Best Way to Rent a Car for 9 People +Baggage Holiday in Jan from Driving Sydney to Melbourne 30 Jan to 15 Feb 2016?

Dear Ozbargain,

I need your help with an unusual request for the most cost-effective way to rent a car. Basically, my relatives are coming from overseas and arriving in Sydney on the 30th Jan 2016, wishing to rent a car for the 9 people + luggage to go on a road trip from Sydney and Melbourne (with all the holidays destinations in the middle), and leaving in Melbourne.

Is there a good site I can check for what I presume would be a van? I think the other issue is it can't have a km limit as they may be using it for more than 200kms during each day just driving around. It needs to be basically picked up from Sydney Airport and dropped off at Melbourne airport.

Thanks in advance!

Angela

Have you considered say 2x Commodore/Falcon/Camry? 5 in 1, 4 in the other. Might work out cheaper having 2 cars, than 1 bus!

    • Agree with 2 cars. But I don't think the luggage will fit in 2 Commodores. Perhaps a Tarago plus a Commodore/Falcon/Camry.

  • Have a look here http://www.imoova.com/imoova/relocations closer to the date and they might be able to get a relocation deal. They will probably need to rent two vehicles though as 9 seats plus luggage would be hard to find.

  • Yeah, there is only one licence driver unfortuatnely, the'd rather like the peace of mind than a imoova hire.

  • yeah thanks for the suggestions. I had a look the one way surcharge is a killer! Plus I think they are overseas so they only have an overseas drivers licence Im not sure it the vans need a special drivers licence.

    • In Australia a car licence is fine for a bus that seats up to 12 people. Over that you need a higher license.

      From NSW RMS website

Vehicles up to 4.5 tonne Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM). Vehicles that seat up to 12 adults, including the driver.

You can rent a 12 Seater Hiace bus from many rental companies

Frankly the relocation costs of a oneway rental will be a killer. Why cant you drive it back from Melb. You save the fares as well for at least yourself, The Hume Highway is pretty good.

Thrifty quotes 16 days $95.66 per day. 200 Km per day free, additional Km at $0.33 / Km for pick up and return to Sydney while it will add $1200 more for one way to Melbourne
