  • do you know if you can watch mkv files with this one?

    • +1

      no, you can't.

  • +2

It's not powerful enough to play h.264 video files.
    http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/products/PVRR2230.aspx

    Btw, here's the manual.
    http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/download/default.aspx?act=RD&pSeri…

    edit:
I bought one of these in the previous sale and after updating the firmware to the latest one and buying a short RG6 antenna cable from the wall outlet to the back of the pvr2230, this thing works great. I get sharp hdtv playback/recording and a nice media player in a very small package.

    • I got one recently as well,
      havent upgrade the firmware yet.

Do you know which firmware you need to upgrade to ?

      choice of 1.8.2 or 1.5.4 or 1.3.8

      • I grabbed the latest one, v1.8.2.

        It's easy to do.
Unzip the FW to a USB stick, connect it up to the pvr2230, start up the pvr2230, select Movie in the menu, highlight the FW file and press the OK button.
Then it updates in 2 -3 minutes.

  • thanks for that. Do you know of any other media player which will play the mkv files.
Also, is there one which does all i.e. plays mkv and a tv tuner as well?

  • dp

    • I am looking at getting the astone and would love to know where you have found it for $200. The best i have found is http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2… which has it for $245.

      Thanks.

      • Sorry, my mistake. They haven't come down in price much.

      • I'm guessing 1saleaday.com.au I'm pretty sure I've seen it on sale their for that price.

  • Can anyone tell me what kind of Wireless LAN card can be used on this model? COTD didn't even list the model number but it looks like a 2230.

And have anyone tried recording via EPG? Any comment?

    • Well this is what the OO website says about it:

By installing 2.5" HDD hard drive or connecting to any USB storage device, the R2230 gives you ability record with various features like direct recording, scheduled recording through EPG (Electronic Program Guide).
      ….
Scheduled recording with EPG and recording weekly programs

      • Thanks, I read the manual and it gets the free to air EPG.

I was looking for a contact number on their site to verify the model number but can't even get a number. You are right they didn't even specify the remote. They just can't think people will assume there is a remote. When buying things online, I really have to read the details as it is to much of a hassle to return it. Some people will put a different picture on a different model.

        • It comes with a remote - there is no other way you can program it or use many of its features without this. So even though not mentioned its there - its on page 10 of the manual listed above by bender

          TVIX Unit
          REmote
          USB-Y cable
          RCA cable
          Optical Jack
          USb Host cable
          Manual CD
          Stereo cable
          Power adapter
          Quick Guide
          A/V IN cable

Automatically formats the HD when you install it

  • Nice product. It's $120 at the moment at OO… and that's supposedly 60% off.

    http://www.oo.com.au/DViCO_TViX-2230_Ultimate_HD_Co_P27061C1…

Odd though that COTD didn't specify if it has a remote, I guess it might be a given.

  • From the specs it appears to be R-2230.
Does anyone know if it works with other USB wireless adapters ? I got an old 802.11g.
Does it allow playback of other recorded shows or movie files while a recording is in progress ? (Not time shifting).

    • Well it was mentioned in the previous thread that you can get the Realtek equivalent for $39:
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/19989#comment-131514

    • +2

There are only 3 models that look like this the 2200 2210 and 2230

      the 2200 is analog only
      the 2210 is NTSC
      the 2230 is PAL

So it can only be the 20/30 and its hardly likely its the 20 as thats NTSC so you cant record Pal broadcasts in oz with that and since they say you can record HDTV and its being sold in Australia they would have hard time convincing anyone it was fit for advertised purpose. And frankly why would they try.

As for which USB network dongle this is the details from their site.

      They say

      i. D-Link DWL-G122 (HW ver. C1) : Not supported.

ii. Linksys WUSB54GC : Not supported.

(and yep I can confirm 1. as thats the old card I had lying around and it does NOT work.

      http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/boards/MyAQ.aspx?bserial=15&act=RD…

Other than that I find it a great little recorder. Hopefully better when I get around to getting the USB wireless setup. The price is right and the interface is a lot better than others like beyonwiz, and its a lot easier to move around from TV to TV and to PC or MAC.

As for different video formats a simple conversion program does the trick when I get something thats in the wrong format. But then again I only use this casually not a big time TV recorder - whats good to record

also look here there are many FAQ's on their website that may answer many questions here

      http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/faq/default.aspx?bserial=0&act=LT&…

  • will it work without a set top box?

    • It doubles as a HD set top box, and it was also mentioned in the previous thread that it can be used without installing an internal hard drive.

      • I found it wouldnt record to an external hard disk only records on an internal one.

But it will play files from an external disk.

        • Bargrin is correct - as usual!!

          • @[Deactivated]: does it record to a usb dongle?

