Commbank Tap and Pay on Samsung Galaxy s5

My s5 has this really nice feature where it allows me to pay with my s5's NFC (same as tap and pay) to a linked commbank account.
Only problem is that i don't think many stores dont know about this feature and i often get weird looks from cashiers like what the heck is this guy trying to do. The funniest one was when cashier at a new agency told me "This aint America … no apple pay". There was also another time when another cashier thought i was doing something dodgy and refused to allow me to pay with my phone.

its great when you use self check out but i hope Commbank did a bit more to let merchants know about the feature.

anyone else have any similar experiences ?

It is just a matter of time until paying via phone becomes widespread enough. Apple Pay (should it become available in Australia) will make that much faster.

  • Tap and pay has only been available since earlier this year despite NFC being on Android for at least FIVE years before this.

Given their obvious enthusiasm I doubt they even care who uses the service!

  • The few places I've actually used it they seemed like they were used to it. Although it is weird when I say I'll pay by card and just have my phone out.

The annoying places to use it is where the terminals have a keypad guard that makes it harder to get your phone in a good position.

  • Are the Tap n Pay terminals proprietary or are they cross-compatible with different banks? I know supermarkets have contactless payments but the devices don't seem to be Commbank branded.

AFAIK Paywave payment methods are also an additional initial plus ongoing cost for merchants (at least 60 dollars a month) so don't expect your average mum/dad shops to implement contactless payment methods.
