Moving house, new TV suggestions?

Title says it. Moving house soon, going from a furnished to unfurnished house so need a TV. Not too fussed about size, anywhere from 42-55" will do fine.

Will be used for gaming occasionally (console) so a lower response time (5ms?) is preferred. Want it to be at least 1080p, not too fussed about getting 4k or anything too fancy. Looking to spend $500-1000 depending on quality. Any suggestions?
Did a few quick searches though all deals were expired or for expensive (>$1500) TVs.

Just a few notes:
Local stores are Better electrical, radio rentals and Harvey Norman. Any others delivery fees will need to be considered as store pick-up sadly won't be an option.
I've looked into the kogan TVs though the 8-10ms response time doesn't sound too good, not sure how noticeable it'd be but I'd prefer 5/2ms. Also reviews mostly are negative on their TVs.

Comments

  • so a lower response time (5ms?)

20ms is more in the ball park of being excellent with the average being 30-40ms and crap house ones being 50-70ms.

    • What are you basing this on?? Most I've looked at say 5ms? Are you confusing input lag with resposne time?
I'm not sure 8ms will be too different to 5, though the negative reviews still make me avoid kogan TVs.

      • Good point, I did. But Input latency is a bigger issue than response time, you can deal with a bit of colour ghosting but input latency will ruin your game.

  • I was in JB today. They had one of those humongous curved screen (4K) thingies going. I was blown away by the HD demo they were running.

Find the room, max the card, mate! :-)

    • Was more looking to get one without making out any cards! :p

I just ordered a 2015 48" 100hz samsung smart tv for c&c at dick smith yesterday for $1070
The tv was on special already and then I got an extra 15% off from the sale yesterday
I had been in the market for a new tv for the past couple of months, I got a hisense 50" k390 android tv in the eBay 20% off sales but it had a bad shadowing problem and was generally clunky to use, so I returned it and decided to spend a bit more and get a better brand, I'd recommend you stick to the main brands
Dick smith still have a sale on samsung tv's til Monday, so there might be some good combo specials to come on the weekend

After reading a few reviews of the cheaper Kogan TVs I was thinking the same, cheap TVs don't overly seem worth even bothering with. Still hoping I can somehow find a decent sized branded TV for around $600-700 if possible though, maybe a bit more.

      • We bought a Kogan 55" 3D three years ago on one of their "pre-order" deals. It was our primary screen for two years, but these days it's in the music/ den room and only gets occasional use. The price we paid was very good, even by today's standards.

Nevertheless, on it's own using it's internal tuners the images are poor, suffering from washed out & natural colours.

However, I run it from a well endowed HTPC via a Yamaha media amplifier, which substantially improves image rendering. Makes me think that it's probably more the electronics that let these cheap boxes down rather than the screen itself.

    • I was in JB-Hi the other day and the salesguy tried to sell me a Hisense and I told him I wasn't interested.. He got extremely agressive in telling me how good they were. I'm with you, we like Samsung :)

Owning several Samsungs, I can assure you that they aren't exactly the pinnacle of quality. I own their last latest and greatest plasma. Great looking TV but has had the TV repairman out 3 times because they are inherently unreliable. Power supply is terrible. Prior to that I had an LED. My Sony and old Pioneer plasma are much higher quality.

        • Sorry to hear you've had a bad experience, I still like Samsung :)

        • @ttc72:

Yeah, I think they are fine, but they are hardly high end televisions. They are pretty much the Hyundai of televisions.

        • @thorton82:

          I also like my Hyundai i30, it's a great car :D

          @ttc72:

Yeah, I don't think anyone has ever associated the words 'great' and 'Hyundai' together before.

          Maybe:

          I also like my Hyundai i30, it's a car :D

          Would be more factually correct.

        • @thorton82:

Nope, I really like my i30, IT IS a great car. :D
It's a 6 speed manual diesel, I average about 5litres per 100km. Hyundai is the worlds biggest manufacturer of diesel engines and employ 15 million people throughout the world (directly and indirectly)

I do detect a bit of brand snobbery from you maybe.. :P

          @ttc72:

No a Tesla P85D Is a great car. A Mercedes SLS is a great car. Any Hyundai is transport, nothing more.

I also think it is extremely unlikely that Hyundai are the world's largest diesel manufacturer, and I can't find any information to support your claim. I would have though Mercedes would have produced many more. After all, if they can only get 5L/100km out of a tiny death trap like an i30, and Mercedes can get more out of a huge luxobarge like an E250, kind of defeats the purpose of a small car.

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_Heavy_Industries

          This should help :D

To me a mercedes (of any type) is a huge waste of money.. both vehicles get you from A to B don't they? I sit in the traffic on the way home just the same as they do. My car is comfortable, the air con works, the heating works, the cruise control works.. My i30 has a 5 star safety rating, same as the merc, and that's a standard they have to justify, they don't just get given it.
I'm guessing you really are just a brand snob :)

        • @ttc72: You think a 5 star compact is as safe as a 5 star sedan? It's not. NCAP testing is relative. Small shoeboxes are not safe cars. Also, your link means nothing, for a start it is a separate company, that has nothing to do with the automotive arm, and second, it does not support your point. Im not a brand snob at all, but its pretty clear you know as much about cars as you do televisions.

        • @thorton82:

I certainly know an asshole when I come across one :) Do you work at Jb-Hi Fi?

Where did I specify cars only? Hyundai is the worlds biggest manufacturer of diesel engines is what I said..

I used to sell cars just for the record, so I guess I might just know more than you because we were required to do our reearch, and on all makes.. not just be knobs who spout off shit on the internet to make themselves feel important :)
I'm not bothering with you anymore.

        • @ttc72: The only shit being spouted here is from you sweetheart.

  • I have a 40 inch Kogan
It has a samsung panel and is as good as my inlaws real samsung, but mine was near half the price.
5 years old and still working fine, never had a tech out
