Can't you just print more 3D filament if you run out?

    • I'm ordering some to build myself a 3D printer… Cheaper than buying one…

Hey, if you've got any old milk bottles at home just melt them down to get you started while you wait! ;-)

      • How are you learning to make one yourself? Share the knowledge please :)

Old milk bottles? Should I start saving mine now? Haha

        • Milk bottles are PET, lego is ABS, there's a bunch of stuff you can convert into filament with a grinder and filament extruder :-)

    • technically you can make your own filament at a very low cost, with a Filament Extruder..

      • There's also an Australian guy that sells kits and pre-assembled filament extruders over at http://my3dmedia.com.au

  • im waiting for the 4D printer to come out

    • It can already do 4D, but only prints in time when you're not watching; just like the proverbial pot.. :-)

What would you print yourself if you did have a 3D printer?

      • id like a Stereolithography printer because it makes the plastic nicer actually.
id print everything, id maybe print myself in chunks, an arm here, a leg there etc etc

They're pretty amazing! I use both a Form1+ and Flashforge Explorer personally, each has its pros and cons.

The biggest downsides to any resin based printer (for now) are the cost of the resin itself and the cleanup process, but the the resolution can't be matched by any FDM type.

If you're interested in checking it out; there's a huge community of 3D printed prop makers that churn out things like Iron Man suits, Groot heads, phasers and more on Facebook, some of the finished pieces are incredible.

Here's an Ant Man helmet, just because he's the only super hero who doesn't think big of himself.

      • As to "What would you print yourself…", a lot of useless trinkets at first, just for the novelty, and then nothing, as in nothing at all, once the novelty has worn off. It would, of course, still be handy to have if you needed a spacer of a certain size that you can't find at a local hardware store.

        • I've been printing things for just over a year now and the novelty still hasn't worn off I guess :-)

But you're right, the first 50~ pieces were everything from toothbrush holders, bottle openers and other little knick-knacks for around the house. Then I started making my own items to print using tinkercad.com which is easy as. Currently I'm working on a few props as well as jobs for other people, but my printer gets about 20-30 hours of printing time each week easily.

        • @fabricat3d: The only things I've printed and are actually in use are a couple of lids for our NUCs, and a few spacers. Every other trinket eventually ended up in the bin. Haven't used my printer in months and don't see this changing any time soon. Guess it's different from person to person.

      • Cheers Andrew, do you have a shop with stock to view etc? Keen to look at one in the flesh.

        Thanks

        • I'm just online at the moment so don't have a physical storefront per se, just a servicing center; however I'm happy to arrange a time for you to come visit and I can show you the printers, as well as jobs I'm working on printing and give you the tour. If you buy a printer I would normally offer to give you a free setup and

Feel free to send me a message via the contact page with email/phone and I can give you a call and sort out a time.

  • What's the postage cost to metro areas?

    • Hey Gadget,

One of the shipping options available is 'Officeworks Mailman' shipping which allows up to 4 rolls for $15 flat, anywhere in Australia.
Otherwise dynamic pricing is calculated through Australia Post.

Let me know if you get stuck on anything.

      • Andrew
  • Thanks, just ordered Black, Blue & Transparent ABS. Gave the Officeworks Mailman a go too.

    • All boxed up and will be dropped off first thing in the morning; I've only added Mailman recently and it uses Fastway couriers so I'm keen to see how fast they gets out to your neck of the woods :-)
