Scam on eBay - $2,000 x15 Sold - $30,000 + Other Stuff

I bought Microsoft Surface Pro 3 on eBay (Paid via PayPal). So I am guessing my money is safe but review will be done on 5th Sept 2015.

eBay seller had good reviews with 99.5%+ feedback when I paid for it, but today it is 93.6%.

I have received his information via ASICS and other websites

http://stores.ebay.com.au/SHOPPOLICIOUS

Business name: Freaks Marketing

Status: Registered

<MOD: Remove personal information>

This person has scammed $30,000 in tablet plus whatever other stuff he sold.

I have filled a complaint on ACCC but I don't expect they will do anything.

This is frustrating.

What can be done. I am sure I will get my money back but I don't want this person to get away without any consequence.

You didn't pay by PayPal I guess?

(sorry, just re-read the post and realise you said that lol.. d'oh)

    • Thanks. I will report on this gov website as well.

Sorry to hear but buying a $2000 item from a seller that's only been around for 5 months is a tad risky. On the upside, you paid with PayPal so you're covered.

    • I have actually checked and he had 100% rating at that time.

      • Thats because of the short duration

$30,000+ - Scamming so many people. Unethical.

        • +7

          I don't know.

What would you do if you get scammed. Will you be happy if you just going to get money back. What if someone breaks in, and if he get caught, he apologies, would you let him go?

        • I know, burglary and eBay scamming is not same but person is not returning money by his will. he will be forced by PayPal/Cops or PayPal has to pay. What do you think?

  • Does anyone know what will happen to this person. Obviously He must has withdrawn money from PayPal and from his bank account. By the time PayPal can do anything, He might be gone.

I am guessing PayPal will be paying money for all these money.

    • Paypal can contact the banks. If it is a criminal case, police can get involved. The problem is that many of these scammers are based overseas, so ACL can't protect you.

      • ACL has nothing to do with fraud. Regardless, to get any enforceable order under ACL you have to take the retailer to a tribunal, at your cost. Outcome is not guaranteed either…
In short… we have no consumer laws.

Are you sure it's the person you've named above, and not someone who may have gained access to his eBay/PayPal account?

    • I am guessing PayPal will be paying money for all these money.

That's not the way it works sorry. Paypal will attempt to recover your funds from the seller, but if they are unable to do so they do not fund it themselves.

As suggested by someone a couple of posts down, his account has most likely been hacked, and it's someone else using his account who has scammed you.

      • Yes they do.

    • Someone sold me a gift card on ebay that they never had. In fact they sold several people the same card over several days. This was back when buyers could both see each other's username, and communicate with each other. Several of us realised early on it was a scam, emailed each other, and reported it to Paypal and police. A month or two later Paypal repaid us most of what was taken. Some months later again, the girl claimed in court her sister had stolen her Paypal login/password. (Yeah right.) Anyway, the court dictated she repay Paypal - and the difference that was not repaid to us by them before her next court appearance - or - she'd be heading for gaol. (She told me this herself via email.) I actually wound up a few $ ahead somehow.

Oh - and VIC police (I'm in NSW) contacted me to check she had actually repaid the difference before her next court appearance.

That was for a few $100 gift cards - and it was when internet shopping was still quite immature in Australia. (So it's unlikely someone that stole $30,000 will off unscathed.)

Paypal can deal with it, you getting your money back is your only concern right now.

paypal can hold funds or freeze accounts they think are fraudulent. That's why the ozbargain great 9289 went out of business. They sold like a million dollars worth of TVs overnight and paypal froze their account indefinitely. Even after everyone received their TVs, the kept the freeze forcing them out of business.

They sold like a million dollars worth of TVs overnight and paypal froze their account indefinitely.

Is there a thread about that on ozbargain or elsewhere?

      • I cant see much about it any more, pretty sure they had it on their website when they closed down. There are a few comments posted here and there

  • I'm pretty sure paypal had a $1500 protection limit when I signed up many moons ago.

This guy sounds like he ran a pretty good scam. Get his trustworthy rating up with paypal, then when he's able to release funds immeadiatley, pull a $30000 scam.

    • I thought the funds for any sale were held by paypal until the buyer receives the item?

      • +1

No. I have eBay store and as soon as somebody pays for purchased product, I can request withdrawal, which takes usually 1-2 days to receive money in my bank account.

      • +1

PayPal holds onto the funds for a while if you're a new or irregular seller.

  • Given they were selling hundreds (thousands) of Aussie Post Pre-paid bags at less than face value - I would make the assumption they are now actually in JAIL and hence can't send any more items or possibly access their email.

Either way bad outcome for legitimate buyers.

I've always wondered how ebay sellers can sell vast quantities of Aussie Post gear at way under any advertised bulk discount rate offered by Aust Post AND pay 12% eBay and paypal fees and still be in business.

If the seller pulled the money from his paypal account into his bank account and then withdraw that then paypal can bring his account into negative, but still wont be able to get the funds back without going route via police etc

  • Mehhh I wasted my $50 ebay coupon, and bought Auspost satchel on it. I paid the rest via paypal !

  • Just a reminder that personal information (name, address, phone number) should not be posted.

If you read some of the positive comments, it is funny how people are saying "fraud fraud fraud" and yet still click on Positive rating. Butter fingers…

  • Yup purchased some satchels and am about to put in a claim … sigh

  • Ebay Australia is based in Switzerland and claims not to operate in Australia (tax cheats or creative accounting depending on your audience) so I wonder if anything could really be done by Australian Police?

FYI: about the phone number listed at the top.

I rang the number this morning. and just now, the guy replied: " hi mate, the number 0280074444 listed on ebay is the wrong number, i havent sold anything on ebay. i have informed ebay and they are looking into it. hope you get it sorted. sorry"

    • Thanks. I tried calling as well and nobody answered and when I searched online. I got another landline number.
