Seller posting generic photos to sell on Gumtree?

just wondering why people use Generic photos , that is photos taken from company websites, not taking their own pictures to sell goods/items on Gumtree. What do you think of this, should I be a bit wary of the seller?

Probably laziness. I didn't even put a photo when I sold my PS4 and some games.

  • Laziness but if i were to see an ad with a fake photo or none at all, i just instantly skip it.

I guess thats laziness from my side

    Buyer beware.

If a seller is too lazy to not have a generic photo, then the seller is too lazy to package the item properly and what you bought will break on the way.

well gumtrees meant to be face to face so packaging is kinda a non issue no ?
so is a generic picture , as you are meant to actually see the product as its face to face.

Depends entirely on the item being sold

+1 glassware looks crap without studio photos.

I use generic pics to weed out the tyre kickers from the genuine buyers on gumtree. I person who is genuinely interested in an item wouldn't care less whether there is a "real" picture or not. Usually my items are used, but in very good or excellent condition anyway. They will come and want to inspect the item themselves. No postage needed.

I always assume it's in bad condition if they use generic image.

      • This prettty much applies for me too. If I am interested in some product, I am likely to know what it looks like. What I really want to know is what condition the product you're selling is in. I assume that generic photo ones are a gamble, a gamble that I am not willing to take (others might, not me).

    • Well, if a generic pic is going to put you off, then my thinking you're not that keen on buying the item anyway. Hence the generic pic serves it's purpose to weed out the tire kickers. This only works if the item is fairly uncommon and occasionally listed on gumtree and not common items where there are hundreds to choose from.

  • Some times I use generic pics, mainly because I just can't seem to get a good quality photo of my item with my camera or I don't have a good background to make the item look flattering.

Sometimes I use generic photos because I was in a hurry when posting the ads. But in the description I put "contact me if you need more information or pictures of the item". And I only sell face-to-face on gumtree, so the buyer can inspect the item before they buy.

  • I have not bought from gumtree before, but I have sold, and in that case I didn't even have pictures. I guess I would be more inclined to line up a meeting and inspection on Gumtree, hence pictures become unimportant to me.

  • I do that on EBay n Gumtree sometimes if my item is exactly as the stock product. This is why EBay allows certain items to call up the existing catalogue photo which you are allowed to use. It's up to the seller to describe any difference or flaws honestly. And offer to put up more photos should buyer wish. If in doubt, ask the seller to post actual photos. (Warning about China 'designer fashion clothing' that imitate the ones celebrities wear. Often they put up the stock photo of the celebrity outfit and you think you're getting a well made exact copy textile and pattern wise. But you get somewhat different fabric and the way it's all joined is all wrong.)They are not supposed to put up stock photo in this case, but EBay lets them get away with it. BTW I rarely sell face to face on Gumtree, often the buyers pay for me to post so honest description is important.
