Home and contents insurance NSW * Please help me find best value

Its getting really difficult sifting through all these online quotes,
with different terms & conditions with each insurer.

Tips who is viewed as a trusted insurer & value paramount.

( Am over 55 )…but if you believe APIA would be the right choice, think again :o(

Thanks

  • Try Suncorp - I was pleasantly surprised with the quote they gave me (worked out cheapest of all the major and discount insurers I quoted online).

If you've got pets, they've got optional cover (which doesn't cost much more) and covers them for accidents / injuries in and around the house with an excess of $100 - well worth it!

    or
    http://www.australianunity.com.au/au/gins/homeandcontents/
are both good to deal with and I have had no hassles with them when it comes to claims.

  • Am somewhat exhausted spending hours getting online quotes,
the terms & conditions of some of these insurers are puzzling.

Whoever makes the best value list at http://www.canstar.com.au/home-and-contents-insurance/
doesnt guarantee a fair deal either.

This industrie should be under investigation. :o(

Thanks for all tips so far

  • Coles has entered the insurance market with promises of good value and savings up to 25%:
    http://www.coles-insurance.com.au/Home-Insurance.aspx

    • Coles Insurance is currently available in Tasmania only.

  • I took a lead from canstar and found Catholic Insurances based in Melbourne had very competitive rates. AAMI Suncorp and the bigger guys are advertisng every day and guess who is paying for the cute smiles….. My savings were 30% over my previous insurers renewal. and I THINK? I have better terms for me (NSW home and Contents)

as for making sense of it all - in some ways thats impossible - there are different needs hence different policies one size doesn't fit all

  • thanks for all who commented,

have to say: I had to go with the typical renewal with Suncorp after all,
even though 250.00 a year dearer then last year,
as all others seemed to ask for much more
( or not enough price difference to switch for possible hassle )

Have to say : Can`t wait for Richard Brenson finaly entering thie Australian market with competitive,
transparent, fair pricing house & contents insurance.

Again , thanks for all that replied,
I hope it helped other readers to decide.

BTW.. The Catholics never called back with their quote

    • $250/yr for home & contents…seriously that cheap?
Mine was only home content with Comminsure is around $360/yr, excess $300, home $200K

      • You didn't read it properly. It was $250 MORE EXPENSIVE than last year.

  • Believe it or not, GIO are pretty good.

I used to be with the NRMA, but shopped around and with GIO. I have more things better than NRMA which included:
    * Higher sum of contents insured
    * Accidental breakage
    * Cover for items when I'm away from home in Aus and NZ

And, believe it or not, it still was cheaper than the NRMA! GIO can even cover your pet cat/dog up to $500 worth of medical expenses.

P.S - Don't touch AAMI with a 10-foot barge pole as they were wanting a couple of hundred more tha GIO/NRMA with less options! No wonder why they don't have a quoting system for home/contents insurance online!

  • A note to POWERevolution !!!!

250.00 dearer means 250.00 more expensive then the previous year !!!!!

All together close to 1400.00 house & contents combined

GIO ( Which is together with Suncorp)
    only quoted me 40.00 less

( depending on the day of online quote - once the data is all stored )

I left GIO years ago when it came to a simple storm damage claim they disputed and sent me an assessor that was obviously bias.

They did not deserve my business again.

What good is a house contents insurance, that does dispute to avoid to pay legit claims.?

Happy New Year to all readers !

    Cheers harrribo

    • Well sorry to tell you this but the head office boffins at GIO/Suncorp are probably laughing as these companies are related. So out of fire into frying pan. A little Googling (GIO and SUNCORP) will tell you this.

On a new policy you have 14 days to change your mind not sure on renewals

As for Branson's mob they currently resell A&G insurances (owned in South Africa) who also sell via Australia Post. On car insurance the "same" policy was cheaper via Australia Post (but marginally). As for giiving the others a shake up, I always recall his promo for the virgin Credit card - not like a Bank he said, but they knocked me back at the same time Citibank and Amex gave me a card. (I applied for Virgin first)

When I rang them to enquire why the Supervisor gave me NO reason other than I did not meet their requirements - Not like a bank only worse. And look at his history - it grows then he sells out - Virgin mobile now part of Optus and the credit card is now with Westpac - yep the guys who increased their home loan rates the most.

Guess someone has to pay for Virgin Galactic

  • ozpete…if you read my post you might detect that I did mention :

GIO ( Which is together with Suncorp)

so no news here…( re: your first comment )

enough from me on this topic now !

wishing a good start into the new year to everyone !

  • This topic is indeed a confusing one to navigate!

I have just started looking at home and contents NSW too. Currently with Westpac (very expensive), don't go with them!

  • SUNCORP Consumer beware !!!

Instead of recognising customer loyalty ( after 7 years with them) they increased our premium by almost 30 % as well as applied an additional $ 300.00 ( now 400.00 per claim) unreasonably but would not budge after I complained to the resolution department.

I took my business to NRMA last week - having a local office nearby - no need to talk to bad mannered call centre people with no customer service skills in Queensland who gave out different information each time - and would not recognise a wrongly dated manually data input in their system as a staff fault from their side , but instead counted it as a separate claim ( within the last 5 years - and as such one gets penalised by higher premiums- higher access )

    Consumer be aware !!!

    • They have to get the $$ back for the payout after the QLD floods a year ago. You do realise that insurance is like a "pooled fund" where the policies of the masses are used to pay out on the losses of the fewer?
