Nexus 6 Warranty Issue - Faulty Battery

Looking for some advice on what to do about my Nexus 6.

I bought it December last year from JBHiFi and am now having issues with the battery. The phone goes flat anywhere from 5-20% so I'm looking for a repair/replacement under warranty.

Here's the catch, Motorola have advised that since my screen is damaged (tinniest crack ever in top corner of glass) they deem my warranty to be void and not only would I have to pay for the new battery but I'd have to also pay for the screen to be replaced too!

Is this unreasonable for a battery that can be accessed via the back panel?

Note: JBHiFi are only willing to send it off to Motorola for me.

Edit: Take a look at this graph WOW

  • Might be easier just to buy a replacement battery.

    • unfortunately I may have to, but is that really likely to be of any better quality?

      • It depends on which one you buy…

Any phone battery should not turn off @ 20% if I understand your post correctly.

        • yeah you have read it correctly.

I'd just be worried about the battery capacity

You also need specialized tools to open the cell phone. eBay and JayCar has a selection of phone opening toolkits.

If not done correctly you'll damage the phone further or render it a brick.

Unless you happen to be a smartphone engineer, proving that the two issues (chipped display, bad battery) are unrelated is going to be pretty tough… There is also the possibility the battery was damaged by impact but then again there is also the possibility that it was faulty to begin with, or was damaged via other means (e.g using a lousy China-Charger)

I would first hard reset the phone and diagnose the situation by using the phone in a bare-bones configuration (no background apps) and see if the battery still conks out at a certain percentage. If the battery percentage history is not consistent (i.e. appears to increase or decrease rapidly for no apparent reason) then you should suspect a bad battery.

    • yeah thanks, have been looking at iFixit guides and the battery isn't too hard to access, just might be glued in place…

feeling really good about having dropped my phone now! slipped out of my bag, darn thing!

  • Did you check what's using up so much battery? It might just be an app.

    • not an issue with discharge rate but shutting off unexpectedly at 20%.

nevertheless I have tried a fresh reset with no apps installed, problem persists.

thanks, giving it a go right now

    • so ahhhhh this happened

      • So the battery died at about 3.30 and when you restarted it had 30%.

        • I charged it inbetween. Tends to come on with the same charge as it shuts off at.

I was more commenting here on the weird side ways spike on the left

        • @Woodyg22:
Not sure what the spike is about , there is a gap between when it was switched on to when the charger was connected.

        • @nocure:
Oh no, that part makes sense.
So it shut off at 15%, I charged it until 30% when I turned it on and unplugged it as I went out quickly. Then came back after it had gone down a bit and I charged it back up.

The spike I was referring to is high up on the left side where it juts out. Somehow suggesting multiple charge points at the same points in time..

Do an experiment…get it to full charge and leave it on overnight and see what chart you get in the morning.

Got down to 1%!!!! That's amazing, first time in ages. The battery graph did jump down a chunk when I did a restart just before so it looks to be recalibrated or something.

I'll do a full charge now and try my luck tomorrow, but for now, thanks a lot!

      • okay 11% cutoff today, damn.

  • So, are Motorola claiming that the crack in the screen is the cause of the battery malfunction?

Demanding that the screen is replaced (at OP's cost) in order to replace a battery, which one would consider is a separate issue and not relatable to the battery does seem a bit unreasonable.

If you can prove that the malfunction with the battery is not related to the screen damage I'd suggest that you'd have a case to have the battery replaced for free.

    • that would be the trick.
and it would depend if the screen needs to be removed to fix the battery, if it does , then there is no way they would put a faulty /broken screen back on.

      • fortunately the battery is accessed via the back so the screen doesn't have to be touched, but valid point.

  • calibrate the battery first, or just remember 20% is 0%, physical damage do void warranty as the impact might effect other parts inside the device.

id go to consumer affairs and raise this issue with them as they might have more push to get this thing sorted. clear cut case of bullying you out of a obvious repair of a fault that has nothing to do what so ever with this damage

    • thanks, I'll call Moto back first tomorrow and give them a final go

  • hang on if it is a nexus have you called google and have a chat to them about the fault, they should be also the ones that need to look at it as its a google nexus made by moto.

    • Despite having bought from JBHiFi?

I suppose it is worth a shot!

      • it is a nexus, call them and they should go through their system to see if its aus stock and if so then make a claim….. im not sure what sort of implications you would have with purchasing it from jb BUT dont tell them UNTIL you have no choice…. also if that fails go through JB as you purchased through them if google fails.
