Quick RAM question

So I have this board (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/B85M%20Pro4/?cat=Specificatio…) which says:

Supports DDR3/DD3L 1600/1333/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered memory

What happens if I put anything in faster than 1600? Will it just mean the full speed won't be taken advantage of?

1600 is the max speed the MB will run the ram at.

just like a ferrari can only travel 40km/h max in a school zone at drop off/pick up time.

Cheers :) Managed to search the right thing just about when you posted that!

Just got 2x 4Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 2133MHz for $48.95, thought that was a good upgrade to my 8GB I have now :)

      • What ram did you have and which one did you just buy?

        • Have - Crucial 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 (CT102464BA160)
          Bought - 2x 4Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 2133MHz

    AFAIK:
It'll run at whatever you have configured your memory speed to be - according to your BIOS settings (mobo bus speed times multiplier).
If you have the bios setting as 1600 Mhz it will cap at 1600 Mhz even if you put in faster spec RAM.

  • Depending on what your using your PC for, I think you probably would get more use out of more ram than faster eg. 16gb lower speed ram.

If you were only using 1 ram slot before you might notice get a little improvement moving to the new ram, but really best PC improvement you will get is like 2-3 percent and thats being optimistic. Getting a second 8gb piece to match the original would have been a better option.

    • It was $48.95 for 8gb, don't think I'd find cheaper than that regardless ;)

    • And this is to double up the current amount, not swapping 8gb for 8gb… Maybe you got confused?

      • maybe you did, quoting you above "Have - Crucial 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 (CT102464BA160) Bought - 2x 4Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 2133MHz"

        • It was in response to:
