Wife's brand new cardigan ruined!

Hi Guys,

My wife buys clothing from a company called TS ( www.ts14plus.com.au )

She's probably spent well over $800 over the past 2 Years and has never had any issues with any of the clothing, until today! I put her brand new cardigan in the wash just like I normally do with other clothes, We have never used a (Laundry Bag) normally I've never had any issues!

I take the clothes out and her cardigan is got 3 holes near the top left corner.. This wasn't cheap $99.95 for the item, She's only had it for 2 weeks now, and I have previously washed it without any ripping happening..

Anyway I've contacted the store who blantantly told me straight up, (DID YOU READ THE CARE LABEL) HAH! I'm a guy do I read anything on clothes? Nope! One would assume no special requirements would be required for a single cardigan right!

After several photo's / sending emails back and forward they have suggested I bring the item into the store and have it (ASSESSED) then they will determine if the item is faulty or not..

I don't spend heaps on clothes myself but I do on electrical items, do I have any rights in terms of replacement or refund? Or can the store simply say you failed to follow the care instructions bad luck..

Honestly if the item was a few months old sure.. but 2 weeks?

  • tell the store that you followed the care instructions and the cardigan is faulty.

That's to late as I have already explained I didn't, however I did mention I used cold wash and slow spin cycle, but apparently the use of a laundry bag is a must! to protect the high quality garments they've told me..

Please keep in mind that many Taking Shape garments are made of delicate fibres and must be laundered according to the care label to ensure the remain of high quality.

      • Can you return it to another store and not the one you spoke to.

One would assume no special requirements would be required for a single cardigan right!

I would never put a cardigan that I like in the wash without a laundry bag or without special care. Because of the many many holes in cardigans, they can easily get caught in the metal bits of the washer, of from other clothes like buttons.

well I can confirm I've never used a laundry bag for over 7 years and never had an issue until today.. I'm talking about $20 cardigans from target vs this $100 from a retailer.. you would think paying more = better quality right? then again it's all china

      • +10

It doesn't work like that. Have you considered you been lucky for the last 7 years? Just because it hasn't happened before doesn't excuse you from your mistake.

"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't follow your instructions but since I haven't been following instructions for the last 7 years and nothing has gone wrong - your product must be faulty instead of it finally catching up to me,"

From what Ive seen at clothing stores, I find cheaper clothing stores including Target use rougher fabrics, whilst more expensive brands use softer fabrics, which means its more fragile. Clothing is not the same as electronics.

Paying more most of the time does equal better quality, but quality for clothing probably means softness, comfortability, fabric type and design, not whether it can withstand rough conditions. If you bought a $100 phone and a $1000k phone, would you expect the $1k phone to withstand being thrown around and kicked around the floor better, just because you paid more?

      • $20 cardigans are polyester or blends. They are not delicate and can go in the wash. Natural fibers are more delicate.

Women's clothing = often far more delicate materials than men's clothing. Extra care needs to be taken. Paying more doesn't equal anything.. actually, more expensive clothes often require even more care than cheaper clothes (which you'd do naturally anyway because you would obviously want to protect those expensive items).

edit - read above replies and realised I've just repeated everyone.

Happy wife, happy life. You made an error so replace the item for the Mrs and you will look like a hero.

    • Agreed. Order a new one, have it sent to your work and surprise her. Also admitting you screwed up will help.

    • Smart person here lol

    Whats a laundry bag?

    • +2

It's actually called a 'washing bag', a white coloured bag made of plastic meshing that you put delicate stuff in to prevent damage.

      • -2

        $6? Forget it!

        • +2

          It's an investment.

        • You can get them cheaper..

and $6 for something that lasts for years and years and years, while protecting your expensive clothes from being damaged in the wash, isn't exactly a waste of money. OP wouldn't be in this situation if they'd used a bag :P

My poll vote was made accidentally. I meant to vote 'the store owes you nothing'. It's very unfortunate the cardigan got ruined, but I've also learned the hard way that cardigans in particular can easily be ruined by not hand washing, not using a laundry bag or not putting the wash cycle on 'hand wash'. My husband takes care of most of our laundry but we now have two separate compartments - one for general wash and one for my work wear. I do my work wear laundry (which is mostly all hand wash stuff) on the weekend. It works for us.