            • @andy19363: NOP you have to have the internal drive - as mentioned below MSY have 320G for $65(WD) which I use and it works fine. From there I can archive off to external drive if things get full,or usb dongle to give to a friend etc

        • Yes. By 'it' I was referring to the HD Set Top Box function which works without any internal or external hard drive, I guess I should have made that clear.

  • Does anybody know if it is possible to schedule recordings using S-Video in?
From reading the manual, it doesn't seem possible.

    • +1

Yes it is look in manual above page 33 and I tried it on mine (at least to set up mode) and I could manually schedule to record from source - choosing Digital TV, Video or Svideo. Guess you must make sure your foxtel or other unit is on at the time the recording starts. And it is a manual process rather than via epg

  • I guess we're all gonna be looking for 2.5 500g internal drives pretty soon………anyone know of any current deals going? (or any retailers want to jump in?)

    • andy - you can also look at 320gb drives I bought from MSY for $65 so depends on how much you want to record and how much to pay

      • yep…..have seen them thanks……just wondered if there were any 500g that were not too much more…..

    • I got one of those Medion 2.5" 500GB for $99 from aldi.

    • MSY is a good idea but I'm thinking about going to Umart who have a 2.5" 320GB WD for $64.50. Are there some more attractive alternatives? Is there a good place to find used ones?

      • After I got mine I tried looking at ebay but they were bidding $45 or more on 180gB drives - then there was postage. There were no real bargains that I could see. But as always things may change.

  • It says the WirelessUSB is optional, anyone know where to get one cheap (and is compatible?)

    • On whirlpool they say you can get one for $39 here

      http://tvix.com.au/

      • can anyone point me in the directon on how to stream stuff from a pc to wirelessUSB using XP ?

        • This question was asked on another site and the response was that streaming of HD video via wireless is not recommended with any device, audio and low bit rate video maybe ok.

          http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=71041&st=40

I'd imagine you would set it up via the included/downloadable software that's mentioned in the manual and on their site.

  • Am I to assume that with this unit that I am unable to watch a movie file or a previously recorded show when a scheduled TV recording is in progress ?

  • I have a sony bravia Full HD TV and Sony HDMI compatible dvd player? with this connect directly to my tv through hdmi and record both standard and HIGH definition tv?

    • Once you install the 2.5" hard drive and connect this to the antenna and your TV via HDMI, it will be able to record both High Definition and Standard Definition digital tv, and you should be able to select programs to record from the EPG.

      • Do u have to connect an antenna to the recorder as well as hdmi to the tv or hdmi to the tv is sufficient to record hd tv?

        • You definately need to connect this device to an antenna - it can't 'receive' the DVB-T broadcast without it. Unless your Bravia has an antenna cable 'Loop-Out' you'll probably need some kind of splitter like this: http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/en/product/L427…

…either that or you could just have no antenna cable going into the Bravia which would mean you have to watch all TV via this device, or just get an indoor antenna if you know what I mean.

  • Great Price.

Does any one know what format it records in from the composite/svideo in port.
I think it would be a .mpg file but cant seem to confirm.

EDIT Just found on dvico website it is .mpg

Digital Tv says file type TP

  • Can anyone confirm
1.If this can be used ( after installation of a suitable hard drive and upgrade to latest firmware ),as a portable hard drive on a computer running Windows 7 operating system to view TV shows previously captured ?
    2. How much GB space per hour would be used to capture in high quality, which would help greatly in weighing up what size hard drive to throw in !

    • From their website FAQ

      Digital TV : TP
Analog TV or external input : MPG.

      HQ : 69.2M/min 720480, 9364Kbps
      SP : 42.2M/min 720
      480, 5801Kbps
      EP : 28.3M/min 352*480, 3985Kbps

    • +1

For your first question, this is from the features page on their website:

if you connect it to the USB on your PC, it functions as an external HDD, which means that you can copy/transfer the recorded files to your computer. Transferred files can be edited, stored, or re-encoded in your PC.

…it's also mentioned in the features above.

  • It is not clear to me the way it records. I read the manual and I don't understand why you have to use AV/IN in order to record TV. It means that we have to use the AV IN cables to record? Or just record from the Antenna In to the hard drive? Can somebody explain to me before make a decision?

    • I assume it's talking about recording from something like a vcr via AV in….(transfer those old tapes)….
recording digital tv is from the internal tuner

      edit - yes it is…..
      http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/faq/default.aspx?bserial=0&act=RD&…

The TViX provides a composite or S-VHS A/V input.
The TViX series also functions as a personal video recorder or archiving machine, allowing you to capture analog video and store it in a digital format. It can capture or time-shift the external analog video as well as analog TV signal, and then record it in superb high-quality digital format.
Connect the output of the external device to the dongle cables included. Then connect this dongle cable to the TViX A/V IN port. Do not connect this cable forcefully or you can damage the TViX unit.

