Student visa to permanent visa

Hi
I'm new to Australia living here about 1 year and Griffith student.
I chose Australia because of the loophole with the student visas and high chance of getting a PR visa at the end of my studies (according to my previous friends).
I'm currently 27 and my degree is 3 yrs course and will complete within next 2 years when am 29ish years old.
Recently I've heard about age rule and being 30+ years old will lower my chance of getting PR, I would like to confirm this and other students please share your stories.

Thanks

What loophole?! Australia takes skilled migrants related to the occupations that are in demand and not being able to be filled by locals. There is no loophole, you get preference (points) if you have 2 years of Australian study, which will help you to blend into the society, not to mention raising your skill level on par with locals/occupation requirements.

    • There's plenty of loopholes. You can do it the standard way or you can pay maybe around 40K ;)

What loophole? It is a backdoor opened by a hole government (behind its people) to make money by selling degrees, to boost population without offer Medicare/social benefits, to get more GST, and to boost rental/property market.

Know a cleaner who works in food court has completed two master degree in university here.
Drive in any petrol stations and ask the cashiers - almost 8/10 are doing a master degree.

  • I think the OP didn't mean a loophole when he said a loophole.

One needs to get certain number of points to be eligible for PR visa. There are different number of points to different age brackets. The number of points decrease as you get older.

You would loose some points if you are over 30 when you apply for the visa. You can find exact info on this from the Australian Immigration website. There is a points calculator as well.

  • "Recently I've heard about age rule and being 30+ years old will lower my chance of getting PR,"
recently? really? wow… that rule has been around since at least 10 years ago (over 30 years old you get less points).

The maximum points you can get is age 25-32. Over this you get a few less points and it goes down from there.
Make sure you get a good migration agent if you are not sure on the best path for you - it is a long long road and an agent can make all the difference.

And pay thousands for the privilege?.. that's not the Ozbargain way. Do as I did and read every last bit of the governments immigration website, learn for yourself, know every route to the outcome you desire and you'll find it easy enough to apply on your own, and avoid having to ask very vague, open questions like this.

If you seriously want to live in Australia and work hard for your right to be here then you'd know the answer to this already. Don't expect these opportunities and answers to be handed to you on a plate.

Same here, didn't pay a cent to immigration agent, did everything by myself after my wife finished Uni.

        • Really depends on your visa and personal circumstances / time available to you.
It's a bit like a tax agent - if you have a simple employee income tax and a couple of deductions, definitely do it yourself.

If you are not sure where to go, what might be the best option for you, have limited time etc then i strongly recommend an agent to assist.
Pretty much turned it all around in my situation!

        • @bertiness: If you are not sure and if you are not good with paperwork, it's better to pay for those assitance. My idiotic brother did few stupid things and my family have lost $1000s of dollars on application because of that (yes, he was an idiot and no, I was not in the country to help him and he didn't ask anything so I thought it went fine until we were hit with rejected application and more fees).

  • What one of my flatmate (who was doing masters in Law, though since he's not from here, I'm not sure how much of his words hold) told me was get a job to have a tax record as that adds onto points for PR. I think the best you can do is count your losses and try to counter balance it by having more points.

    Good luck.

  • The easiest way to get PR is to get a sponsored by a company and it's a common agreement that the company will set you up but you have to pay them back all the associated fees. Just search forums in chinese, korean and you will find plenty.

    • Easier still, get married with a local and apply for Partner Visa.

      • Thats one way,but not for everyone.

Helps if you are a Asian young female, have seen plenty of such couples here.

        • @bargainaus: may help to post on Find me a bargain - add bonus referral link wiki to find local singles - 4 options male, female, gay and trans.

  • Skilled migration points. Bear in mind your profession needs to be in the skills need list
