Buying a Small Island in Australia?

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right category to post in, but out of curiosity.
Does anyone here happen to own a small island in Australia?
What things/potential/opportunities do you look for in buying an island? A friend of mine is buying an island with a group of friends and I was going to visit the site with them.

From what I know the island does have an electricity supply currently and does have a couple of houses/shacks.
Is it a bad idea at the moment? Rising Sea Levels lowering the area year by year?

Curious to hear! Cheers

if ur expecting to develop it, you need to consider things like electricity, fresh water etc.

if you just wanna camp on it, go crazy

  • I know of a great looking house in Sydney if your interested…great water views.

-_- don't think OP can afford a house in SYD, only an island. If you buy in Melbourne in the next 2 minutes, you'll still have some change left over

What are their plans for this island?

A private getaway? Your very own slice of paradise? Like Sartre said, "L'enfer, c'est les autres" ("Hell is other people").

If this island was for sale, I would buy it. But its not :(

      • Monsieur Binks,

Hell / the watery version thereof, can also be a place on Earth - especially when only as far above sea-level as that island is.

Down the track (track, underwater), Mauritius proper is going to be in some real strife with sea-level rise / storm-surge.

Let alone the fate of small islands.

        Signed,

In Non-Devil's-Advocate Guise (just this once),

        Tas.

        • So true but the view from that bathtub in the master bedroom though…

          Edit: Also no snakes

  • Are you a multi-millionare? Buy a piece of land, get a dozer, and build a moat.

Anyway it sounds kinda pointless, you've got all the disadvantages of living in an isolated area, plus every time you want to go to the mainland you have to take a boat. Don't forget jetty fees.

    I own an island!

We have a fairly tiny dam, so I had an island put in it. The little boys play at fishing from the bridge, and wood ducks take their babies there thinking that they're safe from cats etc (if they looked, they'd see the bridge. lol)

I used to work for a guy who had a private island. It was sizeable enough to have an airstrip and he had his own plane.
He got rid of it after a while, not sure if he made money overall. He lived an worked in Sydney, so didn't get there as often as he hoped, and I think he found the hassle of being somewhere remote a nuisance.

Freehold or leasehold? Can you build/improve things? Is there potential to make an income? Water supply? Proximity to mainlaind/ease of transportation/are there other islands serviced by a ferry or etc. nearby?

  • My soon-to-be BIL is hoping to buy an island in the Indian Ocean and then turn it into a resort, a bit like they've done with the Îlot des Deux Cocos. SIL works in event management and he has experience working in resort management and hospitality. From what he says, it sounds like there's good money in that kind of venture.

    • of course there is. u generally need to already have good money to even invest in such venture though.

    • How did it go? :)

His wife fell pregnant… twice! The project had to be shelved..for now anyway :)

        • Oh, wow! That would certainly have thrown a wrench in the works. I hope he eventually finds a way to achieve that dream :)

@Zazer: I hope too. But based on my own personal experience, kids are freaking expensive! Might not be any money left to buy a private island after the 2nd one is born:(

@[Deactivated]: Yeah, that's true. Ah well, maybe he'll win the lottery, you never know :)

  • It's not Dangar Island is it?

Keep in mind you have to park your car on the mainland and take a boat across, every single time.

    • wouldn't u have to do that with most islands?
unless u build a bridge or have a drive on ferry service…

but generally those islands are a bit more expensive

      • Bribie Island has a bridge.

Just trying to say it's a huge inconvenience, logistically anyway.
