Wondering if It Would Be Worth Doing

Hello Ozbargain users,

My name is Michael i manage a locally owned business in Smithfield, SA (30 mins north of Adelaide).

I thought i would ask the question here in this introduction forum, as i have just created an account.

I figured ozbargain could be a good way to inform people of our stocktake deals and discontinued stock specials.

Generally when a new product is coming out, i would drop the price in most cases below cost price of certain items in order to prepare for the new models just so we don't end up being stuck with previous models. I notice that most competition still advertise their old stock for the normal pricing and will hold onto it for too long.

As an example, a new CPU water cooler came out a few months ago, it has already been replaced with an improved model that is the same price. So i have dropped the price to wholesale just so we don't end up being stuck with it.

Now my main problem is, we have an online pricelist - not an online store (checkout is disabled). So any deals that i would potentially post would be for pickup only/retail clients, and have limited stock.

We are a service/repair based company primarily with the benefit of having a retail show room, and may eventually upgrade the site to offer an actual online store. but its not our primary focus at the moment, the retail is more of a supplement.

So to summarize:

i would like to post deals when we are discontinuing stock, or even refurbished goods. But there will be limited stock in most cases, and is for retail only.

Thanks for your time.

Wordpress + Woocommerce + Virtue theme = Good online store, little time, no money.

Need to ensure there's at least 10 units in stock to put a deal up

Also make sure it's cheap on the market, check www.staticice.com.au to compare to other retailers. If you're not the best price, don't expect positive votes.

As a store rep, aim on positive votes. It gets you more exposure, and allows you to post more often.

Maybe try setting up an Ebay store for your posts, to allow others to order? People will be skeptical of a low rating, but they'll have the reassurance of Paypal for purchasing.

  • Thanks for the feedback.

  • I see your problem… stock to clear at a bargain price but not much of it and no online buying access for customers… prefer local pickup sales.
So then you would obviously want to contact / attract local buyers to your "specials" and not a nation wide audience like ozbargain?
I would utilise the benefits of Gumtree for free ads and a targeted local audience and also sign up to OCAU (Overclockers Australia), they have a large audience and a very active forum for the sale of IT goods. There would surely be buyers in your area that are members of OCAU.

Don't bother selling new(like new but never used before(for example un-opened supposed ex-demo or something) and using it only once or twice(just so people can pass the barrier of selling it used doesn't count as used and still counts as new) or Brand new stuff there - they don't tolerate users who do - read the wiki and stikies they tell you only used stuff.

So unless you got used stuff there, sure you can unload over there, but otherwise don't bother. Also if you do sign up, there's a waiting period of 3 months before you can access the for sale forum, from the first post you make, anywhere, on the forum; thus you sorta have to at least post once or else they won't register even if you waited 3 months(one guy did this and waited 3 months just to access the for sale forums(without posting anything) so he could sell his tablet but found out you needed to post at least once or else it doesn't register).

Indeed xywolap, Thanks for the suggestions.

Perhaps when i get the online store running properly again in the future, i will revisit ozbargain again.

    • If items listed on here by retailers as a "bargain" are not less than the common good price for that item the listing soon gets noticed as spam or free advertising.

consider google adwords. You can target specific geographic markets. so when someone googles "CPU water cooler" from Adelaid, your add will show. This will cost you to advertise, but you can set your own budget and you know your market will be relevant.

  • I'd consider using eBay to post your deals, yes there are fees and everything but it is a great way to sell things while you refurbish your online store.

You could potentially post eBay links as "bargains" that way you'd still get some online sales.
