X Trail ST-L or Pathfinder ST-L?

I am contemplating between the Nissan X-Trail ST-L with 7 seats and Nissan Pathfinder ST-L. If you can put down your general opinion about two the cars (considering my needs) would be great!

Needs are as follows:
Mostly used by two adults and two young kids/toddlers
Car with enough room for couple of baby seats and prams etc
Ability to accommodate occasional extra adults passengers (In-Laws or Parents)
High driving position and leather seats
Plan to keep the car for at least 7-8 years
Don't mind a demo or used car in factory warranty
Based in Sydney
Might be able to novate lease and or get fleet pricing (haven't explored these yet)

Positives about X-trail STL are
Small enough to find parking anywhere and big enough for most needs
About 10k cheaper (I hoping to pick one around 37k on road for a demo)

Negatives about X-Trail STL are
No AWD/4WD option (not a big deal but thought it would nice to have on a rainy day)
3rd row seats are very small and getting in and out is a bit of problem
When all seats are in use there is no cargo space (even for prams)

Positives about Pathfinder STL are
7 adults can sit comfortably
Enough cargo space even when using all seats
Moon and Sun roof (Always wanted one, never really needed one though)

Negatives about Pathfinder STL are
10+k more than the X-Trail STL
car is too big to find and park in most Sydney car parks (I might get used to it)
Petrol consumption is relatively high compared to X-Trail

Thanks in advance for your opinion

Looked at both recently when we were looking for an SUV, the Pathfinder has one of the best 3rd row seats of the ones we looked at (xtrail/Kluger/Sorrento/Santa Fe/Outlander),
Had a good range of gadgets for the price, seating position was good, and overall spacious, and the styling looked good from outside.
Inside a little bit plasticy but not as bad as the Kia or Hyundai for that point of view. Driving was average, a little sluggish and handling ok not amazing.
Xtrail smaller space, but decent on the other aspects.
However looking into review and people's experiences with Pathfinder especially there were lots of complaints, and problems with the transmission esp. Put us off, and when we asked the dealer about these he just avoided answering. Xtrail has a bit better rep and a decent car for the price, but generally feel a little bit suspicious of the after care from Nissan. This is a possible biased view as have had 3 toyotas and been lucky with very good sales and post sales exp with them.

From the Toyota point of view the Kluger is a great 7 seater to drive a family around good spaced boot, but small 3rd row seats ( so if reg 3rd row usage may not be great), decent power, not amazing but a bit of a fuel guzzler. Very comfortable ride and great for long trips. The interior one of the better out of the mentioned cars, though Pathfinder may be similar or even better. Price wise a bit more then the others. But good after service care generally and reliable. (possible a boring choice though).

Sorento and Santa Fe - both a little plastic insice, outside nice enough, Sorento esp looks good, good driving, better then I'd expected, but small interior and very small 3rd row. After sales care mixed reviews. Generally a little poor, but good warranties with the car.

Outlander - just didn't enjoy the drive, felt a bit unresponsive, and didn't look much more into it, but may be an option for you.

Discovery Sport is also a new car in the 7 sea bracket, but it is a bit on exp side, and reliability with Land Rover has been very poor in past ( they apparently are improving that) - good looking car with good specs though.

Out of the two mentioned I'd go Xtrail. But check out the other options before you do so if not fixed on Nissan.
Also if SUV is not as imp - maybe something like the 7 seater Prius. (assuming 7 seats more imp)

    • Thank you very much for taking time in giving some valuable insights. I'm not too hung up on Nissan but reading in different forums I realised I could get about 10-12% discount on list price so and most people seem to be happy with X-Trail. I will look into other alternatives. I am trying to control the spend below 40k for x-trail or similar or upto 45k approx for Pathfinder or similar.

  • I was in the market for top of the range 7 seater a couple of years ago. X-trail was too small for me and Pathfinder was too expensive. Either way, not a big fan of Nissan brand.
I ended up with Fiat Freemont instead. Great car for $40k-ish, unfortunately I could not wait for the V6 version to comes out (Freemont V6, not Dodge Journey). Handling and comfort feel better compared with Captiva (similar price range), CX9, Kluger and Santa-Fe (>$60k).

    • I originally looked at Freemont but for needs (about 90%) I wouldn't use the 7 seats but do want a car that has some decent 3rd seats. I was looking at Sante Fe but not sure about the brand and resale value (in case I decide to change couple of years down the line)

  • In Carsguide last week a reader wrote in wanting to know which vehicle to buy - Nissan Pathfinder or Toyota Kluger. The guy from Carsguide recommended the Pathfinder as the better vehicle.

I suppose it may come down to how important the third row seats are to you as the XTrail is for children and teenagers possibly but Pathfinder can accommodate adults in the third row.

    • We are leaning towards X-Trail at this stage due to cost and the fact that we will only use the 3rd row rarely.

