Replacement light for Toyota Camry

I am driving a 2010 Camry. The lights on it are simply no good. I am now looking to replace them. Was thinking to get a Bi-Xenon kit from eBay but i have read somewhere that they aren't even allowed in Australia. Does anyone know details about that?

What would be the strongest light i am allowed to replace the original lights with.

Any input is appreciated

Xenons are illegal unless they are factory fitted (or you go through the expensive aftermarket route of fitting in self-levelling headlights with an auto-washing system).

Osram Nightbreakers are probably your best bet for legal headlights.

I reckon you can definitely trust this poster's advice on this issue OP, because their name actually includes the word 'beam'.

Anything that is not original equipment (or equivalent) from the manufacturer will not be legal without standards approval. Just because you can buy them doesn't mean they are legal.

Try and find some better globes to replace the ones you have. May also be worth looking at the lens and reflector. Is the lens yellowing? Or the reflector not shiny? If th car is parked in the sun full time the headlight plastic might be breaking down and need replacing.

I suggest that that is possibly overstating things a touch. But I'd call on Lysmo for his professional opinion on this…

      • Maybe, but other than replacing the globes, or fitting lights from a higher spec model (if there are any) youll have a hard time meeting the ADRs. There are plenty of conversion kits available, but they are probably not ADR approved and therefore illegal.

  • Noob here. Very interested to know why you find the lights to be "no good".. could you give more explanation/reasons please?

I had a 2001 Camry and drove it countless times at night on interstate highways. Never felt that the lights (stock) were inadequate - certainly not for regular suburban travel either.

But again, I am a noob so perhaps I don't realise how good lights could or should be. Hence curiosity to hear your reasons..

I've noticed a lot more cars in the recent past which incredibly bright headlights (not sure if stock or not - can't recall car makes either) to the point where I wonder if they've got their high beams on. It's not pleasant being in another vehicle with those lights in your eyes.

    • My sight is just not as good as it was and I need something a bit brighter if possible.

Better to get your eyes fixed then. Brighter makes it harder for other motorists, that is why they are as bright as they are. If it is for hi beam work you could get some driving lights fitted for pretty cheap. For low beam it's a lot harder to do it within the rules.

  • i'm going with there's something wrong with your eyes

full disclosure, i am short sighted

my car uses std. H4 bulbs… I bought the cheapest H4 bulbs from supercheat. their house brand.

I drive quite regularly in the middle of night to regional areas for work.

I find them absolutely fine… I can see obstructions and rocks on the road etc.

My car has never had its lights adjusted. The car has more than adequate throw and reach.
