Don't buy the 200amp jumper leads if you want them for your car:

    Is this product for you?

Many people may not realise it, but the size of jumper lead to suit a 12V battery depends greatly on the size or Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) of a battery. If an attempt to jump start a car with a large battery is made using smaller Amp leads, then the required current may not be able to correct flow through these leads. In contrast, if large leads may be excessive for smaller batteries. For those with smaller batteries as commonly found in motorcycles or ride on lawn mowers the SCA 200Amp 2.7m Jumper Leads are ideal

    • So how do you know which size is adequate for what purpose?

      • small car when cranking, the current draws 150-250A, 6 cyl draws 200-350A, and the diesel car draws more current

Unless your battery has failed, then pretty much any jumper leads will do.

In most cases, people want jumper leads because their battery has gone flat, not because the battery has failed. Even the "jumper leads" which go from cigarette-lighter-socket to cigarette-lighter-socket are sufficient, and they carry less than 15 amps - because that's the rating of the fuse going to the cigarette lighter socket.

In the case where your battery has failed, e.g. a shorted cell or gone high-impedance, then you really don't want to be running the engine with it, as the battery won't be performing one of its main jobs - smoothing the power that comes from the alternator. Without the smoothing, you could easily damage the car's electronics, like the ignition computer, and then you'll be up for a LOT of money. If your battery fails, you really should get a replacement battery before driving off.

Last time I needed jumper leads was when my car developed a fault in the alternator - it drew about 50mA all the time, and after a few days of inactivity, I couldn't get the car started, the battery was too flat. That's the sort of thing these jumper leads are for, or when you accidentally left the interior lights on all weekend and flattened the battery that way. I have a friend who had to wait in the car for 90 minutes on a hot day - they put the ignition to the "on" position to run the fan, not realizing just how much power is drawn when the ignition is in that position and the engine is off. They couldn't start the engine after 90 minutes, these jumper leads would have helped there, too.

    • I think more people should realize that rejectshop sell 300A jumper leads for 6 dollars. Selected stores only.
