[Resolved] Found car, need to make an offer . How much pls? /Need a Car but What to Get?

Edited 10/09/2015
I've bought a car. Thank you everyone for your advice + suggestions :)

Edited 3/09/2015

I've found a car! THE car!

Its a sedan and its not yellow :( In fact its a very bright metallic red , Mazda 3 SP5 Astina. Only 5 months old.

We took it for a test drive today. The kids approve of the 9 Bose Speakers and the sunroof:) Great car to drive. I can't believe how much I've missed driving a manual :)

The current owner , who is a colleague of JJB's,is moving overseas for a year and is happy to sell it to me at a bargain price with an option to buy it back from me in september 2016. This suits me as I only need the car for a year. Now all I have to do is make an offer.

Hi there :)

I need a car for a little over a year. The 2 most important criteria are : safety and reliability. I also need to be able to fit 2 squirmish 7-year olds and an even squirmisher Shih Tzu in the back seat.

I either ride my bike or take public transport to go to work and my new place is within walking distance from a shopping centre. So I'll only be using the car when I have the kids over.

Current car is a Touareg V6 TDi which I can use for as long as I need to but ideally I would like to get my own car within a month or 2.

Budget wise: no budget although considering my needs anything over $20,000 seems like a waste of money. Happy to get a second-hand car. Manual is fine. Kids would like bluetooth connectivity. Ideally it comes in yellow ( I have fond memories of my suzuki swift sport ) but if it doesn't, its not a deal breaker.

That's about it. So basically , I don't know what I'm looking for.Hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

Thank you.

Falcodore! Big, cheap and fun to drive.

    • Boganmobile though

Who cares if it suits the purpose?:)

Maybe a Holden Cruze, they are reasonable cheap and not completely tiny. Otherwise a Camery or something similar.

    • +8

and known for being the biggest heap of crap ever made after the CRAPtiva.

      Seriously don't get one.

  • +5

Have a look at the new Vitara if you have fond Suzuki memories. Based on the S-Cross platform so it's a 1.6 petrol, can easily see fuel economy under 7L/100.

New to the market but are being priced sharp. Keep it on the down-low but a new manual will be $22,990 drive away. 5yrs CPS, 5yr warranty. Reverse camera, garmin GPS, Bluetooth, cruise control, daytime running lights. 5 star safety 7 airbags.

Plus some very nice colours :) pre-order if you want the turquoise because it's gonna be popular!

Go have a look at a local dealer, see if it's big enough for you. They're in dealers though don't officially launch for 2 weeks, but you should be able to drive one away at that point.

    Source - I sell them :)

    • Thanks spackbace:) Love the 2-tone paint and the sunroof.I'll probably go orange metallic rather than turquoise ( I'm not really a turquoise kind of girl). Boot space is adequate for everyday use. Plus everything you've said sounds great.

The inside does look plasticky and a little tacky though (that chrome-finish-bling look o.o) But overall a good SUV for a bargain price.

My only concern is that I'm going to be selling the car in a year… at a huge loss. Wouldn't it be better if I get a second-hand one?

        That's up to you.

Sunroof is only on the higher up model, probably around the $30k mark. And add $1,000 for the black roof.

        • That's up to you.

What would you do if you were in my shoes though?

          @wicket1120:

Haha probably buy something 12 months old, already worn a bit of depreciation, still under warranty and hopefully CPS.

        • @Spackbace: Thanks :)

        • +2

@wicket1120: you're coming from a Touareg and a Macan, every brand new car under $30k is going to feel cheap and tacky. The way I see it , you can:

          1. keep the Touareg. It meets all your requirements and M.O.M won't take if off you until after we're officially divorced. In the meantime, why let your pride get in the way of driving the winner of best luxury SUV in 2013 ? I wouldn't.

          2. get a suzuki swift … just not in yellow pls. Champion or otherwise.

          3. Get a decent 12-24 months old car as suggested by Euphemistic, Tas and Spackbace.

          My 2c.

  • Dear - also Squirmy - DJ Wiki Wik,

We do live in such a throwaway society.

No need to sell in a year

You may decide to keep your Car Car.

    • At $777,000, it is slightly out of my price range. Too bad because it does come in yellow :(

      • +2

        Hurrumph!!

