Boat, PWC, Jetski Registration in SA Ridiculously over The Top

I recently bought a Jetski from Altona in Melbourne. It has expired Vic registration, plates, boat numbers etc.
I plan to use it in both Vic & SA. Looking at the yearly Registration in Vic $49…. SA $368! (plus another $300 in transfer / State change over fees)!!! (and you need to pay $10 to use the SA ramp every time). Sadly rego is free in NT / ACT.

To cut a long story short, it's a no brainer to try and get it registered via Vic Roads.

Issues:

I only have an SA license (I work in the mines in SA and need an SA license), but apparently they can use your original passport (I'm hoping a sited original statement from a J&P will get me over the line). Plus you, or someone you appoint has to attend a vic rds rego office in person.

You also need a Vic storage address, for which I will be using a storage unit in Port Melbourne. Postal address will be in SA (where I work). However, the ski is currently in SA, as I am planning to use it in SA in a few weeks.

Anyone done this / know another way? I'm not breaking any rules as long as you don't use the ski in SA or Vic for more than 90 days.

If not, looks like I might need to get on a tiger flight for a trip to a Melbourne Rego office, or maybe drive to the nearest Vic office (Horsham probably).

    Make that Mildura being closer

  • insurance might be an issue

  • Once you discover how much maintenance/service/repairs/parts costs are involved in in owning a jet ski, you wont worry so much about the rego costs. A race horse will probably be cheaper and faster.

  • Haha..Jason101… very true. The little things have already started sneaking up…oil, plugs, special oil extractor, spare lanyard… and rego which is 25% of the cost of the entire thing!

Insurance, good call, verified, happy as long as it is registered in Oz.

  • ..and how is it a trade plate for boats only $17.40? and it looks like a register business name will get you over the line?

  • You don't need a licence in Vic to register a boat or car. My cars and boat are in my wife's name and she's doesn't have a licence for either. You can download a transfer form off the Vic roads website fill it out pay the fees and post it in then your done.
