Cancelled Flights - Is It Possible to Get a Refund for Airport Taxes?

I'm writing on behalf of my parents. They had to cancel quite a few flights from their vacation in the US, due to a family emergency. They paid for their flights with an Australian travel company. I recently read online that you can claim a refund for the airport taxes component for cancelled flights from each airport. I was wondering if anyone had success in claiming these taxes back?

  • I heard that Air Asia was taken to court over it. Anyway they now make it easy to claim back. I am currently hoping to find info on a similar type refund from MAS, but I am not optimistic.

  • +1

If it is a real family emergency - being hospitalised, funeral etc, some airline companies would refund all the fares. I had all my Jetstar fares refunded due to that reason - I had to provide some paperwork but it was worth it.

  • I claimed airport taxes from AirAsia in 2013. I had to chase it up a couple of times, it went through for 3 of 4 flights, the taxes on the fourth were only a few dollars so I stopped chasing it. They did make it difficult to claim.

I also claimed airport taxes from Emirates in 2014, and they were much better, just one form, back on my credit card within a month.

You should also check with your travel insurance as you might get a full refund from them depending on the reason you are cancelling.

    • Good to know that it is possible. There's quite a few flights and three passengers as well. Travel insurance didn't cover our situation as the death in the family was not in Australia.

    • AirAisa I have done 5 times without a problem. Must wait until after the travel date, and then complete form http://www.airasia.com/my/en/e-form.page#

  • depends which airline….which one?

    • Not too sure, but think it's Mexico International and Delta Airlines.

    • Cool, sums it up quite nicely.