        Well, I never…

The colour you favour and a nice car that you can also drive all the way to Mauritius, dragging a majestic concatenation of fuel drums behind you. Potential and also majestic Jar Jar on the bonut as ship's figurehead. Ears flapping in the breeze. Otherwise petrified - of Sea Snakes.

        Image spoiled.

        Biotch.

So, Biotch, just how sensible do you want to be?

First comment in the thread hereby upvoted. A touch too big? Maybe a Camry. None of those three? Smaller as is in Swift / comment below? Sure, but you will miss the bulk-source / crazy-bargain source. How OzBargainy do you really want to be, Wiki? She who posted this on OzBargain?
        Very? Sure…

Do maybe pay a bit more than $20,000. Safety? Recent is very safe. Kids. You. 18 month-2 year old vehicle. Bulk of initial depreciation horror, gone. Highly toxic in-near-closed-quarters 'new car smell' VOC fumes-spike from new car plastics, foam, wiring - almost gone. Balance of 3 year new car warranty for the year you're still here. Don't want to buy at auction? Sure. Don't want to buy privately? Sure. Buy from a dealer, if you must. If antsy, engage sales broker, research pitfalls, then likely don't. Most cars - specific models, age mentioned - come from previously mentioned auctions. Anticipate no yellow. 'OzBargain-worthy' bargains in the main, but then prices duly padded. Always a glut of the specific models, non-Swift/small and usually from fleet, indicated and in indicated timeframe. Almost always well maintained even if slightly high k's relative to time on-road. Again, balance of new car warranty in play. Again, and if dealer, drive a hard bargain. Take or don't take Binks with you. Combine feminine wiles with possible (remaining / non-driven-insane by your aforementioned-'shitty'-job) nouse. Year down track: Almost get your money back when/if you sell the above purchase privately.

        Grrr.

        Enough? (Rhetorical question)

Another 'enough' opinion from me from time I don't have, is that amphibious vehicles aside (some peril in that - between the serenading and other stuff, Jar Jar is obviously a bit wet, soppy), you should probably still factor Flappy Ears into your future.

On 'boat'. In car. On plane.

@Tas: you know so much about me and my life that its almost freaky. The serenading was quite nice. Was his attire/ costume ( not sure what to call what he was wearing) on the night your idea? It was slightly weird, even for him.

I know what I'm looking for now, thanks to you and your sensible advice. Merci.

p.s: I've read your biotch as brioche which reminded me that I still haven't had lunch.I'm starving.

Hmm, I think quite a few people (myself included) are a little freaked-out by just how much we know about the lives of you two - on and by way of OzBargain. I can certainly recall being a bit indiscreet about some personal stuff back when, but nothing compared to..
Even vaguest acquaintances of yours, were they to read even a few comments posted on OzBargain - by either of you - would likely guess the identity of you two nutbags.

No - I don't recall being privy to Jar Jar's serenade-outfit choice last weekend. Comically canine or hapless version of lothario are my best guesses. More than happy for the actual reality to remain between you two.

I was going to link a couple of ridiculous images for you two to personally compare, but I'll just leave this one bit from the Urban Dictionary 'Lothario' entry. Made me laugh. Perilous paths…

Wiki, hapless serenading (and outfit) attempts aside, in your absence from his life, JJB may become one or more of those things.

Especially, maybe, 'mooch': 'To loiter in a bored or listless manner.'
A Jar Jar Binks at loose-ends is a truly disturbing idea.

… especially when combined with access to OzBargain.

I've been known, occasionally and in certain circumstance, to sing a certain warm-weather-related song (now that is discreet, and vague). With the warmer weather indeed coming, and with your reference to JJB's serenading outfit, I reckon that he might be singing this to you at some point soon - instead - possibly while dressed in overalls. Keep an eye, and an ear out for that.

Spin, and dance to, that track in the meantime, DJ Wiki.

          @wiki:

You replied to me before editing the main post. I clicked straight from the email notification with the original title in place and very nearly didn't notice the edit…

I spoke to someone for you.

You say that the owner is happy to sell the Mazda to you at a 'bargain price'. Their perception of that will depend, of course.

Round figures - assuming expected low kilometres (not mentioned) and no options or aftermarket above Astina spec (also not mentioned), car is worth around 30 in the context of a private sale. A dealer would pay 28-29.

