Need Advice: How Do You Buy Products?

Hello everyone, I need some general advice for the bargain hunters here.

What's the best process to follow?

Let's say you want to buy a particular item: Do you WAIT for it to go on sale or do you just buy the item you need for the cheapest possible place on the same day WITHOUT waiting?

Is it best to keep checking Ozbargain for this item to become discounted?

What does OzBargain recommend?

if you need the item right away, you look for the cheapest price

if you can wait you wait until its cheap……

    • Thanks!

I was just curious if there was a "buying policy" that Ozbargainers could recommend I follow.

  • I go to a store and try to bargain them down!

Haha pretty sure a lot of OzBargainers just buy things coz they're cheap. I know I'm guilty.

  • If you wouldnt buy an item at full price, you dont need it.

My rule of thumb is if i dont need an item, I will consider impulse buying if its at a good price but only if i could sell it for equal or more value

  • Firstly, do research on Google to gain the best price available. Factor in any shipping costs, length of time for delivery & weigh up the importance of having the product NOW or waiting for a couple of weeks for it to arrive. Personally, after researching the item I am interested in on Google, I normally call a local store with the price offered, to see if they will price match - or better. Most times they do & I get my goods very quickly. Just have to drive there to pick them up - not a hardship.

    • do you include costs of driving in your calculations?

      • Being as mostly I would be going to the area for normal shopping, that question is irrelevant - as will pick up on the way. I am very much a person who decides the days route for shopping @ the quickest route - my list is sorted, store calls are placed in easiest routes - i.e. furthest away first & work my way back - doesn't always work out , but 90% does.
I am not a stay at home person ,but when need to travel distances to shop, will work out the best way to achieve the time spent on travel, items needed & cost factor in fuel economy.

  • For non-perishable items see deal on ozbargain then buy.

OP, if you are an age pensioner then you don't have time to wait before buying. It should be check the best price and buy today.

  • You should only buy things you need and appreciate. Only pay full-price for things you love.

In saying that, I stock up on essential items when they go on sale.

I can't explain why I have so many shoes or hand bags though lol Shoes - I need them to go on my feet and match my outfits? :)

  • If people on OZB say "Buy!" you say "How many"

  • Be far easier just to tell everyone what you want to buy. There's probably some specific replies depending on what it is. It might be something that never goes on sale anywhere, ever. It might be something that's silly buying brand new - so ebay…

  • Thanks for the replies!

I'm not looking to buy anything in particular. I was more looking for the best 'strategy' to follow.

  • Was there ever a set of 'official principles' outlined by Ozbargain folk?
