16% Transaction Cost for Selling on eBay!

I just worked out what it is costing me to sell stuff on eBay and was a bit surprised!

Here is a typical example:

Graphics card sold for $55 plus $13 post.
Fees were:
Final Value Fee $5.45
Final Value Fee on Shipping $1.29
Paypal fee $2.07
So I payed $8.81 in fess on a $55 sale (post was at cost) which is 16%.

For a large item with $25 postage the percentage was just over 17%.

For items where you get cash on collection it comes out at 9.9% which was closer to what I was expecting!

Update - I changed the title as the point as was really trying to make was if the postage costs are a significant percentage of the final price, then the final value fee on shipping has a real influence of the percentage of cash that I get to keep.

It's a bit rude that they're charging FVF on postage. More than likely the result of people selling at a low price to avoid fees, then charging a fortune for post.

  • I guess that's what the company line would be, but I think the ethics of charging a fee on a user cost is misplaced. There would be other ways to police users charging extra for shipping rather than a blanket "tax".

  • I don't get it? It's not 16%, it's 9.9% on final value and post and 2.9% for paypal, exactly what you paid. These fee amounts aren't hidden either. Been this way for a while now.

That's not to say i don't think it's high and crazy but you just have to factor it into your selling price i guess.

    (8.81/55)x100 = ~16% , but you're not including the $13 post which you've included in the $8.81 fees.
So it should be (8.81/(55+13))x100 = ~13% , which is the same as the 9.9% (fv) + 2.9% (paypal).

You need to add an extra dollar or two to cover the fee in postage.

  • I'm starting to move away from ebay…. fees are too high and yes they have been for some time. I'm having to find ways to make sure that i get more out of the sale to offset what i'm charged from each. Fees are ok, this is just getting out of hand….

  • It's getting ridiculous.

  • I prefer to GIVE stuff away, rather than make a few bucks and making ebay richer.
Gumtree is a good alternative, but you do get stuffed around a bit.

  • Thats why its often called fee bay

Its now focussed on bulk pricing for vendors who do bulk sales, rather than one off mom and pop sellers

Gumtree is free and is more suited to the secondhand items that someone occasionally wants to get some money back on.
