[VIC] NQR - L'OR Espresso Capsules (Nespresso Compatible) 30 Capsules for $6 Starts 17.08.15

80

Saw this in the Catalogue I picked up from NQR Coburg VIC today. Looks like good deals all round, but the L'OR deal (not 100% sure which varieties) is good as they usually go on sale for $4ea at WOW and I've seen them on here at Coles earlier in the year 3 for $9.

This deal works out to be 20c per capsule.

seeing this (and some other deals being replicated between the stores) makes me wonder if NQR is run by the same people as Rite Price in SA - I just stocked up on L'Or nespresso pods at Rite Price Prospect for $2 per box last weekend. They're alright but not amazing.

Either that or they're just getting the same deals on expiring and unpopular products from the mainstream supermarkets :)

    • Probably the latter.

'Roger Gillespie, the founder of bakery chain Bakers Delight, has emerged as a white knight for collapsed Victorian grocery chain NQR, which was placed in administration in late May. Gillespie has teamed up with a former owner of NQR, Ken Nienaber, to buy the chain from administrators Ferrier Hodgson.Jul 7, 2009'

  • how do these compare to other brands?

    • My wife: "They are fine. Not the same flavour or strength, but if anyone say's L'OR is shet, good luck to them, pay $6 each!" - im dictating as my wife gives her 2c. I don't drink coffee myself unless out and about. = Worth a punt I reckon, especially if nearby to an NQR.

      • your wife = true OzBargain faithful.

    • I only drink the stronger ones (strength 12 and 10) and they are they are actually quite good.

Having said that, I even find most Nespresso flavours to which these should really be compared - aside from a couple of extra strength premium ones (kazaar and dharkan), to be too watery and just OK at best.

I recently got to try the Nescafe Delonghi system (basically, Nespresso's cheaper brother) and was very pleasantly surprised.

Sure, the pods cost around the same as a premium Nespresso but you actually get 8g of coffee per shot vs the measly 5g with the Nespresso system, making Nescafe much better value!

The quality of the coffee was as good as any pod system I've ever tried and after setting the water amount to the minimum setting (one lower than recommended for the 'esspresso' pod) the espresso was as good as, if not better, than what most local cafes would charge you 3 bucks for. However, it wasn't quite as good as the espressi I pull at home using freshly roasted beans I get from the Manna Beans deals on here.

The best thing about the Nescafe Delonghi system is that you can often buy the machine get it at your local supermarket for $60 at 50% off.

      • dolce gusto?

I was given one of these (by my brother in law who did some demo work for them). Not a fan at all. I drink espresso (short black). Bought a nespresso machine and usually have their higher strength (wish the cubania wasn't gone. It was a 13 and not at all bitter, quite delicious!)

        • Yes, I think it was Dolce Gusto. Have you try their Espresso pod with the minimum water setting?

And yes, I'm definitely an espresso (or doppio to be more precise) drinker myself and have an Italian grinder and espresso machine at home. I drink my 'good' coffee on the weekend and pods before work.

I usually grind 16g - 18g of beans for my double shot, depending on the beans I use, and weigh them with a jeweller's scale before grinding. With Nespresso or L'OR Espresso I have to use 3 pods for roughly the same amount of coffee and it's still only 15 grams!

Dolce Gusto, on the other hand, gives you 16g from 2 pods as well as much better flexibility in terms of controlling the water amount than a Nespresso machine with no programmable memory. Not sure if you can buy compatible pods for this system - if so, that would make it even more attractive.

As it stands, if you can get L'OR Espresso at 20c - 40c a pod, it's still better value.

To be honest, I use the pod coffees in general as more of a caffeine delivery system a step above Maccona than as a replacement for a proper espresso made from freshly ground quality beans.

  • Will these work in the Dolce Gusto machines?

    • No, only Nespresso machines.

      • Thanks for confirming!

From the picture it looks like these are the flavoured ones, chocolate, nutty and vanilla. They are not very good in my opinion. They are no longer on the L'OR website so I think they have been discontinued. Good price if you like them, but I will pass.

    • Thanks for picking up on that - saved me a rather long trip as there are no NQR stores close to where I am.
