MSY - Seagate 3TB NAS HDD $144 and 4TB NAS HDD $210 (StaticIce $156 & $224) + $30 Cashback Offer

270

I am looking for a new HDD for my Gen8 Microserver running XPEnology (Synology OS) - preferably something I can pick up this morning.
MSY price seems decent compared to others on StaticIce, and they have plenty of stores around Australia.

Note: these drives are designed specifically for 24x7 operation in NAS/RAID setups - you can get cheaper non-NAS models for ~$131/$187 (3TB/4TB) at MSY - but if you are planning on installing in a NAS or RAID setup, its only a few $$ more ($13/$23).

4TB NAS HDD

Best-Fit Applications:
-Home servers or desktop NAS solutions
-Small-business file sharing
-Backup servers

$30 Cashback promo from Seagate when you buy TWO NAS disks (plus $15 per drive for 3+)
http://seagatespecials.com.au/cashback/

$129 each after Cashback for 2x 3TB (~cheaper than 2x 3TB non-NAS disks, that do not get Cashback)
$196 each after Cashback for 2x 4TB

I believe these drives have a 3 year Seagate warranty.

Id stay away from Seagate 3TB.

    • Really? A quick search of the model number shows fairly good ratings. 3 year warranty.

yeah thats the desktop variant - not the NAS editions

        • +6

Not a fair comparison. Those were entry level desktop hard drives (half of them taken out of external USB HDD enclosures) from back in 2011-2012.

This deal is for a completely different model, manufactured 4 years later, designed for 24x7 NAS operation. The reviews on the NAS model are generally very good.

          @systmworks:

I still have a sneaking suspicion that either 1) backblaze is a shill for WD (they generally give bad reviews to seagate)
          2) they order all their drives specifically from one bad batch. (they mention this that HEAPS of these drives were purchased when the thailand disaster hit - who knows if they didnt get their drives pre-damaged lol)
people that slam seagate always seem to have those 2 backblaze articles to link only.

People who work at msy etc ought to know the exact ratio of drives they get back from WD/Seagate vs their sales.

But this one is so cheap - at $10K it's hard to resist!
      http://www.msy.com.au/qld/slackscreek/pc-components/15096-se…

      • Wow. My 3TB WD Purple (Surveillance) HDD only cost me $155.
They must have put that price on to stop anyone buying it as its out of stock.

    • As with any hard disk brands — your mileage might vary.

I had a WD once, and it failed on me after 5 months. Good thing it was pretty easy to RMA it. That didn't stop me from buying WD though — my current desktop has like 4 WDs and 2 Seagates attached.

Anyway, this promo is for NAS drives — designed to be more robust than the desktop variant.

I stay away from Seagate full stop.

    • I've had three Seagate external HDDs. Admittedly I'm a heavy user, but all three have failed within two years and the last one was my backup before I got a chance to buy another so I lost years of stuff. I'll never buy Seagate again.

      • +1

But was it the drive, or power supply?

  • +2

You beat me before I can post.
However if you buy 2 NAS drives you can get $30 cashback from Seagate.

    • Now I am wondering.. do I spend $114 extra for a second 3TB drive (after cashback) or just $144 for 1…

Needs to be single receipt for both drives.

  • Looks good what is warranty?

    • I think its 3 years. That is what is listed on retailers such as ComputerAlliance and MWave.

  • +1

These prices have been going UP in recent weeks, not down, off the back of the declining dollar.

Bare 3TB/4TB drives seem to have stubbornly stuck at the same price level for ages now, despite the 6TB-8TB drive coming along and the same drives in external housings coming in cheaper.

It won't be long before the 6TB drives will have better price per GB than the 3TB.

    • We have been looking at enterprise SAS as work and this is already the case. 6TB SAS is already lower $/TB than 4 & 3TB.

  • Hey guys would these NAS drives be perfect if I put an SSD in my Media Center for the OS then put one of these 4TB NAS drives in there for storage and running torrents for extended periods?

    Thanks

    • +4

Would be fine. The NAS disks are supposed to last around 30% longer. No oral strip required.

  • Still waiting on my backorder from last MSY deal! >:|

      What was that deal?
I always order online and then pick up in store, but am lucky one is 5 mins drive away. Have you checked online stock to see if they have any in stock now?

Around 80% of their stores in Australia appear to have these 2 drives in stock at the moment.

  • Stone Computers (not affiliated with it) is offering a 5 bay Thecus N5550 NAS at $465 (not sure if this is the cheapest around — though the lowest among sites I've checked). A Synology or QNAP might be better though but for its price, it probably is hard to beat.

