Coles & 28 Degrees CC's Merchandise Protection - have you ever claimed?

Some credit cards, including Coles and 28 Degrees, have Merchandise protection. If signed up for the product, Coles CC in particular allows you to claim the difference in price-drop of a product you had purchased nationally up to two years prior from the same store. Also you can claim for damaged items up to 180 days post purchase. It has been a while since this was brought up on OzB. Let's see if it is still popular with the community.

1) Have you ever claimed? If so, how did the process go?

2) Have your purchasing habits changed since having such a product on your card? Has it allowed you to buy products on a whim or without hunting down the best price?

My responses are "no" to Q1. So I would be interested to see how others have gone.

However I would say my purchasing habits have changed slightly for some items, especially when buying from overseas. An example is the recent deal on the Samsung SSD from Amazon. Although it is one of my favourite places to shop and the SSD was a great price, I gambled that the price would go down to somewhere near this price within two years locally. In which time I would submit the claim to Coles CC. The advantages are that I get the product from a local store then and there and possibly for a great price (down the track).

I purchased a Galaxy tab recently with this in mind also. As I needed it quickly, I didn't have time to search for the best price nationally. I picked it up from OfficeWorks (although I did pricematch it down considerably). I'm hoping it will drop down within two years even further.

The gamble is IF the product does reduce considerably in price AND (by luck?) it reduces in price from that exact store. What is also likely to happen is it simply stays at the same price and becomes unavailable or not restocked (as I have seen many products do).

Appreciate your thoughts and experiences. Cheers

The Price Protection feature is worthwhile to me but it **HAS NOT** changed my purchasing habits

I don't believe the Price Protection feature is worthwhile

  • I also would like to know if 28 Degrees will honor the price protection when paid via PayPal. Anyone?

  • IIRC price protection only applies to local stores.

I forgot to use it on the ebay sale ssd :/

    • Will price protection apply for Kogan?

      • Look at the comment above the one I posted to you earlier. It appears so.

Absolutely! It's a very easy claims procedure. Takes at most 5 minutes per claim. Only had two difficult ones, one where a receipt needed to be submitted and a "stolen card" claim that resulted in a $200 gratis payment. Either way, definitely a very worthwhile feature to have.

Haven't really changed my shopping habits, still try to find the best price but has changed the way that I use my cards. Any electronics or items that I know are likely to go on sale go on the Coles card.

Rest assured, something like a Galaxy Tab will at some stage go on sale, most likely when the new one is released.

  • 1) Yes, I claim every time I see things I bought go on sale. Easy process, money back within few days. Only had to submit a receipt once for a TV that was reduced for more than $200.

    2) Shopping habits haven't changed. I still try to buy things that are on sale, so when it goes on sale again, then the savings are bigger!! Also, bear in mind that you can only claim a maximum of $2000 a year.

p.s. I'm a shopaholic so I go to the shops every day after work =)

p.p.s. I've tried to convince my friends to get on this price protection, but they all think it's too much work to monitor price changes and making claims. Oh well.

    • but they all think it's too much work to monitor price changes

Heh, same here. Yet some of these people will have no qualms about lining up at fuel bowsers for 10 minutes to save $2.

      Thanks for the comment.

    • Really curious about this. What do you need to provide if the reduced price is more than $200? like what do they ask for? Receipt of purchase? Proof that item is currently on special? Pictures?
I have the card and thinking of buying a TV and you know TV can drop down in price more than $200 if on special. Thanks for the reply :)

        I provided the following:
        - Copy of my receipt (proof of purchase)
        - Screenshot of the JB Hi-Fi page where it shows the reduced price, and the date of reduction as demonstrated by the calendar on my MAC at the bottom (proof of price reduction)
        - URL of the page, in case they didn't believe the screenshot
        - Screenshot of the TV model number (zoomed in, to let them know it's the exact model)
        - Screenshot of their catalogue from JB Hi-Fi, showing the sale period.

Got the refund within 5 days after submitting all of those.

        Very easy process.

p.s. I also claim for my clothes, because they are ALWAYS on sale =)

        • So you provided those even before they requested anything yes?

What about in-store special. Like for example big w has the Big Drop. Its no where to be found on the website or catalogue. The only proof you have is the picture you take at the store. Do you think they would approve? Shoes are the most common ones, no website, no catalogue, in store sale..LOL

        • @piggiepanda: this should shed some light http://assets.gecapital.com.au/forms/insurance/price-protect…

If the claim is under $200 the process looks quite simple. If over and the price is not advertised in a catalogue then you need part of the form completed by the store rep.

          @piggiepanda:

I provided the above after being requested to do so.

They do not require proof if the price difference is less than $200. If the specials such as the Big Drop has reductions of more than $200, then by all means go ahead and take a photo.

But like I said in my first post, I only had to submit a receipt once, all other items were approved without sending in supporting evidence as they were under $200 and were the common items that would go on sale =)

        • @mishmish:

Awesome, thanks for clarifying that. I've only had the card for 3 months and I've never made a claim so i dont really know the proper procedures :). Friends think its a waste cause of the 0.5% fee, so they only use it if they're buying stuff from overseas.

By the way, when you mentioned "that you can only claim a maximum of $2000 a year." Is that from 1 jan - 31st dec? or from when we first joined?

        • @piggiepanda:

The $2000 per year pretty much means "in the past 12 months from today".

So if you're lodging today, and you've already claimed $1990 in the last twelve months, then you gotta wait til later.

You can always claim later than when you see the price reduction (for example, see reduction on 15/09/2015, but claim on 22/11/2015 is still ok).

The 0.5% fee is only a waste if you don't pay off your card by end of statement period. I always pay mine off.

I have claimed nearly $500 in the past year and a half from the Coles CC.For things like phones, DSLR cameras and computer gear etc
For Coles you can use the online form to make the claim and it takes about 5 minutes (https://eform.gemoney.com.au/eform/Page.do?eFormName=Insuran…).
And to keep track of the purchases I use (https://www.followthatpage.com/) it will monitor the website and send an email when the page (price changes) you would have to tweek it to get it right, but after that can leave it to do it's job.

    • I've been wanting a tracker like this. Thanks

  • So if buying through Kogan's store on Ebay, 28 degrees will also honour the price protection?

  • I don't have Price Protection because I'm scared of paying the 0.5% premium. I would consider it if I was more educated on it, and overall the topic of credit cards because I'm relatively new to the credit card department.

You don't pay anything if you pay off your credit card before the statement date. If you are good with time management, you are getting merchandise protection for free.