If your 'friend/colleague of' is likely to be horrified by a realistic offer close to 10K under the list driveway-price that they may have paid - and factoring in the good-chance prospect of selling it back to them in a year - maybe don't make an offer that's too at odds with 30K. It's up to you.

You never know your luck. Their perception of 'bargain' may be nicely in your favour, given the circumstance (and your undoubted charm, also of course).

A lot can happen in a year, though, and for one reason or another they may not wish to re-purchase the Mazda from you, so keep that in mind - especially if their initial expectations are really out of whack with yours.

In any case - well, most cases - the car will be worth about 5K less in a year, so 23-24 to a dealer, 25K in a private sale.

Caution: Very likely less if car is borrowed by 'Captain Risky' or former ozbargainer 'keyur11'.

WWCDI, NAB, STP (Wanton-Wiki-Carpark-Donut-Induced, No-Available-Bucket, Shih-Tzu-Puke) is, of course, another possible source of further depreciation / THTC (Too-Horrific-To-Contemplate).

Drive safely and do have some fun.

@Tas: You are such a sweet man. Thank you for all the trouble you went to to help me.Much appreciated :)

Low kms, normal wear and tear as per my car mechanic and only other options other than the Astina specs is that bright red metallic paint. Something that I could have lived without. *sigh

So he's selling it to me for the bargain price of…I hope you're sitting down TAS… bargain price of $25,000!!! yep $25,000 :) But this offer does come with a few strings attached:

          1. he has the option of buying it back from me for $23,000 in a year's time. If I decide that I don't want to sell the car, then I don't have to. He can also choose not to exercise his option to buy it.

          2. he wants me to house-sit his place. Its smaller than my current place but closer to the kids and JJB. Walking distance for a little Ewok kind of closer :) The kids will have to share a room and probably a bed when they are over but they are happy to do it.

          3. take care of Bonnie. She'll warm up to me.

          4. keep an eye on his grandparents. They are a sweet couple and live nearby. They were good friends with JJB's grandma. My kids are very fond of them.So am I. Calling them weekly and visting them once a month is no burden at all.

That's about it. Does it sound too good to be true? Its not. The owner of the mazda is a good mate of JJB's and we've helped him out a couple of times when he was down on his luck before, so now he's returning the favour :)

I did good, didn't I? I'm pretty stoked with myself.

Have a great weekend Tas and thank you again :)

        • +2

Yup. A good reason to be stoked.

Assuming that 'Bonnie' isn't plotting your death, and Ewok's - even as I type - it does, indeed, sound like a good deal. Seems odd to me for a cat to have it, but that name does have a certain (very nice) resonance for me, so maybe you can consider that to bode well.

If you wear nail polish, be sure to colour-coordinate it with your new car.
The nail polish doesn't need to be metallic, but it does need to be red.

          Hey!

I was fully expecting you to come back with a quip that speaks to your love of yellow and intended defiance in wearing yellow in your new red car.

''Listen…" I likely would have written in reply, "I like a nice yellow mango as much now as a fully grown adult as I did when just a smiley sticky bub post-mango in a bath tub, but…"

Then I probably would have written some more, here

…and then some further ramble about how women who can very prettily carry off a yellow dress and who love filling empty bowls in their houses with lemons should probably still mix things up just a bit more than some do…

Plus written some more stuff here, probably…

…and then maybe I would have linked a certain non-submarine song that anyone over the age of seven should, also & bemusedly, have heard their strange yellow-loving Mum sing - in the car - but maybe haven't, yet

…and then maybe I would have linked a song by a sweet indie band that I still have the original cd of, somewhere.

Maybe I would have done that.

Anyway, week pretty much still just started, now ruined.

As island DJ's go, Wiki sounds a little unadventurous. I'm sure that I could put together a crate of obscure remixes from my collection that might spark-up her sets a bit when she goes back to…

Wiki, no Coldplay or Goo Goo Dolls mixes of any sort, I'm afraid (sorry).

Closest mainstream are some pretty nice mixes of Radiohead's 'Everything in its Right Place'.

Original Album Mix. God, I love this song. Also coldplay-yellow-song-ish, though only by way of a lemon-lyric. Still, why is the link lettering for this, in blue? Mysterious. It will also be mysterious, and disturbing, if neither of you have heard this song.

