TPG ? Telstra ?
Im with Telstra atm. I'm paying 90bucks a month for an adsl2+ service which has a stable connection at my place. I think you can have a much cheaper plan because our's has a landline bundle.
I have similar problem, though I am only paying $60 per month.
I remember there was a site that you can check the distance between your house and the tower that sends out signal. Does anyone know that? I remember someone told me that my house was very far from where they sent out the signal, and thus the speed is slow. Would that be the same for all ISP? Would changing ISP make the connection faster?
http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/
all ISPs use the same copper network to signal to your house, so in that regard they're all the same.
Backhaul & DSLAM hardware (ie, what happens from the exchange back to the internet) can vary between providers, but note that some ISPs use other ISPs DSLAMs.
cable is a different infrastructure though.
Thanks for the info provided. I am right at the edge from where the signal was sent out…
If changing ISP wouldn't change the speed, is there any way I can make my internet faster?
what's your distance to exchange, and who are you currently with?
and according to ozspeedtest.com , what speeds do you currently get?
How do I check the distance on that website? I put in the address but it only shows the map.
I am with Internode. I don't remember the result for the speedtest, but it was very slow…
@Maki: Click the marker on the map once you enter your address.
@unco:
Thanks, this is what I got:
You are 2723 m from EDWN as the crow flies.
Estimated cable length of 3403.75 m.
Estimated speed of 4000
Zone 1
@Maki:
OK, so now do an ozspeedtest and post results
Results Test run on 07/08/2015 @ 10:28 PM
Your Line Speed 3.77 Mbps (3,772 kbps)
Your Download Speed 471 KB/s (0.47 MB/s)
Mirror: Internode
Data: 4 MB
Test Time: 10.01 secs
Upload Test Results
You uploaded 1 MB bytes in 38.93 seconds.
kbps: 215.68
KB/s: 26.96
Mbps: 0.22
I don't think this is accurate, as we went over the quota this month. I should be able to give you a better view early next week, thanks guys.
@Maki:
Those stats match what adsl2exchanges indicates, plus internode has one of the best back ends available. You cannot get better speeds unless you go cable or 4G.
Thanks for all the advice provided. Too bad that I can't get better speeds…
I agree, pretty good speed for adsl/2.
Whats your usage needs? Gigs per mth?
With dropouts like that it is not usually the isps fault.
Done any diagnostics? Post your modem status.
Been with Exetel and it's only dropped out once in two years. However I am rather close to the exchange.
I know people are against it after they jacked up prices some 45%. But I think it still represents good value. I pay $45 per month for 100GB with line rental.
Wow that's cheap for line rental and 100gb. I'm with iiNet for 100gb with a voip home number and free local/national calls for $60pm. I'd rather go with something cheaper and just have a voip number with PAYG calls, as I make very few anyway.
Consider Spintel, then look here —> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/spintel_referral_links
Anything with Internode.
:)
Cable or ADSL2+? Do you want a home phone or not? How much data do you use?
If it continually drops out, then it may be an issue with the infrastructure around your home, and changing ISP's may not change that.