The Thecus seems to be a good match for these Seagates.

I personally own a 2 Bay Thecus N2200 NAS and pretty much happy with it.

    • +1

That seems like a decent spec NAS for the price, but I chose to spend around $280 for a higher spec HP microserver.

      Celeron CPU vs Atom.
      Dual gigabit NIC.
      Same 2GB ram.
Can run virtually any OS incl Windows Server, Linux, Synology, Freenas, VMware
4-bay at front, but can support to to 14 drives (internal and USB)

      • Certainly a better option if you're tech savvy enough. ;)

BTW, did you mean spend $280 more for a higher spec'ed HP MicroServer? It doesnt look like you have the N54L based on the spec you listed. I could be wrong though.

        • +1

The Gen8 models have been down to around $269-290 delivered several times.
So $280 total, not in addition to $465

        • +1

Its available today for around $290 with the eBay 20% off promo code. Photos of the Gen8 in link below. Around $7 cashback via CashRewards as well, so net price around $283 delivered.

You are correct it requires a little extra computer knowledge than a standard NAS appliance, but not that much if choosing a basic OS.
Once the OS is installed (which can be a 10 minute job with XPEnology) it acts pretty much like a store-bought NAS.
Later I might upgrade the RAM to 16GB and install VMware (can still run Synology OS virtually, plus other things) but at the moment a NAS is all I need.

I just got home with my 2x Seagate 3TB disks.
Will complete the online cashback form, then shut down the HP, install the new disks, create a fresh XPEnology boot USB stick (a cheap $4 USB stick, that plugs onto the motherboard inside the case), and set up the new disks as 2 separate 3TB volumes with a fresh install of the latest Synology OS.
I am not going to mirror them, as I do regular offline backups (to USB 3.0 portable HDD's, stored away from the NAS).

  • For a nas your best choice is the Hitachi coolspin's. Buy these and pull out the drives:
    http://www.msy.com.au/qld/varsitylakes/hard-drive/14941-hita…

    • The Deskstar Coolspins (5400RPM) aren't bad from what I gather but if you're welling to stretch $40 bucks more I'd recommend the HGST Deskstar NAS 4TB.

It's got a rotational vibration sensor, 1 million hour MBTF and despite having a 7200RPM spindle speed my two Desktar NAS HDDs are quieter than other 5400RPM drives and hit 34C at the hottest. The TLER/CCTL time-out delay is also configurable via Smartmontools; it's a true enterprise-class HDD (unlike the WD Reds) that is around $60-80 dollars cheaper than the 4TB variants of the WD RE/SE, UltraStar or Seagate Enterprise series.

      • Good advise there. I might order a couple of them to go into my micro server.

      • How long is the warranty on Ultrastar? Personally I am looking forward to pricing on 6TB drives with 5 years warranty.

  • I have an old Mediahub that just had one drive die. So, I go to MSY & for some reason, I'm not offered the choice to select "ship" two, 2 TB NAS drives? All I have is "pickup in store- free"?

    Wtf??

    • Their website is a bit shite. You may have clicked on the "Order online - pickup from store" icon on the homepage.
There is a separate icon on the homepage for ordering online with delivery - poor design - should be allowed to choose pickup/delivery at checkout time.

      • That IS weird!

Edit: I just tried again. Deleted cookies, went to the home button, put them in the cart— same thing! I cannot choose to ship.

Will have to ring, I suppose. Or give up, pay a bit more, & use PLE- who don't have MSY's terrifically bunged-up site which makes it impossible to place an order with them.

        Sheesh

  • How do these compare to WD's RED drives?

    • WD RED's are more expensive, slightly slower (except for RED PRO models), but many people feel the WD's are more reliable than the Seagates.

  • Weird, I bought a couple of these 3TB ST3000VN000 about a year ago for general storage specifically because the Seagate site said they come with a 5 year warranty in AU (and NZ). It says 3 years now. I wonder what changed.
    Edit: Not weird, just noteworthy.

  • Seagate emailed me today to congratulate me on my $30 cashback - so the system works :)

  • Prices are showing up as $158 and $224 now. So now you are basically only saving $1 per HDD with the $30 cash back.

    • ?? They were $144 and $210 (BEFORE cashback, so the $15 per drive is an extra discount once received) and cheaper than anything else on StaticIce when the deal was posted.

      • Yes but now if you click on the links for the 2 drives they are showing up as $158 and $224, so it looks like MSY have increased the price of each by $14.