James Lavelle remix My favourite mix, but with a jarring conclusion.

Gigamesh remix Also good. Enjoy the yellow sunglasses, Wiki.

Ta, Youtube. Haven't heard this before:

Music-listening /intended jetlag-breaking, stream-of-consciousness exercise (likely fail), ends. Zombie day awaits.

I have 2 more questions for you. They are more of a philosophical nature… so right up your alley:)

1.Is it ok to rejoice in one's vindication, even if it comes at the cost of someone else's humiliation?

A wicked woman from my kids' school had to apologise for starting a vile rumour about me and my daughter's teacher. Rumour which I knew nothing about until I got called to the principal's office today(although I did notice that the other mothers had been giving me the cold shoulder for a week or so). So I got an apology + an apology letter + an apology from her husband ( who looked like a nice, decent man). His apology sounded sincere. Hers, less so. I can't feel bad for her, no matter how hard I try. she brought this upon herself: she could have ruined that young man's career and made things awkward for the twins.

2.can one get drunk on half a glass of pinot noir? The kids and JJB had threw a party to celebrate the "signing of the contract":) I had a little bit of everything and half a glass of wine. I'm feeling tipsy. Could it be the wine? Or am I giddy on love and happiness? My kids are amazingly sweet. So is JJB. I might have to crash on his couch tonight.

I once had a girlfriend who purchased and actually wore - just to torture me, and more than once - a nail polish in a charming colour/shade that she herself described as 'Baby-shit Brown'.

I'm sure that 'Sunwashed', suits you, considerably better than that particular colour, suited her.

Haven't the two of you been through enough lately? It's time for something really great to happen for both of you. At least it's your doona… So I hope that means she is back where you wanted her ;)

        • @Miss Dior:

Assuming that we both haven't given the reading of OzB comments away as being an entirely silly pastime (that, plus the writing of - well overdue in my case), we will no doubt continue to hear about the vicissitudes in the lives of the Turbulent Twosome..

As regards, much can/will happen in the next year, but one shouldn't hold one's breath, Miss Dior.

          :0

          Have a good day.

No doubt. I couldn't hold my breath even if I wanted to. Still, in a world where people are less connected than ever before, I will continue to send both JJB and Wiki positive energy and thoughts, since it costs nothing to bring a little empathy and kindness into the lives of those whose paths we cross. We never know what others are going through, no matter how good their lives may look to those on the outside. Besides, as any long married couple would tell, there are tough times, they just talk their way through them and parting ways is never considered as an option to overcoming them since being without the other makes the good times less enjoyable and the difficult times unbearable.

Enjoy the weekend. Tomorrow is going to be a beaut day here in my part of old Sydney Town. We're even supposed to beat Brissie temps!

        • @Jar Jar Binks:

Good to hear. Don't discount the impact of coming down off an adrenaline high combined with low levels of alcohol (or even no alcohol). Recent events would overwhelm the immune systems (and mental health) of the healthiest people. The reason doesn't matter, it's the outcome that counts. Have a nice weekend.

I reckon that this particular thread should end here.
If only for my own tired-self's sake.

I am glad that you're feeling better, Pinot Princess.

I trust that nobody in the 'soon-to-be, tree-housed, fambam' falls foul of the dreaded 'Ice Cream Headache'.

          Stay out of trouble.

I'm fine. I shouldn't have taken my prn so soon after that drink. It knocked me out for good.

JJB made sure I was ok, gave me his bed for the night and even fed me at 3 am when I woke up starving. He was the perfect gentleman. He always is :)

          /end of thread

        • @Miss Dior:

Thank you for your positive thoughts and kindness :)

Someone, in another post, compared JJB unfavourably to a dog.Just to clarify: JJB hasn't done anything wrong. He has always been a faithful, loyal ,supportive and loving partner. My best friend and my rock. I couldn't have dreamed of a better husband:)

I chose to leave because of health reasons. I've already put him through so much that it wouldn't be fair to drag him into this roller coaster ride again.Someone has to be there for the kids. He can't be there for the kids and me, and still be able to cope. Its too much to ask of one man; no matter how wonderful that one man is.

It was all part of the original agreement and I'm guessing he will do everything to keep it and look after the children as well.

        • @pointscrazy:
The thread's still active, I see.

