Buying a Chromebook?

Hi guys.

Am I going completely bonkers or do JBHIFI and Harvey Norman no longer sell Chromebooks anymore? If not, why not!?

I want to buy one and remember both retailers had heaps on offer a few months ago, but both now have no such items available on their web pages.

Anyone know the best place to grab some local Chromebook stock?

Thanks!

Bricks and mortar stores don't seem to sell them anymore.

Kogan seem to have plenty though.

For other places, check out Static Ice.

    • Still can't believe they are being phased out from the major retailers. Thanks for the links.

I've seen Chromebooks on display at JBHiFi. I don't think the web catalogue covers every model they sell.

    • A couple Lenovo, HP and Toshiba models available. Most are reduced to clear, but some are current models.

    Eh, Dickies still sell Chromebooks.

    Reduced to clear @ 249.

Cos Chrome books are crap, nobody in Australia were buying them.

    • So you don't recommend I buy one lol? But seriously, are they?

It all depends on what you want to do with it. I use a Samsung one nearly all the time at home to surf and watch streamed content. Some people use a tablet for this but I like being able to easily type when I write. And the weight distribution is right for me. I suppose you already know the pros and cons, of using cloud services vs local storage.

For someone who just need browser or want to install linux based OS(only on x86,x64 compatible processors), This is pretty good. But in most cases paying little bit extra gets you full windows. Battery on chromebooks is very good and price is attractive. And that is pretty much all pros for chromebook.

Acer is going to release "One cloudbook 11-inch" soon. 32gb version is 189 USD on acer US site. Should be around 260 AUD. I think that would be a better option. I know people say chromebook can get basic stuff done but sometimes even average user needs to use windows executable files.

They are not in big retail stores because there is nothing new coming from chromebook manufacturers. Reason for that is bad sales. Laptops like EEEbook and Hp stream are still selling better despite the bad battery life.

        • Ok cool, thanks guys. I just want to be able to sit the Chromebook down in my bedroom as a device to help stream Plex videos to my Chromecast, rather than need to use my phone each time, and some days take it on the train to get some work done. Seems like I might just wait and see how the Chromebook market does before diving in.

I too also use my Chromebook all the time (my quick review on Acer C720 from last year). I think the problem here is that none of the retailer stores stock the latest versions when they sell very well in the US. For example you can't buy the Rockchip-powered Asus C201 here (11.6", 13 hours battery & under 1kg) when they sell for ~USD$149-$169 on Amazon, or 10" Asus Chromebook Flip C100, etc. Or Acer Chromebook C740 or C910. Or Toshiba Chromebook 2. Or the upcoming Dell Chromebook…

Basically don't bother with local retailers if you are buying a Chromebook.

It's fine for kids and students, especially if their school uses Google Apps: cheap, good battery life, very low maintenance, and no games. I haven't bought a Chromebook myself but just looking at what I do on my rMBP 13", it's about 90% Chrome…

There's a Toshiba (refurb) Chromebook on Graysonline's ebay store for $212 delivered

  • As Scotty said go OS. I bought a Toshiba CB2 FHD and shipping from USA was US$19. There was a slight issue with the first one so Amazon credited my account for the cost of return shipping. Awesome service.

BTW, after working in IT for 25 years my experience is that Chrome OS is brilliant. I use it for about 95% of my computing needs. For me the selling point is instant on, no hassle internet.

  • I use the Toshiba Chromebook for work (website maintenance, documents etc). It gets about 90% of what I want to do done, and has a 11hr battery life which is amazing if you are travelling or working from a cafe.

I also use it for streaming content etc.

The downside is that it crashes when trying to view photos etc. You can't use it for games and it's pretty much useless if you aren't connected to the internet.

    • crashes when trying to view photos etc

Really? Sounds like there might be something wrong with it because I do photo editing no trouble at all.

You can't use it for games and it's pretty much useless if you aren't connected to the internet.

I don't play games but there are heaps of simple offline games.

And I use it frequently in offline mode for creating and editing documents.
