DIY Coopers Kit at ALDI $59.99 - Not a Bargain!

Moved to Forum: Original Link

WARNING!!!
Not much info from the catalogue, but I assume it is similar to this one and they are clearing out old packaging. This kit is worse value for money than the Brigalow one, as well as the standard Coopers available at Big W. It only makes @14-15 bottles, & taps are known to leak.
Furthermore, there is no cleaner, sanitiser or bottle brush.
I expect heaps of negative reviews for this post.
Check with a local store as they may have a better product for slightly more.
On a plus, it may taste better than the Aldi Rivet beer.
Also, any unsold stock might be okay value at $20. ;-)

    Lol wat?

    • I want to attract people to the pitfalls of buying cheap beer brewing kits. This is what gives homebrew beer a bad name.

  • +2

So you posted a bargain which isn't a bargain?

    • +1

      Yes I have.

I kinda like this service announcement. I'm sure if someone came in here posting the same deal but with all good comments it would get 20 or so upvotes only because it's cheap. Being cheap doesn't make something a bargain.

Maybe you could start a new site, OzNobargain.

        • +1

Thats a great idea. I think they call it productreview.com.au

Is home brewing really worth it?

    • +1

Only if you do it properly. Steer clear of Supermarket products, which put me off home brew initially.

  • +5

I agree with the OP, no bargain.

  • +1

Wait, do I upvote this because it's a bargain? Or because you want it to be seen? If I neg it, won't that make your PSA pointless?

    so confused….

    • +2

Actually, I was wondering the same. Should people plus or minus. :-)

  • +1

fair points. But I'm confused, if I agree, do I upvote or downvote on this one ?

    • So am I. I just want to raise attention. BTW I am enjoying my homemade butterscotch schnapps.

  • I've never negged a single post before, so i don't know what it feels like. But if you insist…

Hay Guise, should I post this as bargain? http://www.amazon.com/AudioQuest-Diamond-feet-Braided-Cable/…

    sorryu, 1st post, be nice?

    • Nice, but the Really Expensive Rock is much more of a bargain. For loosely defined terms of "bargain", anyway.

  • I should put this in the forums, but not many people look at the forums. Every one looks for specials it seems, not warnings. :-)

Definitely don't buy it if it only comes with a 15 litre fermenter. Buy a bigger one from a homebrew shop (60 litres or larger).

    • Or at least 30 litres. It's sometimes cheaper to buy 2 x 30 litre drums, then 1 x 60L. Furthermore, there is less chance of a defective yeast, when using 2 separate drums, especially if the beer tin kit came from Big W, woolworths etc

  • I Picked up a "fermenter", i.e. 25 litre water cube thing + tap, from Rays in their recent clearance for $14.

    • Is it Food grade plastic HDPE?
There maybe a stamp on the bottom.
25 litre is too small to do a decent batch of beer/spirits. It can foam out the airlock.
      Great for water though.

      • +1

        yeah, Food grade plastic HDPE.
I use pre-mix cans for home brewing. 21 litres usually. so 25 ltrs is fine. doesn't foam.

        • Just make sure you buy them from a homebrew store.
I worked in warehousing for a major retailer, where they store these products on a high shelf in their distribution centres prior to shipping, they can be subject to heat over summer, which affects the yeast. This even explains why soft drink may taste off like Pepsi. It tastes better in a bottle from KFC, or a servo than from one that came from a supermaket.

  • ozbargainer for 2 years. You should know better than to post this as a deal

  • +1

It mightn't be a bargain for $60 at Aldi, but it certainly was for $10 at the local Target store. :) (Didn't post because there were not enough there at the time to warrant it)

  • I've gone off this home brew business, ever since the banning of the confederate flag.
No point to it, if I can't drive around in the General Lee and play Dixie.

Switch to brewing potcheen instead of white lightning. The Pogues make a much better soundtrack for some real drinking.

We've got your transport sorted, too.
