Living Room Gaming PC

Hi guys.

I am in the process of buying the following parts for my new living room rig. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/rp2DHx

Just wanted to get your opinion on the 2 most expensive parts. The CPU and GFX card.

As I see deals I jump on them. So far I Have the RAM and SSD. I am holding out for a deal on the GTX 970, I hope comes around soon.

Will be gaming on a 1080p tv, so want to ensure I can play games maxed out with a high frame rate.

Let me know your thoughts.

Skully

unless your tv is higher then 60hz no use getting a real high end gpu as you can only do 60 frames.
    970 is plenty enough.

Depends on the resolution… but effectively, even if you only have a 1080 TV, you can dynamic super resolution it will look better than just AA'ing… think it might be better too as you might not need AA to offset the blockiness.

    • Damn that's actually affordable. On the other hand it looks like a tacky cheap clone of the clone bravia tvs right down to the stand.

ha!, Yeah. Took long enough to convince the Misses I/we need a living room multi media ("gaming") pc. Doubt a new Tv is under discussion ;)

  • If you are not going to go SLi or XFire, I think an i5 clocked at any speed will be enough. From what I know (please correct me if I am wrong), you only need a high speed CPU if you have more than one GPU.

    • Yeah no sli, as I want a small form factor case for behind the tv.

  • 970 is i think could possibly even be overkill for 1080P.

I use a 660Ti at home and it pretty much runs everything well. 980Ti would be so great though.

Unfortunately sounds like you missed out on the 20% off ebay. 4690 was so cheap it was unbelievable.

PCCG has a good deal on a xeon package. Its good for if youve decided you want to go with a gpu.

    • Thanks @nairdajun . The 660ti is what I currently have and yeah I am happy with most of my games. The 970 gets great reviews, perhaps even the 960, but if one is spending $350 already for 960, $120 more is not much more of a stretch. I have never considered a xeon cpu, so will look into that. Cheers

  • This is very similar to what I built a couple of months ago, though I got most of my parts with the 20% off ebay deal. The main differences are I only have 8GB of RAM, and my power supply is not modular (something I didn't realise would be important; it's been 10 years since my last PC build!) Mine's also connected to my TV. Plex and Steam Big Picture are great.

For games out now, the 970 is a bit overkill. I've run everything on ultra and it's been totally buttery smooth, including the HD texture pack in Shadow of Mordor. Going into the next few years, more games are starting to have bigger textures like that, so 4GB of VRAM is going to be more necessary to keep running everything on ultra. The 970 supposedly starts to take a performance hit after using 3.5GB of VRAM, but I haven't seen that yet.

Just an idea I don't know if you've already thought of this and discounted it for some reason but, you should check out steam OS on a cheap unit i.e. $200 and just play games from your main PC. It works REALLY well, I was very suprised when I used a $400 laptop to play games off my ~$1200 gaming PC. You don't even notice any lag or anything like that it's flawless.