I have truly, properly, now, decided to stop second-guessing Wiki's intent and perception in relation to - well - most things.
Her somewhat disturbing choice of nail polish colour aside, she is clearly a smart woman.

There are also - clearly - layers involved in all of this that we are and have been substantially unaware of. Undoubtedly layers, also, that relate to her perception of JJB. She has made some decisions.

As I said, above, somewhere, much can and will happen in the next year. Hopefully, her health issues improving considerably before she heads West and to Home (via boring Perth), will be one of the good things that happen.

Wearing red nail polish, being another.

        • @Tas:

Undoubtedly layers, also, that relate to her perception of JJB.

          In plain english pls?

Edit: It's ok. I'll just have to stop by her place early tomorrow morning to ask her about those layers.

@Tas, I do have a question that only you can answer. Do chooks eat snakes or is it the other way around? PLanning on getting a couple of chooks.

        • +1

          @Jar Jar Binks: Hi, JJB.

I had forgotten the name of it, but here you go

I have no idea what that bird's eggs taste like, but it might be a better option for you…

P.S. Yes, Jar Jar, chook pens do tend to attract snakes a bit. The chooks will - no doubt - kick up an above average fuss to let you know - if that's any help?
I have had plenty of snake experience, but my chook experience-background - as a suburban kid - involved no snake interactions, given locale.

I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you.

          Deal with it :)

What's wrong with getting another's Suzuki swift?

If not, get a Mazda 3 or Toyota Corolla. Good resale prospects so you won't lose too much $. Buy something a few years old. The older you buy the less you will lose when you resell in 12 months.

    • I've had a look at the Suzuki Swift. Its looks less cool than I remember it. Not a fan of the corolla.
I've booked a test drive for a mazda 3 this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion :)

    Hello, JJB.

There was a missed call on my phone on the weekend. Country code of +216, which Google revealed to be Tunisia. I don't know anybody in Tunisia. It did remind me of Star Wars, though, which in turn reminded me of you.

In a roundabout way, as only such a thing might do.

You have been particularly OzB-quiet of late. Not as quiet as Princess V, but quiet.

A second, round-a-bout, reminder - that actually prompts this whole comment, is that I was confronted by the sight of a particularly 'adventurous' top-knot, or 'man-bun', today.
I very nearly threw up on those nearby - adjacent and innocent, non man-bun wearers. It reminded me that you, by way of a comment in this very thread, were at one point contemplating the sporting of one.
Worse, having pretty much left you to your own devices for a couple of months, I fear that you may have moved instead and beyond to a 'high pony' that would not look out of place in the Australian Netball Team.

    Please confirm otherwise.

In other important matters, this recently-encountered photo, and this just-now-encountered blog: http://taniamccartney.blogspot.com/2012/08/googy-eggs.html has left me pondering the question of whether you really ever did buy those chooks for J-Twin edutainment, or whether you in fact chickened-out after the reported preliminaries?

I certainly feel robbed of any vicarious fresh-egg collection enjoyment, by way of no updates. Some others who read this thread, no doubt do, too.

    Un-eggs-eptable Unacceptable.

    :(

Do say hello to the Mauritian Minx.
    She of the shudder, F.C.D.

P.S. She was having discipline problems with him at time of last comments - I believe that Kelpie D turned rogue and ate Miss Dior. In memoriam ❁, I suppose.

    Hi Tas,

Nope still alive. Some of the boxes in my workshop aren't though. Someone made the mistake of putting Kelpie in the workshop on some of our high 30s/low 40s Brisbane humidity days while we had business to attend to. Toys to occupy him. Water to drink. No. Ate storage boxes instead. Someone tried to hide the damage from me. Remind me to give both of them the toe of my boot.

Just been busy solving problems. Mine and a friend's - who coincidentally is moving up your way, or rather, a bit further west. Lots to settle here first. So OzB has been on the hit and miss list unfortunately. 2016 was supposed to be a better year. In some ways it is, just need to get rid of some "energy suckers" out of our lifestyle. I like peace. Pity others don't. So that's my goal for 2016 - peace, lots of it and less time at the computer included.

So where is Wiki? I have missed a bit, haven't I? Hope you and JJB are doing well and staying out of mischief. What am I saying? Mischief is JJB's second name. Oh well, hope you are both healthy at least.
