New Screens for Church Service

Hi everyone.

We're looking at replacing our projector at church for 2 TVs on stands. Thinking of getting the following so that they are (1) mobile; and (2) can wirelessly hook up to our laptop at the back of the church. We mostly use PowerPoint and sometimes show photos / Youtube clips / videos.

  1. 2x TVs (thinking of 65" screens)
  2. 2x stands on castors
  3. 2x airplay streaming devices (we have a PC laptop)

Will this work? Any thoughts of particular products to get? Hoping to spend MAX $4,000

Thanks for your help

That should totally work but not sure about the budget. Kogan sell some nice 65" TVs (I have one) for $1000 each, but soon as you're off centre by about 20° it looks rubbish. May be an issue for those seated around the TV. 60"-65" TVs with good viewing angles might be expensive, around the $1500-$2000 mark and eat up your budget.

There's plenty of stands up on eBay: http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601… - should get two nice ones for under $500

Grab some Chromecasts and some tablets (there's PowerPoint on iOS/Android now too) and it should work fine - particularly for YouTube. Even if people just want to plug their laptops in, most laptops have HDMI, so just get a long sturdy cable and it should be sweet.

If the TVs are going to be far apart (more than 10M) investigate using HDbaseT - works great for extending HDMI cabling using Ethernet cable (just don't skimp on the quality of the ethernet cable - makes a huge difference).

You can use both TVs at once as well, just by using a HDMI splitter. Plug the Chromecast/AppleTV/Laptop/whatever into the splitter, then plug each TV into the splitter. That way more people can see the screens better. A good splitter shouldn't cost more than $100.

I do a lot of A/V install stuff for a living, so hit me up if you have any questions.

    • Sorry to thread-jack. Would you have any recommendations for entry-level projectors? looking at getting one to help project images for airbrushing, so it can be fairly basic.
      Thanks

      • If it's just for airbrushing (I assume to trace an image?) then you probably want something super bright so you can use it in a decently lit area - unless you don't mind working in the dark. I also don't know if you need a 1080p/720p/XGA (1024x768) projector. You can probably get away with an XGA projector, which are mainly used for presentations, not movies (movies are widescreen, the XGA ones are square 4:3 ratio) and are brighter for the same money.

The BenQ projectors are generally good bang for buck - something like the BenQ MX525 has 3200 lumens (so reasonably bright) and goes for around $600. You can hunt eBay and get some ex-classroom projectors too. There's a couple of 1500-2000 lumen projectors for around $250-$300 if you want to save some money.

        • Thanks, much appreciated.
Good point about the brightness, I underestimated my requirements.

  • idea is good but as decryption says 2x decent 65" TVs will eat your budget fast.

I'd definitely wait for a eBay 20% off deal or a Dicksmith 20% or more off deal.

  • Hey guys. Thanks heaps for your thoughts

I've just been offered Hitachi 65" VZ656100 TVs at $1850 a piece. What do you think?

Do you think they'll go okay with this stand on eBay?

I'm thinking of the following set-up. Thanks Decryption for the thoughts

2 x TVs connected with HDMI cables from either side of the stage to a HDMI splitter which is then connected to a Chromecast

We'll operate the 2 TVs wirelessly through the laptop via Wifi to the Chromecast

    What do you think?

Seems fine. I can't find any reviews online though.

That stand looks flimsy as hell to be honest.

    • Decent price for some 65" units - check them in store before you buy them though and look at them off centre and make sure stuff is still legible.

Check out these stands: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Heavy-Duty-Commercial-15-15-Tilt-… looks a bit more durable.

With the splitter & chromecast, that will work fine, but make sure you use good HDMI cables. Dunno how far apart the TVs will be, but shitty HDMI cables have caused me a world of pain in the past.

Have you thought about audio? i.e: I assume you're gonna run the sound through something that isn't just the TV speakers, haha. You might need to get a HDMI splitter that will de-embed the audio, then run the audio from the splitter into your existing audio setup (church prob has a PA system set up). For long audio runs use XLR :)