  • I think you are nuts buying a car with a CVT, it is just asking for trouble. For that money you can get a Grand Cherokee which is a better car in every way.

I bought a lancer with CVT in 2008 and it still running smooth without any troubles. I think CVT doesnt necessarily mean trouble but might depend on a particular batch. I like the way Grand Cherokee looks but it doesnt have 3rd row seats. If I am going to settle for a 5 seater I prefer buying something smaller like an X-Trail or CX5

      • CVTs are terrible gearboxes, and by design they will fail. The drive and engine sides are connected by belts! The CVT on Toyota hybrids is belt driven however.

I have a Nissan Murano that has CVT and no issues in the 5 years I have had the car.

I read a lot of car magazines and websites and all cars get mixed reviews from owners so you can't single out one issue like CVT. Jeep Grand Cherokee has had more recalls than almost any car.

Also, if you don't care about AWD, don't buy an SUV. There is nothing worse than a FWD poser SUV. Get a Prius V, cheaper to run, more reliable, easier to park and drive.

I'm in the same dilemma at the moment. I love Xtrails but taking them for long trips on the sand is a deal breaker. Have a look at a new Mitsi Challenger. Price will be around $37k plus you get real 4wd and an economical 2.5lt diesel engine, and a 5yr warranty.

If it's only a choice between the two and money isn't the object here…Pathfinder. X-trail is a lower build quality overall and built to a cheaper price point. I've always found them to be a bit wanting in the power and comfort stakes. The Pathfinder, once it all settles in is very capable. If you are looking at offroad - x-trail is a toy…pathfinder is proven (just get the right tyres for the job).

Nissan Service (and this is my experience with the Brighton one) is crap and since the last time I had a service there and they charged me full price and there wasn't even a finger print on the airbox (air filter inspection is applicable on EVERY service)…I don't trust them to service the car the way they say they do. So get the factory service manual and do it yourself…it is very easy, they have designed their cars to be very easy to service (if you have the manual).

I'm little worried about the after sales service. I am still in a dilemma. Will read some more forums for views of current owners. X-Trail owners (current model) seems to be happy with the car so far.Need to read more on the other cars.

  • OP, I have been told by my brother in law who was a service manager for a a multi chain dealership that Nissan, out of all of the major brands was the worst at honoring warranties and repair, this was a directive from Nissan. He went back to being an auto elec about two years ago, so this maybe out date information but it is worth noting.

Thanks for the heads up, I have a couple of friends who drive Nissan, I will ask for their experience with service as well.

  • If you are planning on carrying bubs in seats and prams etc with the third row in use be aware of how much space is left behind the third row. Also on how easy/difficult it is to get in and out of the third row while carrying kids in Bub seats. It's not so hard when they get to booster seats as they pop in and out quickly, but a strapped down baby seat is a pain to move just to get into the back.

We had a Captiva (I know) the space behind the third row was almost non existent. When child three came along and we started using the third row more we ended up trading it in for a previous model pathfinder which has heaps more space behind the third row. Extra space wasn't the only reason we traded, electronic niggles and extra available cash at the time helped the decision.

I'm also led to believe that it is possible to tilt the middle row in a current pathfinder with a child seat fitted. Something worth investigating. You may be better off considering a different people mover if you need regular third row access while baby seats are fitted.

In my case its one toddler in booster and the other in capsule (there won't be a 3rd child :)). 3rd row is probably used twice a month if that. I love the idea of getting the pathfinder but I being conscious of extra cost in purchase and petrol.

      • Ultimately it's your decision, just offering what we have found to help you decide.

        • Appreciate your opinion bro! really do, that's exactly why I posted this. Sorry I was typing earlier whilst watch Pablo Escobar on Narcos!

  • Nissan's are great cars. I have 2 Maximas. Love being able to change the oil without jacking the car up to get at the sump or oil filter - simple job. The engineering is top notch.

As for servicing stuff I feel too beyond me…I take it to K-Mart Tyre and Auto at Southland, they do a brilliant job.

  • i am looking for xtrail STL 2wd as well, the best price is 34k drive away
STL 7 seat would be 36K with floor mats and full tank, might be window tint as well

    • Ended up buying a 20 months old ti 2wd with 31k kms for 41.5k

      • bit pricey, I bought a 2015 xtrail STL 2wd silver(weather shield, boot mat, full tank) for 35.6k, traded in 2011 ford fiesta for 9k, so paid up 26.6k at the end

        • Lef out some finer detail in my previous comment. I ended up buying pathfinder Ti.

        • Congrats on the new car. I'm sure you will have heaps of fun.

        • @Ace26: nice car man

        • Hey wxwsf.. Came across this old post. I am planning to buy xtrail stl as well. What is your review? Is the 3rd row usable when needed? Does it drive smooth?
