Darkest Legal Tint for Car

Can anyone recommend a reliable but fairly cheap place to get a darkest legal tint for my VW Golf Hatch? Preferably South/East Melbourne (VIC)
Seen some previous deals around the $150 mark but as high as $300… I would definately prefer the lower side of that range

Thanks in advance !

darkest legal tint is 35% - no exceptions

only the colour variation may give you a 'darker' look.
but you should ask them about their percentage rating, then worry about the colour.

if you want the really dark ones, where no one can peek through at night.
those type of cars probably have 20% tint.

i had 20% on at a stage. blind spots were a bit harder to see during night+rain,
ended up taking it off and putting on 35% purely for safe driving

    • If a car has a blind spot it won't matter what tint your running it will still be a blind spot. Adjust your mirrors and take care in the rain.

I have 20% and never had a problem. Its actually better at night and cuts down the glare. If I sell my car in Vic you'll have to remove it for the road worthy, in NSW your fine.

Most new cars that are tinted will already have 35% tint.

      • Hang on. Does that mean you can legally have 20% tint on your car in VIC as long as you're not selling it?

I heard about those "revenue raisers" using some kind of gun to test the tint and get a % measurement. Is that real?

        • Can confirm my best friend had his car defected, and one of the defects listed was 'tint too dark' which was tested on the spot (witnessed by said friend) by the police officer with a handheld device.

Friend wanted darkest legal tint on his car, person applying the tint did not realise there was a very light tint on the window already (from factory - brand new car), and so the combination of the light factory tint, with darkest legal resulted in non-compliance.

        • @Kkuba: Am i missing something? Who and why would you put tint on top of tint?

        • @Scorpiogirl:
A lot of cars come with the glass already partially tinted, so not putting tint on tint so to speak

darkest legal tint is 35% - no exceptions.

      Except when you want 18%

      • Yeah u r right, until u try and sell the car

Costs 4X as much to have the tint removed so you can get a RWC than it did to get it put on in the first place

True …I have a habit of keeping my cars till they die a natural death.

As a driver of a darkly tinted car I always notice it when I get into a car with no tint. I feel so exposed! And in summer the sun really burns! LOL

  • Don't be half assed, go all the way with 0% tint

edit: Here is a cheaper solution: http://i.imgur.com/D9pLLa0.jpg

  • Thanks for all the info/discussion guys, very much appreicated.

But, does anyone actually know places that will do this relatively cheaply for a fellow ozbargainer? :P

    • Where are you? I have mine done by a friend of a friend. Translated as someone who works in the car tinting industry and does it on the side. Always the darkest tint. It has it's risks but it is much cheaper and i have always been really happy with the work. Prefer for reducing heat but most importantly privacy. If you look on sites/apps like Groupon, Scoopon etc and/or negotiator magazine and even shop a dockets they some times have car window tinting deals.

      • South/East Melbourne, and oh wow yeah I didn't think of groupon, dockets etc. I'll give those a look, cheers !

  • Try around the Smaller places. I took my car (in QLD) to a family run business and they did my car in 18% tint for $225. They would have done darkest legal (35%) for $175 had I wanted that. I have found that the chains are all much more expensive than the smaller businesses.

    • Express tinting?

      • +1

Nope, a family run business called Tinted in Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast.

        • How's 20%, can you still see outside of the windows at night?

        • +1

@maybeamacy: I've had 18% on all my vehicles and never had any issues. On a street without lighting I sometimes need to wind my window down but that's very rare.

Or just don't get tint.. given the benefits claimed do not exist

I'm sure you'll find that the majority of people who get tinting aren't getting it done because of the purported health benefits.

        Agreed :)
I have tint and its for the look :)
was just being devils advocate :)

  • Will this tint be UVA and UVB safe?

    • any reviews for this?

    • Anyone tried this company yet?

  • I have Used CarX before - Did excellent Job on my Audi Q5 SUV for $235 12 months ago. Darkest legal - 100% satisfied

2 months ago did almost excellent job on my Audi S3 sedan. Paid $250. 35% front, 20% rear windows. Some very minor gaps in front windows on the side near the B pillar. the tinter blamed it on the way the car window was designed. I could see what he was saying but some other people I know with the same car done elsewhere had no gaps. Might have been an off-day for him. But I know he has been doing it for over 15 years so he is quite experienced. Anyways long story short. Most cars should be fine.

Note 1: not sure what tint brand they use for the scoopon deal but make sure they use Suntek - its one of the best. They generally use this so hopefully then dont use lesser brands for the deal.
Note 2: if you go darker than legal, if you get caught or if you are going to sell it just remove it - about $30 per window. so $150 all up. But unless you drive a "hoon" looking car, cops don't usually pull you over for tint.
Note 3: Do what I did. Go darkest legal at the front window and darker than legal at the rear (which is legal)
