Easiest Washable Hair Styling Wax?

Hi all,

Started using wax recently, as I find them easiest to work with my "thick" hair. However, I never like how they're so hard to wash off, and leave that constant sticky feeling on your hair. Just wondering is there a really good brand out there with easily washable property and "light" feeling on the hair. Cheers!

  • I find Gatsby a really good brand to work with. Nice, light and smells nice.

Depends on which variety. I find the matt gatsby (black box) and their clay series extremely hard to wash off.

By the OP, the trick to washing of wax is to use a clarifying shampoo like Pantene clarifying or Treseme deep cleanse.

      • that's the part I hate, had to use heaps of shampoo to wash my hair. Been taught not to waste my water ;)

    • which one do you use then ?

      • I personally use Vidal Sassoon Men's Style Ready shampoo which I get my mates to bring into Australia whenever they travel to Asia. But I found Tresemme Deep Cleansing shampoo to work well. I believe priceline or chemist warehouse sells it cheapest.

Just note that a clarifying shampoo strips the layer of oil (both healthy and hair products) from the hair and leaves a squeaky feeling so best to use a conditioner after to prevent the hair from being too dry.

    • I used to use the Gatsby moving rubber…. they were horrible to get out of your hair and it doesn't really work as well when comparing to some some other local brands i tried…

  • Also depends on whether you want a matte or gloss finish.
    For matte I like Muk

For a more wet look, I've recently been using Layrite Pomade

both wash out relatively easily, don't feel overly sticky/greasy post-styling and are easy to use on my extremely thick hair.

    • I'm leaning toward wet look now, those dry wax sometimes leave white streak on your streak if you're in a hurry in the morning haha

  • I like Waterwax by Redken. I find it washes out really easily.

Gone with this one after reading a few postive reviews, thanks! Hopefully I'll like it

Bloody hard to find a place to sell it cheap to AU customers though. Finally ordered through bath & unwind for AUD $26 shipped ;)

Can you buy this in local stores or would you have to order it online? Might give this and Muk a shot but would prefer a matte look and if possible locally available.

You can usually buy it from hairdressers and I think some Pricelines have it. Online is cheaper though

        • Cheers mate, will have a look for it when I go to the shops

  • Looks like most of the ones you guys listed are not readily available in retail store eh ..or even through AU site

  • If you're using an oil-based wax or pomade, it won't easily wash out regardless of brand. Use water-based products like sprays, gels or clay.

    • Any example? Gel definitely easier to apply and wash off, but hair tend to looks less "lively" with gel..just my 2 cent

      • I'm not your hair stylist. I have no idea what your hair type is, or your desired style. You ask for something that's easy to wash out and I suggest a water-based product like any of the above. The rest depends on your budget, shop, etc which only you know.

        • Fair enough, but some reason some wax formula still claim to be water based, how's that work?

        • 'Wax' is often used interchangeably with pomade. They both come in water-based form which is similar to clay, but there are oil-based waxes which are similar to paraffin and harder to get out. It's just confusing marketing.

  • muk is the most popular

  • Better value if it doesn't wash off as you'll have to use less wax next time

    • Id rather not have wax on my pillow all the time

  • Jack the Snipper original creme.

  • MUKK

    • heard of them before , but where do you order usually?

  • Hairhouse warehouse, they are a bit expensive I pay around $22.00 for 1 but sometimes they have a special going for 2 for 35 and I stock up then . Ive been using them for around 4 year .. the best hair product and Ive used quite a few brands

    • I know it's hard to recommend without knowing my hair type, but which one you reckon give good hold but not too "stiff" lol..

  • What style are you looking at achieving , or what sort of hair style you have ?

    • Fairly thick strong black hair. Basically just need to achieve that "stylish messy" look during morning routine..Wouldn't mind little wet look, as sometimes the wax is so dry it leaves white streak on the hair. I generally don't comb my hair..

  • Try RED Mukk , its matte finish and will give you a messy look , make sure to rub it in your palms before you apply it on your hair so its not too sticky when you apply . If its too sticky ( it does in winters) then use a hairdryer to soften it ..

  • I recently found a place in Castle Hill that sells Muk and Redken products, got myself an orange dry muk duo pack for around $25 i think. How do you guys use this stuff? I found the orange muk to be too sticky even after rubbing it in my palm, to the point where my palms got stuck abit and when applying it to my hair it hurts. Am i suppose to wet my palm first or something? I know some brands requires wet palms when applying but this one does not actually say anything…

    • Yea MUK is too sticky I find. Definitely not my list now.

I got an vege oil based wax from hair warehouse, have to double check the name…it like a paste and can apply to semi wet hair too

      • I've actually been using this one called dominate, you can buy in WW, doesn't smell as great as the muk stuff, but it seems really good. Not sticky, matte look and styles really well.
