[POLL] How Many Coffee Capsules Do You Use to Make a Cup of Coffee (e.g. Cappuccino, Latte)?

There was a bit of conversation in this very good deal (Lavazza A Modo Mio Minu Coffee Machine - Free (up to $25.50 Profit) after $50 Cashback @ Target) about the cost of a cup of coffee.

It came down to this, do you use 1 capsule for a coffee (e.g. cappuccino, latte) or 2 (or more?). Nespresso states to just use 1 capsule on the espresso/small button (e.g. not the long shot). Other similar machines from Aldi, Caffitaly have similar instructions.

Utopian made the point that a cappuccino at a cafe, you will have 1 shot of coffee whereas the amount of coffee produced in a capsule machine only produces half a barista shot. Thus needing 2 capsules per coffee. Probably easier if I quote:

One pod holds ~5grams of coffee. Some brands 4.8 others 5.2
Water to coffee ratio should be 18:1
So 2 pods (or two tablespoons of ground) needs 180ml water, absorbs a bit, yield less than that.

Do you personally use 1 capsule or 2 for a cup of cappuccino/latte?

Use one capsule and and top with frothed milk. Most economical way in my books.

      Everything weak is economical ;)

Do you thin the oil in your engine?

What about a combination of strong and weak currency?
I mix the AUD cash in my wallet with Vietnamese dong and Chinese yuan, I find it makes your cash last a lot longer too.

  • Half a cup f/crm milk, a minute in the microwave, then 2x 12-second shots of Lavazza Deciso (two capsules)..after second shot, expel capsule, close bar and let fill with hot water. This gets such a wonderful rich coffee which really competes with the cafe. I don't know how many people are aware that the optimal taste from a capsule is achieved with short shots (unless specifically marked lungo). Too long after the colour lightens and you get a bitter and watery brew. Also apart from shorter shots (and maybe two of them) the other thing to realise if trying to get cafe feel and taste is fresh milk (not uht) and plenty of it, as that is what you'll get in a cappa, flat white, latte etc from a cafe. The "heating milk in micro first" method saves all the mucking around of steamers/frothers and you still end up with a bit of froth once finished.

  • One capsule for me, though depending on the brand and rating itself… I remember the weakest LaVazza and Grinder capsules required two capsules to even have a slight hint of coffee when I bought them to try. Biggest waste of money IMO…

Then there is the special intense roast from GJ and the Moccona red and green boxes… One capsule and the coffee taste is so strong, gotta love them =)

P.S. in terms of milk I use soy milk and the ALDI frother so just slight over the "max" mark for the coiled add-on is the amount of milk I use.

Great place to discuss it. Deals, the convo's always get buried/missed/lost. I own Aldi, MAP, Nespresso (DeLonghi Lattissima A.I.O), and a Breville Milk Cafe BMF600. Tried others aswell, friend's houses etc. Not enough to give a fair review. Even same cafe, beans, machine, milk, water… different outcome, down to method/barista. I have barista friends, and they're nuts about it. But it's like wine. To mention capsules/pods, they lose their mind.

One thing remains… The grams don't lie.
Capsules only hold ~5 grams (read the box, ppl), of full strength coffee. Less than half of what's needed for even a "standard" coffee. I like LARGE. 2 capsules, on short setting, plus milk in a 500ml travel/mug… weaker than standard, but it's reasonable & allows me to have several mugs a day.

    "Nespresso(www.nespresso.com) states"

Incorrect link? No mention of how many etc.
They'll never mention quantity, though. Suggest you need to double/triple the cost.
They always show an espresso with crema on top.

    What kills me, is this:
"Place a cup under the outlet and press the button corresponding to the desired cup size."
What?? Cardinal rule #1. Just look at the colour coming-out!
Lungo capsules are made/suggested for pushing extra water through. But that's it.
Aldi capsule boxes show 3 (?) different possible sizes the capsule is suited for, but only one size is ever ticked.

SO many links around the internet:

Damn, the Ozbargain in me convinced me to only use the long shot (get more coffee out of pod mentality). Better start using short/small shot option.

    • +1

yeah, was told for nespresso, unless you get the lungo ones (which have more coffee in it) if you select the long shot, it will burn the coffee inside

      well that's what they say!

    long blacks for me
so I use one shot from nesspresso capsule and another shot of water

    one for a short,

just tastes like water to me if i go a long

That pod coffee is crap. im not even a big coffee drinker. they sell old, stale crappy coffee for premium prices. trust me, buy an aeropress. they are brilliant.

One pod in the Aldi machine. I use the pod twice for the one cup, too.

Is that shameful to admit? /tightarse

  • Long black. I use the long pour and then remove the capsule and add another long pour of hot water.

  • No option for half a capsule?

    • I drop mine in hot water, like a teabag. They last forever!

  • one for a short,

    5 times a day.

  • Just my 2 cents and I have only tried a few different machines, at friends places. I need 2 caps. But then again i often get an extra shot at a cafe.
Don't think anyone who really appreciates good coffee would use one of these. Do not think they would burn coffee on a long pour tho, they should only be heating to between, 85-90 degrees. plenty of barista's burn their milk, so many are useless.

Just ordered one of these cold brew systems, hope they work as well as it sounds. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bod-the-ultimate-cold-bre…

P.S. The previous link was not a referral link, stoopid system

off topic but I have gone right off capsules since I read the details of what they are doing to landfill
    http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/inventor-of-coffee-pod…

Have gone back to ground coffee espresso machine
It's a little more work but I can extract the coffee how I want and no landfill
Plus wider selection of beans of course