      • thank you Andy. I have a Bravia Full HD with integrated tuner. Will I be able to watch TV with the integrated tuner while I record another channel with TVIX? I supposed that the answer is yea but I just want to be sure.

        • I personally can't see why not….

        • Yeah it shouldn't be a problem as long as both the Bravia and the TVIX are connected to an antenna.

    • @dasalcedo

You're talking about two separate features:

      • Viewing, recording and scheduled recording of digital terrestrial HD/SD broadcasts (i.e. recording live TV).
      • composite and S-Video video input recording support – which allows you to record from a whole range of devices such as a Foxtel box, PS3/XBOX/WII, VCR or camcorder, or another set top box if you really wanted to.

These features are part of the reason why it's such a "mighty little device".

      • Thanks inheritance, now it is very clear to me, I have bought this product as I don't have money to buy the expensive topfield/beyonwiz brands. Buying the TV left me broken :)

  • edit: delete

  • Would get it if it allowed simultaneous playback and TV record. But still +1 for the good deal.

    • Hmm I see you've raised this query three times. Maybe you can post your question on the DTV forum? http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=71041&st=80

As it can do time-shift you would hope it can record TV in the background while playing back something in storage, but I'll try it out when mine arrives.

      • thanks inherentchoice, somehow I doubt it would be able to cope, my current PVR is a P4 3.2HT and it still struggles if I try to watch a movie while recording is in progress. Let us know if this unit can cope when your units arrives.

  • this is a bit confusing. so it does not have a ethernet connection? cause on cotd's info it says network through wired or wireless, as it does in the manual. however, then in the specs page it is not listed. can anyone confirm whether or not it has one? thank-you

  • does anyone know if I can connect this to LCD computer monitor? I have Dell S2409W

    • I think you can use one of these $10USD cables connect the media player via HDMI and then into your dell via VGA.

      http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.26501

      • my monitor has hdmi input

        • then there your anwser, go straight hdmi…

          • @bargrin: would refresh rate be a problem, because I read that most monitor only support between 60hz-75hz whereas PAL is 50hz

            • @kbflame: PAL is an analogue television encoding system, so with digital HDMI it's irrelevant. I've got an old 50hz/60hz 24" Dell hooked up via a DVI>HDMI adapter and it works great with a Blu-Ray player and a set top box.

        • Does your monitor have speakers too? It'll be muted if not, so you'll need to hook up some kind of speakers or headphones. Fortunately this TViX seems to have a normal 3.5mm jack if this picture is to be believed.

PS if someone wants to use this with a monitor that doesn't have HDMI I would suggest a HDMI>DVI cable.

          • @inherentchoice: no it doesn't have speakers but I have external speakers connected to it

  • There goes my Clive Peeters paypal cashback from the ipod. I knew I would find something to spend it on.

  • Honestly, I'm new to all this. All I want to do is use this to pick up digital TV channels on our second TV, and also to play AVI files that I have downloaded on my PC. So I want to transfer the AVI files from my PC to this DViCO TViX-2230 HD PVR. I don't mind connecting it to my PC or transferring files over wireless network.

In plain english can someone please confirm if this DViCO TViX-2230 HD PVR can do what I want to do with it. Thanks alot for your help, much appreciated.

    • The short answer is yes to both. It works as a HD Set Top Box as well as a media player that can play AVI files. It would cost you an extra $39 for the wireless network dongle though, so it's probablay best to connect it directly to the PC via USB.

  • MSY has a 500GB WD 2.5" drive only (not external) for $100 if anyone is interested. None available at Slacks Creek QLD store though.

    • Thank you and yes, I was looking forward to buy one of those hard drives for the tvix.

  • I got mine. Build quality is very good. No printed manual. You can up grade the firware. Now where to get cheap qulity 2.5" HDD, any help? thanks.Thank you all and special thanks to bender.

  • issue with upgrading frimware.

was in process of ugrading it to the latest FW but it stopped and froze at 90%, so I hit reset, now player only goes to startup screen and hangs……what do i do ?

  • thanks the safe mode thing worked…eventually

  • Does anyone have the problem that when the 2230 is turned off or sleeps, it can't start scheduled recording? Mine can only start recording if I leave it on, but once recording is finished, it turns itself off and therefore can't record anything else until I turn it on again… According to the manual, it implies that this should not happen.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    • Haven't tried multiple recording, but I set it….switch off….it switches on and records then switches off itself, no problems with single records only

      • Looks like it's only mine then. :| Thanks for the reply.
