
Buy them from Cash Rewards or through the Entertainment Book.
That Laphroaig 10 years is a fail for me and my friends. Didn't like it at all — it kinda tastes a bit like gasoline with an earthly / dirt (after) taste. Not for us apparently so we are now back to our regular programming (JW, Chivas, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, JD and the likes).
I've heard good things about Yamazaki. Will probably give that a try next.
I'm not normally a fan of peaty scotches, and when I first tried Laphroaig 10yo, I couldn't stand it. Then I tried the Laphroaig Select Oak at the DM tasting night and I didn't mind it. Certainly not as smooth as my normal dram, but enjoyable as something a bit different. I then revisited the 10yo, and enjoyed it too. Either my taste has matured, or the scotch changed a bit after being open for several months.

Probably a mix of both.
Haven't been drinking scotch that long but I noticed over the last few years, I've acquired a taste for peaty scotches.
Have to agree.
Tasted the Laphroaig 10yo, Laphroaig PX cask and Talisker 10yo against each other less than a month ago. The Laphroaig 10yo showed poorly in this company - with a weak middle palate and a nose which had too much 'chemical' character - rather than peat/smoke. While the Laphroaig PX cask and Talisker 10yo were very different beasts, they were both much appreciated.
At less than $70, the Talisker 10yo looks to be a very decent buy!
[Our other favourites: Highland Park 12yo and Aberlour a'bunadh]
I keep hearing positive things about the A'bunadh. I love my Highland Park 21 (my favorite, along with Singleton Liberte), although I hear the 18 is better. I have an Aberlour 12 that I'm yet to open.
@puffinfresh: I'd like to try some of the more $$$ Highland Park variants… but the Highland Park 12yo is an excellent drop to offer guests who might find some of the other Islay malts too assertive.
The Aberlour a'bunadh is pretty wonderful - but I've heard niggling things about batch variability (it is marked on the bottle/canister). It can cope with a splash of water - but I don't tend to bother as it is pretty mellow despite the cask strength bottling.
It's actually pretty common to see this for $80. It's that price every other month pretty much at 1st Choice or Dan's. It is a very good scotch though, easily outclassing most at that price point.
If you see if for anything less than $80 you have yourself a real bargain.
$79.95!
Oh no. Single malt overload this month. There are already 4 bottles in the drinks cabinet. Must enjoy responsibly.
…later that day at EarlyBird's house: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKB9sYVqQzE
Wow, spoilt for choice. My cabinet only holds a third of that.
Whaaaat! Where do I get that? I must have it!
4? I've got 21.
I'm a teacher. So that's about 3 months supply.
Well, well, what have we here? A well-paid teacher from Scotch College?
7 bottles whisky a month?! Do you teach your students drinking scotch?
Well hello there, Hank Moody.
Love scotch, but gee its an expensive hobby
I must be an addict have 51 different Whiskies at moment.. Grabbed a Talisker Storm tonight… But Lagavulin is one of my faves :-)
Without counting i'd definitely have over 30 bottles of scotch segregated into 3 types…'Only for me', 'Most for me and some to share' and 'session/sharing whiskys'
this one falls in the 2nd category.
haha that's a great sorting system!
This is excellent news since I just finished my last bottle
How long does a bottle normally last you?? I can go through a bottle of scotch in a week. I usually stick to cheaper stuff though closer to $40 a bottle. Never tried this one but looking at the reviews on Dan Murphy's I think I will grab a bottle.
Depends, I can go through a bottle in a week as well but I've slowed down to a bottle every 2-3 months since I'm looking to get toned.
I read reviews from Master of Malt instead since they have a much larger library of whiskies.
I'm currently going through following:
- Glenfarclas 175 (Not open yet)
- The Macallan 18YO
- Lagavulin 16YO (just finished)
- Ballantine's 17YO
16yo Lagavulin is a great dram! To those that finish a bottle a week, how's your liver?
A bottle a week equal to 3 drinks a night, that's less than two and half mid strength beer or 1/3 bottle of wine. Anyone can do it, but I don't drink more than one scotch
A few other deals from Dan's (since they matched 1st Choice's offer of 20% off selected single malts):
- Talisker 10yo $67.95
- Laphroaig 10yo $69.95
- Oban 14yo $84.90