I generally hand wash all my woollen and delicate items. I would be surprised if the cardigan can't be repaired; if it has run using a crochet hook to pick up the stitches then sew it down. I had a bunch of shirts I got cheaply that I should've taken back 'cause they ripped easily. I put one of them in a machine and it tore to pieces and the others tore even with handwashing. I didn't want to have the argument with the shop. Best of luck.

    This is the real crime

Really? it is a cardigan therefore probably wool so you should hand wash it. If you were going to use a washing machine you should put it on the delicates/wool cycle SEPARATE to other clothes.

Sorry but this is 100% your fault and absolutely nothing to do with the store.

I don't spend heaps on clothes myself but I do on electrical items, do I have any rights in terms of replacement or refund? Or can the store simply say you failed to follow the care instructions bad luck..

Unless the label said it was OK to put in a washing machine, you have no reason to take action with the store.

    P.S I'm a guy and I know this stuff.

I'm talking about $20 cardigans from target vs this $100 from a retailer.. you would think paying more = better quality right?

Yes better quality but the more expensive you go the harder it is to wash.

that what happen when you get a guy to do a women job

    • +5

i think you are confusing laundry with child birth, lots of people make mistakes with laundry, gender is irrelevant to this discusssion

    • That's why god created woman. To fix up the mistakes that men do. Your comment sums this up well. Bring it..

  • You gotta mess up a couple of times in order to be good at washing clothes. At least you didn't put the jeans with the whites and fark up everything in the wash cycle. I did, and I became the best family laundry man after.

  • +5

You're defo gonna have to 'suck this one up' Gomo; you screwed up mate. You seem to be assuming that more expensive cardigans 'should' be less prone to damage in the washing machine than cheaper ones. I'd suggest that the reverse is actually the case for certain types of clothes, especially cardigans.

  • Thanks all for the replies,

I will still take the item back to the store and get there opnion on it, obviously I have commited a crime by the Washing Association Of Australia by not using a laundry bag :(

    • +5

No, you failed to follow the recommended care procedure and you want the store to take responsibility for your mistake.

    • +1

You're not entitled to any refund or replacement, but I'm sure if you roll around the floor in perfect circles for 5mins while crying, they might sympathize and donate you a new one. Worth a shot !

      • Can i watch? Sounds fun.

    • +1

& go buy some laundry bags. ;)

Does your wife wear bras, stockings/tights, things with lace, tops with embellishments sewn on, or flowy tops made of fine material? Stuff like that should all go in laundry bags. I put bras together in one bag, then stockings/tights in another bag, etc etc. Helps prevent things from catching on one another in the wash and unnecessary stretching of any elastic (say with a bra). Bra hooks can also get caught on things too and potentially cause damage if there are clothing items with loose weaves or lace too, hence keeping those sorts of things in their own bags.

Also consider doing separate washes for regular/inexpensive/work/dirty clothes and another for delicates (in a delicates cycle), if you're not doing it already.

      • Exactly! And laundry bags aren't expensive.. You can get them in different sizes too. It's worth the few bucks investment.

    RIP

    Hey all,

Thought I would post a positive outcome on this one, Today I was contacted by the store whom are willing to provide a on the spot replacement, at first I was sure they weren't going to, but given some time with no reply to there last message they obviously want me to be happy so they have offered to replace it!

While It was my fault they obviously want to back there products and so have given me a replacement! I'll be sure to invest in that pesky laundry bag!

    • +1

Looks like your streak of luck will continue!

      • +1

I washed it today in a laundry bag :) no issues on this one!

        • That's great to hear! Where did you buy yours and for how much? I personally have never used one and based on this thread, should probably buy one.

        • +2

          @mafmouf: Kmart ! $6 :)
